The usual rebalancing of the S & P 500 index and the exchange traded funds around it is a quarterly event occurring Friday. There are exchange-traded funds that follow the broad market benchmark and ETFs that track the S & P 500 sector indexes, including technology. The S & P 500 indexes are pure indexes. Nvidia could become 99% of the S & P 500 by market capitalization, and it would be reflected in the index. This trio dominates the S & P 500 technology index.

Nvidia 's blistering rally will force a major technology exchange-traded fund to acquire more than $10 billion worth of shares of the chip giant while cutting dramatically back on Apple . The index that the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) follows will soon rebalance, based on an adjusted market cap value from Friday's close. As a result, Microsoft and Nvidia will likely have a weight of around 21%, while Apple will fall sharply to about 4.5%, Bartolini said. That is a change from the prior weightings, which saw Nvidia's weight be kept artificially low by index rules. As of June 14, Microsoft and Apple were both at about 22% each in the fund, while Nvidia was just 6%.

Investors worried about concentration risk in the market may want to consider value-oriented investments. Avantis' U.S. Large Cap Value ETF (AVLV) tracks the Russell 1000 Value index, but with a caveat — the fund managers screen stocks using a profitability overlay. After Apple and Meta , the Large Cap Value fund's next-largest holdings are JPMorgan , Costco and Exxon Mobil , according to FactSet. Avantis' Large Cap Value ETF is up 7.7% in 2024, as of Friday's market close. The Russell 1000 Value index gained 4.5% during the same period.

Like many others, fund manager Jim Golan has made a fortune from mega-cap growth stocks. For the last 19 years, Golan has logged consistently solid returns as manager of the $2.2 billion William Blair Large Cap Growth Fund (LCGNX). Large, high-quality growth stocks have been in vogue since the early 2010s, though that doesn't explain why Golan's fund has excelled versus its peers. How to invest in large growth stocks — and 4 top picksTo impress Golan, stocks must have scale or other structural advantages that lead to success over his three- to five-year investing horizon. Conflict in the Middle East escalated over the weekend as Iran launched drones and missiles at Israel, and traders braced for a response. Investors have already been on edge as of late amid climbing oil prices and recent economic data that shows inflation is remaining sticky. Rockier times could be ahead, too, noted Paul Christopher, head of global investment strategy at Wells Fargo Investment Institute. The result was a 1.5-percent weekly drop in the S & P 500 , with Friday's setback exacerbated at least somewhat by a collective clenching-up of risk markets on some geopolitical worry. This dynamic hasn't been reversed, but the signal has grown a bit staticky, draining some conviction from the macro bullish case with the S & P 500 still 24% above the October low. Bull market's backdrop First, it's a bull market, and not a particularly mature or excessively generous one yet. Yet both stocks are still outperforming the S & P this year. The S & P 500 closed Friday at exactly the same level of five weeks earlier, on March 8 – which was perhaps the moment of maximum investor confidence in the "we can have it all" thesis.

There's a party happening in stocks in 2024, and though investors may be reluctant, it could be time to think of taking a few chips off the table. Large-cap fund managers are starting to shy away from several of the biggest companies in the S&P 500, according to a recent report from UBS. The same is true for the argument that the S&P 500 is already on the doorstep of even the most ambitious year-end price targets. BMO Capital Markets"The S&P 500 almost always experiences a technical correction at some point during the second year of bull markets historically," Belski wrote. Even if there's a typical 10% correction exacerbated by weakness in mega caps, Belski wrote that stocks can remain resilient. "Underlying leadership patterns are likely to be very different this year, with significantly more participation coming from non-mega-cap stocks," Belski wrote. Their huge and growing earnings, combined with a large number of shares outstanding, mean that the three companies exert a bigger influence on the S & P 500 earnings picture than any other. Fourth quarter earnings for the entire S & P 500 are expected to rise about 5% over the same period in 2022. For share-weighted earnings, the earnings (or earnings estimates) for each company are multiplied by the shares outstanding. What this means is that companies that are experiencing a rapid increase in their earnings can begin to exert an outsized influence on S & P 500 earnings. In a world where the S & P 500 is expected to see earnings growth of 10% this year, Nvidia's earnings growth is off the charts.

All three major averages posted gains for the third consecutive week, lifted by solid quarterly earnings and positive economic data. Earnings season ramps up next week, with five of the Super Six mega-cap stocks delivering results. Employment numbers are the most important economic data, with Friday's January nonfarm payrolls report carrying the most weight. The January ISM Manufacturing report on Thursday and December's factory orders report Friday are expected to show the sector still in contraction mode. But earnings and commentary this week from peer Sartorious made us encouraged about a return to growth in 2024.

We know all about the Nasdaq-100 index and the 'Magnificent 7' hype lately, but what about the stocks next in line? Well, the Invesco NASDAQ Next Gen 100 ETF (QQQJ) tracks the next biggest 100 Nasdaq stocks after the Nasdaq 100 – roughly Nasdaq stocks Nos. This isn't a surprise given that tech is the biggest sector in the Nasdaq Composite itself. Most importantly, the top 10 NDX stocks represent nearly 46% of the entire index. Apple and Nvidia are "own, don't trade" stocks, so should they be kept as they are, or shrink down? First, let's address our idea of "own, don't trade" stocks. To main a diversified portfolio, we don't want any of our positions, even Apple, to get much bigger than 5-6%. That doesn't mean we don't love the name or no longer view it as an "own, don't trade," it simply means that while it is an "own, don't trade" we also still abide by the view that discipline trumps conviction (diversification and not don't be greedy being the two disciplines of focus in this case) and that overrides the own, don't trade mantra. When we say "don't trade" these two names, we stay invested in both and don't try to catch the next 10% move up or down.

– Thank you, Cathryn, San Francisco We certainly understand and agree it's becoming increasingly difficult to maintain a diversified portfolio that's not dominated by technology stocks. There are also what many investors would think of as tech companies in S & P 500 Communication Services , at an 8.6% weighting. After all, we would say Meta, Alphabet and Amazon are as much tech companies as Apple or Microsoft, with all three considered leaders in artificial intelligence. These are industrial technology companies, not the industrial companies of old. So, using some of the examples provided in the question: Yes, Microsoft and Apple are both considered Information Technology companies.

The benchmark index closed at 4,594.63, nearly 6 points above its previous closing high for 2023 set in late July. The S&P 500 is up over 19% year-to-date after posting its biggest monthly rise in over a year in November. The S&P 500 reached its previous 2023 closing high on July 31, also spurred in part by excitement over developments in artificial intelligence technology. The megacaps' outperformance has increased their combined weight to well over one-fourth of the entire S&P 500, meaning the stocks' moves have outsized influence on the benchmark index. The S&P 500 currently trades at roughly 19 times forward earnings estimates, compared to a historical average of 15.6 times.

That's the conclusion of a new Morgan Stanley research report, which makes us feel really good about where we stand on both Club stocks. Each quarter, Morgan Stanley looks at under-owned stocks and over-owned stocks — basically which ones are overlooked and ready for a hot streak and which ones are crowded and ready to cool off. However, Morgan Stanley said Meta kept its most over-owned crown — and coincidently, its shares closed lower. To be sure, Morgan Stanley maintained an overweight rating on Apple shares. U.S. Dollar and Euro banknotes are seen in this illustration taken July 17, 2022. Deutsche Bank's CVIX (.DBCVIX) - the currency market's version of Wall St's "fear index" of stock volatility and a weighted average of implied "vol" in nine major pairings - has basically imploded. By driving short-term dollar cash rates and U.S. bond yields higher over the past 20 months, the Fed basically sucked cash from the wider investment world and supercharged dollar exchange rates everywhere. Now that it looks done, the buck's finally on the back foot - plumbing levels not seen since August. With implied volatility directionally biased, the dollar index and the CVIX are typically well correlated and both peaked in tandem in same month of September last year.

We always recommend an investor's first $10,000 should go to an S & P 500 index fund. So one option for putting all your money to work without making any one stock position too big is to keep adding to your index fund. The restrictions were removed in response to a deal reached between the country's government and opposition parties for the 2024 election. JPMorgan's index team, which has made no statement as yet on the future treatment of the Venezuelan bonds, has reached out informally to investors to discuss the topic, the sources said. Venezuela and PDVSA have around $60 billion of international bonds outstanding, which are in default. The decision on index membership and weighting is taken by JPMorgan, though any changes usually follow consultations with investors.

The S & P 500 closed at its bear market low a year ago Thursday — ending Oct. 12, 2022, at its lowest close since November 2020 . In hindsight, that dramatic turnaround was the start of a rally that saw the S & P 500 climb 22% from the close on Oct. 12, 2022, through Wednesday. Palo Alto Networks, meanwhile, has successfully pivoted to profitability, joining the S & P 500 as a result, and repeatedly demonstrated the quality of its cybersecurity platform. Indeed, an exchange-traded fund that gives each S & P 500 constituent the same influence — the Invesco S & P 500 Equal Weight ETF — has advanced only 11.2% since Oct. 12, 2022. Viewed through the top-heavy rally lens, though, it's not a surprise to see a number of Club stocks underperforming the S & P 500.
