Former President Barack Obama is wading into the Senate race in Michigan, endorsing Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin and starring in a new ad for her as some voters start to receive absentee ballots in the critical state. It’s the first time this election that voters will see a Senate ad from Obama as Democrats try to keep hold of the chamber, where they hold a 51-49 advantage. In the new ad, called “Make You Proud,” Obama underscores Slotkin’s national security experience before she represented Michigan’s 7th Congressional District. “In the Situation Room, Elissa delivered national security briefings on some of the toughest issues we were dealing with. That’s why I sent Elissa to negotiate on my behalf because she understood when to compromise and when to stand firm,” Obama says in the ad.

Former President Barack Obama will campaign for Vice President Kamala Harris in Pittsburgh next week, his first foray into the election as a battleground-state surrogate. The event, according to a senior Harris campaign official, will launch a larger effort by Obama, who intends to ramp up his campaigning for Harris in the final stretch of the election cycle. “President Obama believes the stakes of this election could not be more consequential and that is why he is doing everything he can to help elect Vice President Harris, Governor Walz and Democrats across the country,” Eric Schulz, a senior adviser to Obama, said in a statement. Harris and Obama’s relationship spans two decades, with the two first meeting as Obama was seeking election to the Senate in 2004. Grassroots fundraising content signed by Obama and events featuring him have generated more than $76 million for the campaign this cycle, a second senior Harris campaign official said.

"They're trying to keep her away," Steve Shurtleff, a former Democratic speaker of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, said of the Harris campaign. Harris’ campaign has acted as if she’s sitting on a lead, even though she has failed to separate from her opponent, former President Donald Trump, others said. That may look different in today’s evolving media environment than prior campaigns, but coupled with campaign events, aggressive organizing and a historic paid media campaign, it’s a winning approach." “They are very cautious,” a person involved in Harris’ race said of her campaign. Harris' campaign has also made overtures to voters in unconventional forums like the gaming site IGN.

The virtual event, organized by Emgage Action, which endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris last week, was the most direct pitch yet to conflicted Muslim and Arab voters from her or Walz. “As-Salaam-Alaikum,” Walz said on the call, using the Arabic greeting, before he turned to the war on many Arab and Muslim voters’ minds. Some Muslim activists and elected officials they say are disappointed to have heard little from the Harris campaign since then. During the campaign, some disaffected Muslim and Arab voters have flocked to third-party candidates like Jill Stein and Cornel West, both of whom picked Muslim running mates and have courted pro-Palestinian voters. “We understand that some Muslim voters, any voter, may feel a moral dilemma voting for [Harris].

Michigan, which Joe Biden narrowly won in 2020, will be a crucial battleground again this November and is home to a large Arab American population. And it’s a playbook that former President Donald Trump’s campaign has tossed aside. It’s a gamble, Trump’s campaign internally acknowledges, but one that they insist is built on data they have collected over nearly a decade and tested for the past six months. Days later, the Michigan state party chairman also plugged 10xVotes when he rolled into Traverse City, Michigan, alongside Trump running mate JD Vance. But rather than courting those voters, Trump’s campaign is in search of new ones. Trump’s campaign has also tried to seize on discord within the Democratic coalition.

"I tell you, I have never voted for a Democrat, but this year, I am proudly casting my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris," Cheney told the crowd. Cheney said in September that both she and her father, Republican former Vice President Dick Cheney, would be voting for Harris over their party's nominee, former President Donald Trump. The Harris campaign has been looking for ways to take advantage of opposition to Trump within the Republican party. Since then, a small but growing number of prominent Republicans have come out in support of Harris' presidential campaign, including former Trump White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson and the Cheneys. "We have plenty of policy disagreements with Vice President Harris.

A supermajority of UAW members at Stellantis' Los Angeles Parts Distribution Center voted to request strike authorization from the International Executive Board if the company and union can't reconcile, the union said Friday morning. The lawsuit argues that if the union does strike, the court "should award Stellantis monetary damages" that result from a breach of contract. UAW President Shawn Fain has routinely said the union will strike if needed, however Stellantis has argued that would be unlawful under the contract. The lawsuit came the same day Fain and union members held their latest rally against Stellantis in suburban Detroit. Stellantis, in the lawsuit, called the grievances a sham designed to "justify mid-contract strikes against Stellantis that otherwise would violate the [contract's] no strike clause."

The news is a particular blow to Vice President Kamala Harris, since the union was the first to endorse Joe Biden's presidential bid in 2020. In a statement, Edward A. Kelly, the union's president, said that the group's executive board voted on Thursday by 1.2% not to endorse. Both presidential campaigns made personal appeals to the union’s members at a convention in Boston in August, with Minnesota Gov. Last month, the Teamsters union, which represents over 1 million truck drivers, freight workers and others, also declined to endorse a presidential candidate. The videos are part of a seven-figure paid media strategy aimed at critical swing voters and a larger effort by the Harris campaign to court Republicans and former Trump supporters. The campaign has also hired strategists to focus specifically on conservative voters, held events to engage Republican voters in battleground states, launched Republicans for Harris to help organize grassroots programs, and rolled out endorsements from prominent Republicans. McCaffery, who lives in Pennsylvania, embodies the type of voter the Harris campaign hopes will back her as polls show the race remains close. This week, the Harris campaign will also be holding Republican voter outreach events in the battleground states across the country. That comes after the campaign launched Republicans for Harris in August and after dozens of notable Republicans, including Cheney and her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, endorsed Harris.

Housing is one of many issues Vance, the Republican nominee, believes are rooted in the arrival of undocumented migrants in America. But many economists caution that connecting rising numbers of immigrants to housing costs is no simple thing. Other economists have noted links between immigrants and increased housing costs. Vance later shared two studies on housing and immigration that showed a link between increased immigration and rising housing costs — though each offered various caveats, including noting that the impact changes over time. Indeed, Zillow data shows a clear upward trend in Springfield rents this year compared with 2023.
