Spring is proceeding apace in this yard, despite my worst fears. After my neighbor’s death last year, a backhoe demolished the house and nearly all the old trees along with it. In most ways, it’s been a glorious spring anyway, despite the ceaseless hammering next door. The spring beauties and woodland violets are nearly bloomed out now, but already other flowers have taken their place. And yet, all spring, our yard has been bereft of nests.

A study released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found 6.4% of adults living alone had feelings of depression in 2021, compared with 4.1% of adults living with others. Overall, 4.5% of adults reported feelings of depression in 2021, with a higher proportion among women (5.2%) than men (3.7%). Among Hispanic adults living alone, 7.3% reported feelings of depression compared with 3.2% from that group who lived with others. Approximately 6.7% of Black adults living alone reported depression versus 4.5% living with others, while 6.3% of white adults living alone reported depression compared with 4.3% who lived with others. While a higher percentage of adults living alone reported feelings of depression compared to those living with others across all household income levels, a higher proportion was found among poorer adults.

The roses that you buy this week from a florist, supermarket or website for Valentine’s Day in all likelihood arrived in the United States through one place: Miami International Airport, the port of entry for about 90 percent of the nation’s imported cut flowers. All year, farmworkers snip flowers by hand, mostly in Colombia and Ecuador, to be sent on cargo planes to Miami, where they are inspected and then loaded on trucks to reach every mainland state. Sometimes, flowers cut in the morning can be in South Florida, a three- or four-hour flight away, by the afternoon. It is a logistical feat, especially in the weeks leading up to Feb. 14 — one of the flower industry’s two peak holidays, along with Mother’s Day. Yet few consider that when they pick up bouquets for $20 at Target.

There is a certain irony to the fact that of all the shows that took place during couture last week, the one designed to be the most off-line — the one conceived as an in-person experience rather than as a simple catwalk — is the one that ended up going the most viral. The one that no one seems to be able to stop talking about — not the fashion world, nor its millions of followers. I am speaking of the Maison Margiela Artisanal show by John Galliano. The most substantial Mark Rothko retrospective in a generation has opened at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, and it is a show of monumental dispersion: a pull-out-all-the-stops blockbuster where life passes into vapor. From 1949, when his early figurative pictures finally liquefied into stains of translucent color, Rothko painted with no allusions, no particulars. A lot of people find his large paintings consoling, or seek the Romantic sublime in the depths of his reds and violets. “Behind the color lies the cataclysm,” he said in 1959 — a citation that rarely makes the auction preview catalogs.
