Mark Critchley and Chris Waugh analyse the main talking points from Old Trafford…What does this mean for Manchester United? Mark CritchleyWhat does this mean for Newcastle United? Howe’s side are level on points with Manchester United, but above Ten Hag’s team on goal difference, a factor which could yet prove critical. Newcastle’s season-long away form, which is merely the 15th-best in the Premier League, has held them back throughout the campaign. What next for Newcastle United?

The crush of people at the rally was suffocating, although in India a crowd is no index of popularity. At 53, with a well-salted beard and serious eyes, he’s too old to be called Congress’s “scion,” but he still wears the sheen of dynasty. Then, on the heels of several corruption scandals, the mighty party — 140 years old next year — came unstuck. One of Modi’s successes has been not just to trounce the Congress Party but also to persuade people that the party has weakened India and emasculated its Hindus. (Amnesty itself halted its work in India in 2020, in the midst of what it later called an “incessant witch hunt” by the government.)

I would waste time and energy fantasizing about relationships with men who I inexplicably found flawless, but in reality were emotionally or physically unavailable. I've spent 10 years interviewing experts on longing, as well as people who've experienced limerence, for my podcast The Longing Lab, TEDx talk, and forthcoming book, "When Longing Becomes Your Lover." The emotional reward was the happy hormone dopamine I'd feel from imagining a relationship together or anticipating a response. Writing it down helped me believe it — and recognize my limerent feelings toward unavailable men as a dead end. I found his love and availability very attractive — something I never would have seen in my 20s and 30s.

Whether it's starting a business or mastering an ambitious skill, having big career goals can be exciting but overwhelming. How do you successfully achieve them while navigating the demands and responsibilities of daily life? As a researcher in the science of happiness, I was lucky: I was able to learn the secrets that helped me make my journey a little easier. Identify your 'what' and 'why'My "what" was writing a book, and my "why" was to help people find greater happiness. One study that inspired me studied scientists who were striving to achieve extremely long-term objectives, like finding cancer treatments and seeking out extraterrestrial life.

Practically, Engoron’s decision will impose severe financial and personal strain on Trump as he’s emerging as the almost certain Republican presidential nominee. “He’s already said he’s going to spend most of this year in a courtroom, not on a campaign trail. Flouted rules, new realities and a busted legal strategyTrump’s belief that the rules are for others defines his business and political life. Yet this refusal to ever admit defeat also appears to be leading Trump into dangerous legal territory. His flawed philosophy that in business and life, it’s all about closing one more deal, means that even crushing defeats like the 2020 election and his fraud trial cannot change him.

Any sign of affection just didn't happen when we were young children, and it didn't change as we grew older. My parents told me to get my foot unstuck through angry shouts. When my foot came out of the shoe, I promptly fell backward out of the tree and hit the ground with a groan. And even though I'm an extremely caring parent, I can see how my parents may have felt overwhelmed. Mamadi Doumbouya for The New York Times Talk A Leading Memory Researcher Explains How to Make Precious Moments LastOur memories form the bedrock of who we are. Tell me more about what you mean when you say “illusion.” I probably overstated it with the word “illusion,” but there is an illusionary component. But if you think about it from an evolutionary perspective, memory, often, is educated guesses by the brain about what’s important. You know, the training environment I was in was very down on psychoanalysis, but it always comes back to memory. We have these little compartments that are rooted somewhat in memory that we can access at different moments.

‘Happy Days’ Got Us Unstuck in Time

Mention “Happy Days” to TV viewers of a certain age (raises hand) and the first thing they remember might be not an episode or a scene or a catchphrase but a lunchbox. To remember “Happy Days” is to remember your youth, which was also the function of “Happy Days” when it premiered in 1974. Now “Happy Days” is 50 years old. Last year, that series’s sequel, “That ’90s Show,” created a ’90s version of the ’70s version of the ’50s. “Happy Days” was nostalgic because the teenagers weren’t smoking weed.

Australia outclass Finland to return to Davis Cup final

MALAGA, Spain, Nov 24 (Reuters) - Australia reached a second successive Davis Cup final when Alex de Minaur overpowered Emil Ruusuvuori 6-4 6-3 after Alexei Popyrin beat Otto Virtanen 7-6(5) 6-2 to earn the 28-time champions a 2-0 win over Finland on Friday. "Extremely proud moment but I could have not done it without these guys," De Minaur said, pointing to his team. Popyrin, a late switch for the injured Thanasi Kokkinakis, grabbed the first break in the second set when Virtanen hit two successive double faults as Australia sensed an opportunity. "It's nerves that I've never experienced before in my life, the nerves playing the first tie, the first rubber of a Davis Cup, winning my first live rubber of a Davis Cup. De Minaur said Australia would be tricky opponents for any team in the final and tipped the doubles duo of Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell to play a vital role.

I told my speech therapist that I was frustrated that I haven’t been able to write fiction since experiencing a traumatic brain injury — which means that I am still, after nearly two years, unable to do my job. Over 1.5 million Americans experience a traumatic brain injury each year. The toll of traumatic brain injuries and the mystery of how the brain repairs itself, or doesn’t, is still perplexing and under-researched. I had to invent a new process in order to tackle the project: ideas inscribed one at a time, thought by thought, sentence by sentence, on note cards, each composed over days, weeks, months. Once there was a queen who fell under a spell, causing her to sink into a deep sleep for a long, long time.

The Queen’s question returns with a vengeance
  + stars: | 2023-10-06 | by ( Felix Martin | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
The world’s leading central banks had spent the previous two decades focusing on low inflation, neglecting risks to financial stability. Central bankers counter correctly that predictive accuracy is not the same as explanatory power. Yet it is far from clear how today’s independent central banks should respond to these overtly political struggles. In 2021, when the Phillips Curve was asleep at the wheel, the growth in the money supply was flashing red. The unfortunate truth is that there are many answers to the Queen’s question this time round – but no single magic solution.

New York CNN —PacWest Bancorp (PACW) is set to merge with Banc of California in a $400 million equity deal, according to a joint announcement the banks released Tuesday afternoon, ahead of their second-quarter earnings results. The move aims to restore confidence in the sector after the collapse of three regional banks earlier this year. Banc of California reported a much smaller decline in net income of $2.4 million last quarter. PacWest has been under considerable pressure after Silicon Valley Bank failed in March, sending shock waves across regional banks in the United States. Once the deal closes, PacWest shareholders are set to receive 0.66 of a share of Banc of California for each share they own.

There will be up to $1.5 billion of costs related to separating the health care business, 3M has said. Its interest cover, after backing out estimated operating income from health care, would fall to about 4 times from 11 times. And its net debt, using all these assumptions and excluding the health care division, would swell to nearly 5 times EBITDA from less than 2 times. Back out $2.5 billion from health care, as estimated by the Morgan Stanley team, and $1.5 billion of capital expenditure costs noted by Wolfe Research. For example, the water settlement, as drafted, only envisions $4.6 billion of outlays through 2025, and the rest over the ensuing 11 years.

What do we know about the US solider in North Korea?

Seoul, South Korea CNN —For the first time in decades a US soldier is believed to be in North Korean custody. The US Army has identified the soldier who crossed the demarcation line into North Korea on Tuesday as Pvt. The last American known to be held by North Korea was Bruce Byron Lowrance, who, according to North Korean state-run media, crossed from China into North Korea. While in North Korea, he appeared in propaganda films, taught North Korean spies English and spent up to eight hours a day studying the writings of North Korean leaders. He was allowed to leave North Korea in 2004, two years after his wife, a Japanese national who was kidnapped from her home in Japan in 1978, was allowed to leave North Korea under a deal between Pyongyang and Tokyo.

US annual inflation slowed to 3% last month, according to the latest Consumer Price Index released Wednesday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The June annual rate is down from 4% in May and landed slightly below economists’ expectations for a 3.1% increase, according to Refinitiv. Starting in March 2022, the central bank rolled out 10 consecutive interest rate hikes to tame inflation, finally hitting pause last month. And June of last year was monumental: Annual inflation soared to 9.1%, the highest in more than 40 years largely because of record-high energy costs. So the Fed and economists have been keyed in on what’s happening with core inflation, particularly core services.

Nigeria today faces record debt, unemployment is worryingly high, and power shortages have contributed to years of anaemic growth. What might get this stock market unstuck

Clearly the market is captive of strong, opposing and somewhat unpredictable currents, as the passengers argue over what might get stocks unstuck, and in which direction. Excluding financial stocks, for instance, the S & P 500 would be up 11% for the year. Here is the equal-weighted S & P 500 vs. the Nasdaq 100 since the end of 2021. The stock market has, coincidentally or not, carved a similar path so far this year as it did to begin 2011. The S & P 500 that year raced higher to print a 7% gain into a February high, then chopped sideways.
Tucker Carlson’s Code of Whiteness
  + stars: | 2023-05-03 | by ( A.O. Scott | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
At stake is not the life or safety of the anonymous “Antifa kid,” but rather Carlson’s own perception of himself. That phrase, a syntactic echo of “it’s not how white men fight,” establishes the stakes, which are not so much Carlson’s ethical probity as his racial superiority. “The Antifa creep is a human being,” he writes. I should be bothered by it.” The “shoulds” indicate that Carlson isn’t really bothered — is still actually gloating — but is aware that this reaction poses a problem. If he takes pleasure in watching an Antifa creep get pounded, that makes him as bad as the Antifa creep.
Want to Explore Your Childhood? Start With a Floor Plan.

Like most other gated suburbs in medium-density Chinese cities, ours was a cluster of nondescript buildings, countless lives piled to the skies. If Vermeer conjured a corner of my childhood bedroom on canvas and asked me to finish the rest, I’d have a hard time. Only floor plans have given my memories of movement a tangible form, a shape for the routine motions that made up my days. I walked through the front door and into the living room. A floor plan is the only way I’ll retain anything of that route to the window.
