☆ Israeli former national security officials and business leaders blast Netanyahu ahead of his speech to Congress

CNN —A group of senior Israeli figures including former national security officials, academics and business leaders have sent US congressional leadership a blistering letter accusing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is set to speak to Congress on Wednesday, of threatening both Israeli and American national security. “Netanyahu severely harms the US national security interests through his approach to this war, which adversely impacts American policy in the Middle East and beyond and further endangers Israel,” it continues. The Obama White House had been blindsided by Netanyahu’s decision to address Congress after another invitation from a Republican House speaker, John Boehner. Typically, a vice president, in their role as president of the Senate, would attend and sit prominently on the dais. However, Vice President Kamala Harris will also miss Netanyahu’s Wednesday speech due to travel, which Biden’s national security adviser Jake Sullivan said Friday he did not expect to be a repeat of 2015.

With the announcement of his running mate, Silicon Valley attorney and entrepreneur Nicole Shanahan, Kennedy’s campaign will expand its ballot access. On the surface, this double dislike seems puzzling: Shouldn’t one of the two parties have figured out how to elevate a more popular general election candidate? Americans overwhelmingly want more than two political parties. But in a close race between the two unpopular frontrunners, Kennedy will almost certainly be a chaos factor. Kennedy — whose campaign is in many respects a product of this doom loop — is a deeply flawed messenger for change.

He, along with other non-major-party candidates, has a real chance to affect the outcome of the 2024 election. Perot is a bit of an exception in that independent or third-party candidates usually fade as an election nears. George Wallace topped out at 21% in pre-election polling as a third-party candidate before picking up 14% when the votes were cast. Given all that, it’s no surprise we’re seeing other independent and third-party candidates jumping or potentially jumping into the 2024 race. He was entertaining the idea of running as a third-party candidate earlier this year.

CNN —Democrats welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Capitol Hill earlier Thursday, while Republicans were far more split. At the beginning of the war, Zelensky sported a 77% favorability rating among Democrats and a 61% favorability rating among Republicans, according to a March 2022 Quinnipiac University poll. A July 2023 Gallup poll found that Zelensky’s favorability rating with Republicans had declined to 51%. In fact, Russia’s favorability rating among Republicans – and Democrats – has declined significantly from a few years ago. For example, Republicans were more likely than Democrats to say that the Korean War was “useless,” according to a 1951 Gallup poll.

A survey of potential Republican primary voters who watched the debate conducted by The Washington Post, FiveThirtyEight and Ipsos showed 26% of voters thought Ramaswamy won the debate, second highest behind DeSantis. Still, the Ramaswamy campaign said it raised $600,000 in the day after the debate, the largest single-day total since its launch. The Ramaswamy campaign plans to continue visiting Iowa and answering voter questions like Christensen’s around the state, Chapman told CNN.

Trump is becoming more unfavorable amongst Republicans and Republican-leaning Independents. Trump's "unfavorable" rating rose from 24% in 2022 to 32% in 2023's most recent July poll. The findings from the Pew Research poll come at the same time Trump has begun to separate himself from the rest of the GOP presidential playing field. While Republicans appear to be slowly shifting how favorably they view the 45th president, the Pew survey found that Democrats' view of the former president hasn't shifted over the past year: 91% of Democrats found Trump "unfavorable" in 2022 as well as 2023. The Pew Research survey did not ask respondents what shifted their opinion of Trump, but the former president has been in the spotlight several times over the past year for non-campaign-related affairs.

CNN —The evidence in the indictment against Donald Trump for his alleged mishandling of classified documents after leaving office can seem “jaw-dropping”. Keep in mind, though, that 50% of Americans indicated in an ABC News/Ipsos poll after his New York indictment related to alleged hush money payments to adult film star Stormy Daniels. Biden was a point ahead of him in an average of national surveys before the New York indictment. There have been some signs, however, that Trump’s post-New York indictment bump has stalled and even receded somewhat. Whether another indictment is the way to eat into his support among Republicans is a whole other question.

Mike Pence gambled his future to become President Donald Trump's running mate and vice president. Two years after leaving office, it appears all for naught, as he can't seem to find a lane to compete against his former boss. This, in part, led to some Trump supporters storming the Capitol whilst chanting "hang Mike Pence." But despite this, Monmouth University polling from March 2023 shows him lagging behind other prospective candidates, like DeSantis and Trump, in favorability polls among evangelical Republicans. According to Morning Consult's surveying, Pence once again received the second-most "unfavorable" polling behind only former Rep. Liz Cheney.
