The mere prospect of a future settlement has already caused some Americans to change their behavior when buying and selling their homes. If approved by a judge, the settlement comes with new rules for Realtors. Potential for lower homebuying costsThe new rules could help lower home prices, experts say. Sales commissions, traditionally shared between a buyers’ agent and the agent who lists a home on the market, are usually between 5% and 6% of a home’s selling price. But, for the time being, buyers’ agents will still be able to see that Hanley isn’t offering them compensation, potentially disincentivizing them from showing his home to clients.

The demographic crisis has become one of Japan’s most pressing issues, with multiple governments failing to reverse the double blow of a falling fertility rate and swelling elderly population. But Japan’s crisis is unique in that it’s been decades in the making, experts say – meaning its impact is particularly evident now, with relief unlikely to come anytime soon. ‘Not reversible’The first thing to understand about Japan’s population crisis is that it’s only partly behavioral, said James Raymo, professor of sociology and demography at Princeton University. As of last year, Japan’s fertility rate sat at 1.3. The real problem is that the fertility rate has been consistently low for so long.

The court scheduled 80 minutes for the arguments that will kick off shortly after 10 a.m. Though the 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868, the court has never before wrestled with a claim based on the insurrection clause. The case, Trump v. Anderson, is on appeal from the Colorado Supreme Court, which in December ruled that the former president is no longer eligible to serve. Trump is simultaneously juggling four criminal prosecutions – including one that could reach the Supreme Court in coming days dealing with whether he can claim immunity from criminal prosecution. While the stakes for Trump are enormous, they are also significant for the Supreme Court.

But the episode reveals the unique position Musk found himself in as the war in Ukraine unfolded. Even as cellular phone and internet networks had been destroyed, the Starlink terminals allowed Ukraine to fight and stay connected. But once Ukraine began to use Starlink terminals for offensive attacks against Russia, Musk started to second-guess that decision. “How am I in this war?” Musk asks Isaacson. SpaceX had spent tens of millions of its own money sending the satellite equipment to Ukraine, according to Musk.

Reuters —Vietnam has banned Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated film “Barbie” from domestic distribution over a scene featuring a map that shows China’s unilaterally claimed territory in the South China Sea, state media reported on Monday. (Warner Bros’, like CNN, is a unit of Warner Bros. The U-shaped “nine-dash line” is used on Chinese maps to illustrate its claims over vast areas of the South China Sea, including swathes of what Vietnam considers its continental shelf, where it has awarded oil concessions. “Barbie” is the latest movie to be banned in Vietnam for depicting China’s controversial nine-dash line, which was repudiated in an international arbitration ruling by a court in The Hague in 2016. Vietnam and China have long had overlapping territorial claims to a potentially energy-rich stretch in the South China Sea.

In 2019 the Vietnamese government pulled DreamWorks' animated film "Abominable" and last year it banned Sony's action movie "Unchartered" for the same reason. Think of investing in crypto as investing in technology for the data economy. Crypto is unchartered territory for most, but the 76-year-old asset manager has dived deep into research in recent years believing digital assets will transform asset management, capital markets and the increasingly digital, data-driven world at large. "You don't expect it to end just at just Bitcoin and Ethereum , and we expect over the next several years, several things that continue to unfold and find application," Roger Bayston, Franklin Templeton's head of digital assets, told CNBC Pro at the Digital Assets Council of Financial Professionals' VISION conference in Austin, Texas. Since 2019, the firm has operated node validators on various blockchains – including Ethereum, Solana , Cardano and Polkadot . Bayston said investors who have the stomach for high volatility and uncertainty could be rewarded in the future.

May 10 (Reuters) - Icahn Enterprises LP (IEP.O) said on Wednesday it had received inquiries from U.S. prosecutors about its operations on May 3, a day after a short-seller accused it of over-valuing its assets. The disclosure from Icahn Enterprises that it had received inquiries from prosecutors in the Southern District of New York came as the firm posted a surprise quarterly loss, after volatility in markets hit returns on its investments. It added that the prosecutors had not made any claims or allegations against the company or Icahn. Icahn has called the report "self-serving" and said he stands by Icahn Enterprises statements about his finances. Excluding one-time items, Icahn Enterprises reported a loss of 11 cents per share, missing analysts' average estimate of a 19 cents profit, according to Refinitiv data.

"Obviously it's a bit of a monkey off our back and we still got plenty of work to do but this one obviously feels really great," said Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews. Toronto's last postseason series win came long before the arrival of gifted goal scorer Matthews (2016), explosive winger Mitch Marner (2016) and durable captain Tavares (2018). And for once the Maple Leafs, who had gone 0-11 in series-clinching games since they last advanced, gave their eternally optimistic fan base a reason to celebrate. The Tavares goal less than five minutes into overtime allowed the entire Maple Leafs organization and their fan base to breathe a collective sigh of relief. The Maple Leafs will next face the winner of Sunday's game between the top-seeded Boston Bruins and Florida Panthers.
Analyst Adam Jonas is expecting a "challenging" 2023 for auto earnings on the back of declining demand and deflation – particularly for electric vehicle makers. But Jonas' price target implies the stock could gain 10.6% from where it closed Tuesday. Jonas cut the expected electric vehicle penetration forecasts for 2025 and 2030 to 11% and 26%, respectively, from 13% and 32%. Tesla and Rivian are both electric vehicle makers among his top picks. The stock, which is down 48.4% this year, has a price target that shows it could gain 34% over Tuesday's close.
Regulators and policymakers have been examining whether companies' use of such complex instruments, largely unregulated, threatens financial stability. "The volatility in ... energy markets ... has also affected the derivative markets which energy sector firms use to manage risk," the ECB said in its biannual Financial Stability Review, pointing to a concentration of such activity with a small number of big energy firms. The central bank said that about half of energy traders with power and gas derivatives could be hit with similar margin calls should prices rise. Policymakers in Brussels are also concerned and recently circulated a paper suggesting extending tough rules applied to banks to energy firms that trade derivatives. Energy companies say derivatives are chiefly to hedge or protect themselves against swings in prices.
The ECB, which bought 5 trillion euros of bonds ($4.9 trillion) over the past decade to lift low inflation, now finds itself battling record high inflation at 10%. "This consideration also makes the practical implementation of ECB QT significantly harder," BofA said. That would reduce its balance sheet by a "manageable" 155 billion euros in 2023 and 300 billion euros in 2024, ING reckons. An eventual wind-down of PEPP holdings could add to balance sheet reductions in 2025 worth a total 388 billion euros, ING said. AllianceBernstein portfolio manager Nick Sanders said he was "sceptical" how the ECB could achieve QT with those protections in place.
A liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker is tugged towards a thermal power station in Futtsu, east of Tokyo, Japan November 13, 2017. The global LNG market has more than doubled in size since 2011, ushering in dozens of new entrants and the expansion of smaller players in Asia. The capital needed to trade the market soared after benchmark LNG prices rose from record lows below $2 per million British thermal units (mmBtu) in 2020 to highs of $57 in August. LNG spot prices price stood at $40.50/mmBtu then. 'DIFFICULT TO COMPETE'High LNG cargo prices are also widening energy poverty globally as some cargoes, initially destined for poorer nations, end up being diverted to European buyers.
