Freetrade reported adjusted earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) of £100,000 ($124,863) in the first quarter of 2024, according to unaudited financial statements shared with CNBC. Freetrade still generated a loss of £8.3 million in 2023, down from the £28.8 million loss it racked up the year before. "We defied difficult market conditions and delivered healthy growth in 2023 while dramatically reducing losses" in 2022, said Adam Dodds, CEO and founder of Freetrade. Net inflows totalled £130 million in the first quarter, too, as retail investor activity grew in response to resurgent markets last year. Equity markets saw serious drops in 2022 as a result of macroeconomic uncertainty and higher interest rates stoked by Russia's full-fledged invasion of Ukraine, which triggered a risk-off trade around the world.

The regional bank reported disappointing earnings, stoking fears of commercial real estate trouble. AdvertisementA smaller lender is facing a firesale of its stock fueled by concerns about its stability, echoing the regional-banking problems last year that stoked fears of a full-blown financial crisis and commercial real estate meltdown. AdvertisementThe increases hit the value of their fixed-income and commercial real estate portfolios. In particular, commercial real estate is under pressure from ongoing remote working, tighter credit availability as lenders have pulled back, and higher debt costs, all of which have weighed on asset values. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told lawmakers this week she expects the commercial real estate pressures to "put a loss of stress" on property owners, although she expected it to be manageable, Bloomberg reported.

Shares of French train manufacturer Alstom plummeted by up to 38% on Thursday after the company slashed its free cash flow forecast. In unaudited half-year results released on Wednesday evening, the company said its free cash flow had fallen from negative 45 million euros ($47 million) to negative 1.15 billion euros. It also said it now expects free cash flow in a range of negative 500-750 million euros for the full year, compared to a prior forecast of "significantly positive." The initial share decline wiped roughly 2.9 billion euros ($3.1 billion) from Alstom's market value, Reuters reported. This, combined with legacy projects being finalized at the same time, is weighing on the free cash flow in this first half," the company said in a statement.

French train manufacturer Alstom failed to open Thursday as trading of its shares was suspended. Shares were set to decline around 35%, according to LSEG data cited by Reuters. In an update after the market close on Wednesday, Alstom released unaudited half-year results showing its free cash flow had fallen from negative 45 million euros ($47 million) to negative 1.15 billion euros, and is now expected to be in a range of negative 500-750 million euros for the full year, from a prior forecast of "significantly positive." May 9 (Reuters) - SVB Financial Group will not be able to meet the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's deadline for reporting its quarterly results, the bankrupt parent of Silicon Valley Bank disclosed in a filing on Tuesday. SVB Financial said its limited staff was dedicated to exploring strategic alternatives for the remaining businesses. Californian regulators shuttered Silicon Valley Bank in early March and appointed the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) as receiver. The failures of SVB and Signature Bank triggered the biggest banking crisis since 2008, fueling volatility in the stocks of several regional lenders and exacerbating recession fears. Late in February 2023, China Renaissance said in an exchange filing that Bao Fan, its star dealmaker, was co-operating with authorities in their investigation. Boutique investment bank China Renaissance Holdings said it would delay its audited annual results and suspend its stock trading from Monday, after mainland authorities took away its chairman, Bao Fan, to co-operate with an investigation. "While the company has used its best efforts to facilitate the requests of the auditors," those requests are not matters within the control of China Renaissance, the bank said in the filing, adding that the board "was not able to reasonably estimate when it would meet to approve" the 2022 annual results. Bao, who is also CEO, started the bank in 2005 with a two-person team, seeking to match capital-hungry startups with venture capitalist and private equity investors. The bank had an unaudited loss of 563.8 million yuan ($81.8 million) for 2022, compared with 1.6 billion yuan worth of net income for the year earlier, Sunday's filing showed.
