Renting your home to strangers for money wasn't even on the horizon when my husband and I bought our first house almost 20 years ago. I thought renting our house to race-goers would be an easy way to make a quick paycheck. We were early Airbnb adoptersIt didn't go well at first, though, with our first guests writing us a bad check. Courtesy of the auhorAlthough it's commonplace now, in those early days, friends thought we'd lost it when we let strangers stay in our house. A beautiful house that just needed some work, with a third floor guest suite and a carriage house, it had tons of potential as a short-term rental rental.

"Based on discussions with the Trump Organization, my understanding is that the Trump Organization does not intend to develop any estimations of value for any entity, the Trump Organization as a whole, or the guarantors' collateral," Jones wrote. Donald Trump no longer intends to calculate his own net worth for financial statements, this excerpt from a new report reveals. He has issued these net-worth statements — 20- to 30-page balance sheets formally called Statements of Financial Condition — since at least 2004. The firm declared the whole previous decade's worth of net-worth statements unreliable in 2022, saying it would stop preparing them. New York attorney general's officeThroughout the decade's worth of net-worth statements, Trump ignored generally accepted accounting principles, the AG and judge found.

At the time, he was bringing in between $25,000 and $30,000 a month from his personal real estate portfolio, he said. "I deployed that $7 million and bought about $25 million worth of property within 10 months," he told BI. His second fund closed at just under $24 million. "Put 5% down," he advised (many new investors get started with FHA loans that allow you to put down as little as 3.5%). Letitia James won a $454 million judgment against Trump, his penalty for a decade of fraud. She and Trump are now fighting over her claims that he withheld evidence from her fraud probe. "The Court is well within its authority to determine if Defendants and their counsel facilitated that perjury by withholding of incriminating documents," James argued in Tuesday night's letter. AdvertisementAt a hearing in April of 2022, he compared getting Trump's documents to "pulling teeth." Out of some 900,000 documents turned over, only ten were "custodial" Trump documents, meaning business files in the former president's direct custody.

CNN —Former Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg, who admitted to testifying falsely in Donald Trump’s civil fraud case, was sentenced on Wednesday to five months in jail on perjury charges. Weisselberg also admitted to testifying falsely at the civil fraud trial last fall but that is not among the charges to which he pleaded guilty. As part of the plea deal, prosecutors agreed to recommend Weisselberg serve a sentence of five months in jail. It is the second guilty plea by Weisselberg, who in 2022 pleaded guilty to 15 counts of tax fraud and testified in the trial of two Trump Org. Weisselberg was central to the financial dealings but neither prosecutors nor Trump’s attorneys said they plan to call him as a witness.

AG Letitia James plans to go after Trump's cash and property if he doesn't pay his civil fraud debt. Is the ball in Letitia James' court? "The burden is on Letitia James to find Trump's assets" and decide what she wants garnished or auctioned, he said. D'Orazio predicts James would first target the cash that Trump and the Trump Organization keep in New York-registered bank accounts. He would then remit $95 million to the Attorney General's Office, and that would go toward paying Trump's judgment.

On Monday in Manhattan, Allen Weisselberg pleaded guilty to two state felony counts of perjury. Both lies involved the size of Donald Trump's Trump Tower penthouse on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. AdvertisementAllen Weisselberg had little choice but to plead guilty to perjury after Manhattan prosecutors caught him blatantly lying about lying, as they revealed in court Monday. Weisselberg was at that sit-down with Forbes, assistant Manhattan district attorney Gary Fishman said Monday, during the ex-CFO's plea hearing. Engoron and state officials have contended that the square footage was intentionally inflated by Trump and Weisselberg as far back as 2012.

Practically, Engoron’s decision will impose severe financial and personal strain on Trump as he’s emerging as the almost certain Republican presidential nominee. “He’s already said he’s going to spend most of this year in a courtroom, not on a campaign trail. Flouted rules, new realities and a busted legal strategyTrump’s belief that the rules are for others defines his business and political life. Yet this refusal to ever admit defeat also appears to be leading Trump into dangerous legal territory. His flawed philosophy that in business and life, it’s all about closing one more deal, means that even crushing defeats like the 2020 election and his fraud trial cannot change him.

In addition to the $355 million penalty — payback of what the judge deemed “ill-gotten gains” from his spurious financial statements — Trump is required to pay interest on that amount. James’ office calculates that, to date, Trump owes an additional $98.6 million in interest, bringing his total penalty to $453.5 million. Trump used $170 million of the $375 million to pay off a loan on the property. — $60 million, plus interest, from selling the rights to manage a New York City golf course in June 2023. A Trump fraud-trial witness's possible perjury should not delay a verdict, NY officials argue. They say it's "hardly surprising" if Trump co-defendant Allen Weisselberg lied on the stand. Weisselberg "lacks credibility" anyway, the officials, from the NY AG's office, wrote Wednesday. "If true, he should be held to account fully for his actions," Wallace wrote of Weisselberg. Business Insider has spoken with a handful of real-estate investors who own profitable properties and asked what they look for in the acquisition phase. Go for multi-family propertiesA multi-family is a single building divided to house more than one family living separately and ranges from duplexes to triplexes and fourplexes. The idea is that your tenant's rent will cover some (or all) of your housing costs. Note that not all markets have an abundance of multi-family properties. Opinion: Marjorie Taylor Greene botches the explanation

We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. CNN —On the day after Republicans lost pivotal races in Kentucky, Ohio and Virginia last week, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene offered a diagnosis for her party’s ills. On Tuesday, Ohio voters passed an amendment to the state constitution that guarantees abortion rights. The disconnect may or may not cost Trump votes in 2024, but it’s hurting Republicans up and down the ballot. “Democrats will win in 2024 by making the election a choice, not just a referendum on Biden’s performance in office.

The judge in this civil case has already ruled that Mr. Trump’s business empire gave inflated asset numbers to lenders, including by almost tripling the square footage of his Trump Tower residence. “They were not really documents that the banks paid much attention to,” Mr. Trump told the court, according to news accounts. Why was his Trump Tower triplex claimed as 30,000 square feet, instead of the actual 11,000?

The high-stakes civil case strikes at the heart of Trump’s brand – his real estate empire. New York Attorney General Letitia James is suing Trump for $250 million and seeking to bar him from doing business in the state. Trump’s attacks in a vacuum weren’t particularly remarkable – he’s used the same barbs throughout the course of the trial, which he’s attended repeatedly as a spectator. Trump’s rhetoric prompts an angry response from the judgeEngoron tried at the outset of Trump’s testimony to stop the former president from making speeches and instead answer the questions, but it did little to change Trump’s approach. “There’s a disclaimer clause where you don’t have to get sued by the attorney general of New York,” Trump said.
