Read previewBack in 2019, The Cut published a bombshell investigation into a pattern of concerning student behavior at Sarah Lawrence College. After "The Stolen Kids of Sarah Lawrence" was published in April 2019, a joint FBI and NYPD task force began investigating the allegations. Ray (born Lawrence Grecco) was indicted on charges including sex trafficking, forced labor, conspiracy, racketeering, tax evasion, and exploitation. In early 2023, Judge Lewis Liman sentenced Ray, then 63, to serve 60 years in prison. Later that year, several of the cult's survivors filed a lawsuit against Sarah Lawrence, saying the school failed to protect them.

Used EVs now cost less than their gas counterparts, with the gap ballooning since February. AdvertisementConsumers are pumping the brakes on electric-vehicle demand as technological limitations erase the premium buyers used to be willing to pay. For the first time, used EVs are less expensive than their traditional gas counterparts. Not only are prices lower, they're also plummeting at a much steeper clip, a recent report from iSeeCars said. According to the study, the average used EV fell $265 below the typical gas car in February, marking the trend's start.

The summer after my sophomore and junior years at Harvard University, I interned at Bridgewater Associates, the world's largest hedge fund. AdvertisementAnd while I definitely see parallels between my time at Bridgewater and that "Black Mirror" episode, I look back fondly on my time there. AdvertisementAuthenticity is a big thing at Bridgewater, so I went into the interview wanting to be completely myself. I worked on a lot of diversity initiatives, figuring out how to make Bridgewater more streamlined and accessible to employees. It helped shape who I am today, especially how I think about feedback, work, and the relationships I have at work.

Opinion | How to Deal With the National Trauma of Jan. 6
  + stars: | 2024-06-23 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “In Search of the Lost Altar of Oblivion,” by Linda Kinstler (Opinion guest essay, June 16), about how America is still processing the events of Jan. 6 and other traumas:Like Dr. Kinstler, I too have been unable to find any surviving trace of an “altar of oblivion” at the Acropolis in Athens. Perhaps the plain answer is that there never was one. After all, the ancient Athenians were far too smart to erect an architectural contradiction in terms — a memorial to the very act of forgetting. But forgetting is what oblivion is all about, and oblivion — not for themselves but for inconvenient truths — is what careerist politicians then and now have always craved, eager as they are to sweep embarrassing facts under history’s carpet. Remembering the Jan. 6 insurrection in all its ugliness, not forgetting it and naïvely moving on, is precisely what America needs if we are to preserve a democracy worth saving.

Scott Wren, a senior global market strategist at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, recently noted that market breadth is abnormally narrow. He found that the five best performers in the S&P 500 accounted for nearly three-fifths of its exceptional 10.6% year-to-date gain through May 31. That fate will soon apply to the S&P 500, Wren warned. Such a sell-off would take the S&P 500 below 5,000 for the first time since April. "And it's tough to be patient when the S&P 500 set a bunch of all-time high records."

Recent headlines suggest that our nation’s business leaders are embracing the presidential candidate Donald Trump. His campaign would have you believe that our nation’s top chief executives are returning to support Mr. Trump for president, touting declarations of support from some prominent financiers like Steve Schwarzman and David Sacks. Mr. Trump continues to suffer from the lowest level of corporate support in the history of the Republican Party. I know this because I have worked with roughly 1,000 chief executives a year, running a school for them, which I started 35 years ago, and I speak with business leaders almost every day. The reality is that the top corporate leaders working today, like many Americans, aren’t entirely comfortable with either Mr. Trump or President Biden.

The Costs of Caring for Pets
  + stars: | 2024-06-23 | by ( Katie Thomas | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Pets these days are just like us. Their health care is becoming more human, too — for better and for worse. Decades ago, animal care was relatively rudimentary. Veterinarians usually owned their own clinics, and the options to treat a sick or injured pet were limited. For pets and the people who love them, the advances are welcome.
