As the franchise owner of an Elmer’s family restaurant in southern Oregon featuring German pancakes “almost as big as Crater Lake” and omelets stuffed with local Tillamook Cheddar cheese, David R. Thomason has always tended to his customers, even before they walk through the front door. But these days, he is more worried about the ones who come in the side entrance, which leads to a bar lounge where customers can bet on slotlike machines operated by the Oregon Lottery until 2 a.m.Like many of the state’s 3,800 video lottery retailers who pump almost $1.7 billion into the state’s coffers, Mr. Thomason is waiting for the U.S. Department of Interior to decide whether two Oregon tribes will be allowed to claim a much bigger stake in state gambling revenues by opening casinos in urban areas, far from their reservations along the coast. “I’m adamantly opposed to the tribal expansion,” Mr. Thomason said on a recent weekday morning, when four of six gaming terminals were in use, and a few customers were nursing drinks. “My belief is that we would see as much as a 25 percent drop in volume.”

☆ Alaska Airlines has created a coffee that it says tastes better in the sky

Alaska has created a custom blend with Portland-based roaster Stumptown to make a coffee that’s immune from the altitude-changing effects that airborne-served coffee typically creates, including tasting bitter and weak. The custom coffee, a first for a major airline, will exclusively be served on every Alaska flight, including its regional carrier Horizon Air, by December 1. Taste and smell are inextricably combined and people’s sense of smell is significantly altered in the sky. Alaska even taste-tested the blend with creamer and Biscoff cookies to “ensure the best combination.”However, the freshly brewed partnership with Stumptown means that Alaska is ending its decade-long partnership with fellow Seattle-based coffee company, Starbucks. Other regional companies served on Alaska include Tillamook cheeses, Salt & Straw ice cream and Straightaway canned cocktails.

Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, D-Ore., was briefly hospitalized Friday night after she and her husband were hit by a car in Portland, according to her spokesperson. Natalie Crofts, Bonamici's communications director, said in a statement shared to Twitter that the incident occurred as the lawmaker and her husband, Michael Simon, were walking across a street after leaving an event. A woman turned into Bonamici and her husband "at low speed and knocked them down," according to Portland police. Bonamici was treated at a hospital for a concussion and laceration to her head while Simon was treated for minor injuries, Crofts said. The lawmaker is a leader on the Education and Labor Committee and chair of the Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Human services.
