CNN —The FBI has returned a trove of looted Japanese art to its country of origin after a family found a stash of artifacts in their late father’s Massachusetts attic. They looked old and valuable,” Special Agent Geoffrey J. Kelly, art crime coordinator for FBI Boston and a member of the FBI Art Crime Team, said in a statement. A typewritten letter found alongside the artifacts in Massachusetts helped confirm they were looted during the last days of World War II, the FBI added. “When taken together, they really represent a substantial piece of Okinawan history,” Kelly said of the artifacts. The artifacts were returned to Okinawa last week, the FBI said, but noted that several Okinawan objects are still missing and are listed in the National Stolen Art File.

Crude oil drips from a valve at an oil well operated by Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA in Morichal July 28, 2011. Independent refiners, known as teapots, account for a fifth of China's oil purchases, and more than half of its asphalt production. PetroChina, PDVSA and the Venezuelan oil ministry did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Before the U.S. imposed sanctions in 2019, subsidiary PetroChina Fuel Oil Co was the key seller of Venezuelan oil to independent refiners. Independent refiners like Venezuelan heavy crude for its high yield of road-paving material asphalt at about 60%, versus around 45% for Iranian oil.

Here are key facts on Iran's oil trade with China:HOW MUCH IRANIAN OIL IS CHINA BUYING? HOW DOES IRANIAN OIL ENTER CHINA? Almost all Iranian oil entering China is branded as originating from Malaysia or other Middle Eastern countries. China regulates crude oil imports by issuing quotas. Giant state refiners Sinopec and PetroChina were once key Iranian oil clients, with investments in oilfields in the country.

Oil and gas tanks are seen at an oil warehouse at a port in Zhuhai, China October 22, 2018. Reuters' analysis of China's savings on oil purchases from the three sanctioned countries compares what Chinese importers would have paid by purchasing similar grades from non-sanctioned producers. For imports of Venezuelan oil, mostly heavy grade Merey, China saved an average of $10 a barrel versus comparable Colombian Castilla crude, the calculations based on the trader data showed. With January-September inflows of Venezuelan oil at around 430,000 bpd, according to the average of the Vortexa and Kpler data, China's savings from buying Venezuelan oil was $1.17 billion. TEAPOT MARGINSWith state refiners Sinopec and PetroChina refraining entirely from buying Iranian and Venezuelan crude, teapots have feasted on discounted oil from the two suppliers.

As fate would have it, he had quit his job three days before the earthquake to be closer to his family. So he was there on Friday night, when a big family dinner was held in his childhood home, which he and his father had built. Two relatives had helped her out, including her uncle Lahcen, one of the few residents who, drawn by calls for help, dismissed the aftershocks to venture back into the wreckage. He saved eight neighbors, and collected some blankets for his family so they wouldn’t freeze in the cold nights. They have been using it to make tea, which they offer to visitors along with fruit on a rare unbroken plate.

Qingdao and Lanshan are two of the top five biggest Chinese oil importing ports, according to data from Kpler. Shandong is home to numerous independent refineries known as teapots that account for up to one-fifth of China's processing capacity. Port authorities could detain ships for days to rectify any issues, prompting shippers to divert cargoes to other Chinese ports, the sources said. Almost all tankers hauling crude to Qingdao for independent refiners are more than 10 years old, said Vortexa analyst Emma Li. In April, tankers calling at Shandong ports experienced delays after customs authorities stepped up checks on diluted bitumen cargoes.

And my finished product. The teapots are at a 4 o'clock angle because the story goes that when the Duchess of Bedford "invented" afternoon tea in the 19th century, that's the time it was always served. It also just looks better. Pete Syme/Insider
SummarySummary Companies Hengli, Shenghong join Russian oil purchasesChina's April Russian oil imports likely to exceed March recordTeapots turn to cheaper Iranian oil, diluted bitumenSINGAPORE, April 21 (Reuters) - Chinese state oil giants and major private refiners are sweeping up more Russian crude, supporting prices and forcing smaller independents to seek out cheap alternatives such as Iranian oil, according to trade sources and shipping data. Shenghong imported a Urals crude cargo of about 720,000 barrels in March and 1 million barrels in April, Kpler showed. China's overall Russian crude imports, including pipeline and ships, rose to a record 9.61 million tonnes, or 2.26 million barrels per day (bpd) in March, customs data showed on Friday. TEAPOTSSmaller Chinese independent refineries, known as teapots, snapped up almost all of the ESPO supplies between November and January when others steered clear of Russian oil around the start of the European Union ban on Dec. 5. With the return of big buyers, price-sensitive teapots are looking for alternatives such as Russian Arctic grades, Iranian and Venezuelan oil.
A lot has changed since then, and today, the best cocktail bars are instead concentrated in Taipei’s financial district. These bars embrace the flavors of locally abundant flowers and fruits like roselle, guava and white ginger lily, which they infuse in syrups and liquors. For a sleek lounge experience, try Fridge Bar (cocktails from 380 Taiwan dollars), a cocktail lounge hidden behind a steel door in a sandwich shop. For a bit more novelty, consider Placebo , whose decor is reminiscent of an old Chinese medicine shop and where drinks (around 400 Taiwan dollars) may be served out of antique-looking teapots. Both bars encourage going off-menu; feel free to request a flavor profile (sour, sweet, herbaceous, spicy) or a quirky ingredient (basil, sesame oil, chile pepper) and let the bartender surprise you.
STOKE-ON-TRENT, England, March 16 (Reuters) - British pottery makers are continuing a tradition going back centuries by producing tens of thousands of commemorative mugs, plates and teapots to mark the upcoming coronation of King Charles. Charles will be the first British monarch to be crowned for seven decades following the record-breaking reign of his mother Queen Elizabeth. Workers at the Emma Bridgewater ceramics factory in Stoke-on-Trent, a city in central England famed for its pottery, are already busy producing swathes of handmade and decorated ceramics for the occasion. It follows a tradition of producing pottery to mark notable royal occasions such as births, weddings and anniversaries which goes back hundreds of years, to the time of the current monarch's namesake and predecessor Charles II. Charles himself visited the factory back in 2010, while his daughter-in-law Kate, the Princess of Wales, toured it five years later.

Arctic crude exports to India have steadily increased since May, with a record 6.67 million barrels loaded in November and 4.1 million barrels in December, Refinitiv data showed. At least three oil tankers that loaded Arctic crude in Murmansk port are now heading to China, Refinitiv data showed. Refinitiv listed the grades carried by these ships as Arco crude although one Chinese trader said there could be Varandey crude onboard. China, Russia's top oil buyer, has not agreed to the price cap. The light sweet crude is favoured by Chinese refiners due to their proximity and the oil's high middle-distillates yield. At current Brent levels, the $6 discount implies a price of $68 a barrel including freight and insurance costs. "They (independent plants) don't really care about the price cap. With the price cap in place, China, India and Turkey could have more bargaining power, the analysts added.
Chinese oil refiners have bought Russian oil cargoes at steeper discounts than just weeks ago, according to Bloomberg. Price cap talks remain underway but the deadline is meant to be December 5. The purchases come ahead of the December 5 start date for a Russian oil price cap as well as the European Union's ban on seaborne Russian crude imports. The Treasury Department has said that ships with Russian crude loaded before December 5 and unloaded at their destination before January 19 wouldn't be subject to the price cap. Meanwhile, talks among EU nations on the exact level of the price cap are ongoing.
