☆ Chevron’s $53 Billion Oil Deal Is Backed by Hess Shareholders

A large oil industry deal advanced on Tuesday after shareholders of Hess approved a proposed sale of the company to Chevron for $53 billion. Control over one of the most prized oil assets, off the shores of Guyana, is at stake in the deal, which still faces significant hurdles. Exxon is contesting Chevron’s acquisition of Hess by arguing that Hess can’t sell itself without allowing Exxon to buy its stake in the Guyana project. Chevron and Hess have said Exxon’s interpretation of the terms of Exxon and Hess’s partnership is incorrect. But Hess prevailed at its shareholders’ meeting on Tuesday in convincing a majority that the deal was in their best interest.

New York CNN —Wendy’s is sweetening its breakfast lineup with a new treat that comes from an unusual place: Another fast food chain. Also, most Cinnabon locations haven’t yet opened for the day when Wendy’s sells breakfast, which ends at 10:30 am. Perhaps Wendy’s adding cinnamon pull-aparts might entice some dissatisfied customers of McDonald’s, which last year scrapped its McCafé bakery lineup that also included a cinnamon roll. The “Cinnabon Pull-Aparts” are made from sweetened dough that’s dunked in a glaze then baked with cinnamon, brown butter and sugar. The chain previously predicted that breakfast would make 10% of its sales, with figures reaching 8.5% in 2021 before Wendy’s stopped reporting individual sales for the morning menu.

The new owner, Rubenstein, is a Baltimore native and co-founder of The Carlyle Group, a Washington, DC-based private equity giant. If the sale is approved, Rubenstein will become the controlling partner in the ownership group, the key decision-maker. After the 94-year-old Angelos dies, the Rubenstein group will own all 100% of the club. The Orioles’ $1.7 billion valuation is nearly triple what the team was worth in 2014, according to Forbes.

Walmart said it hasn't made any changes to store managers' pay structure in more than a decade. U.S. managers of the sprawling supercenters, which run about 180,000 square feet, will receive $20,000 in stock grants. Walmart said the stock grants will vest over a three-year period, with ownership for one-twelfth of the grant total coming every quarter. The new starting annual base salary for U.S. store managers will range from $90,000 to $170,000. That means that the average base pay for store leaders will go to $128,000 from $117,000, according to Cedric Clark, executive vice president of store operations at Walmart’s U.S. division.

Banks now must sacrifice profit to keep customers who are struggling to make repayments on time. Cash profit for the year ended June 30 rose 6% to A$10.16 billion, slightly ahead of analyst forecasts, but CBA put aside $A1.47 billion more in provisions due to "ongoing cost of living pressures and rising interest rates". CBA stopped offering cash payments for mortgage refinancings to lure new borrowers in June, which CEO Matt Comyn said had "weighed on our market share". CBA's mortgage book grew in line with the total market in 2023. The number of borrowers struggling to repay loans, while rising, remained below pre-pandemic levels "but these figures will rise", Comyn said.

Bread raised the annual percentage yield on its 1-year certificate of deposit to 5.35%, an increase of 10 basis points. That bump higher makes it the 1-year CD with the highest yield among banks under Stephens' coverage, according to a Monday report from the firm. Consider that a 2-year CD at Bread has an APY of 5%, while a 5-year CD yields 4.25%. "The past two weeks have been relatively quiet for online bank rate moves, and we wonder if this is holiday-related or if the online bank demand for deposits has slowed," said Vincent Caintic, an analyst at Stephens. He added that another driver behind the deceleration in deposit rate increases could be a slowdown of loan growth among online banks.

There are positive short-term catalysts for our industrial holdings including the U.S. government's commitment to infrastructure spending, global decarbonization initiatives, and industrial automation. The company hopes convenient perks like curbside returns will boost customer loyalty and jolt sales. Neither company would quantify the use of curbside pickup or returns, but Walmart said it has seen nearly double the volume of customers using curbside returns from its launch across the chain last fall compared with this month. At Target's investor day in late February, Citibank analyst Paul Lejuez asked if the retailer would ultimately miss out on purchases by adding curbside returns. He said allowing curbside returns also helps the retailer get unwanted items back on the sales floor faster and lowers the cost of mail-in returns. For Target, curbside returns could serve as a differentiator and a complement to the merchandise mix it sells, Hoyler said.
