Winning in China's electric car market is no longer just about having the cheapest price. Despite new U.S. tariffs , the Chinese electric car industry is already moving into a new phase of competition no longer centered on sticker prices alone, many in the industry say. Hong Kong-listed Fuyao, a major supplier of glass for cars, is one of JPMorgan's top picks to take advantage of China's growing electric car market. The Shenzhen-listed Chinese battery giant, Contemporary Amperex Technology , is one of JPMorgan's top Chinese electric car supply chain plays. Last week, Chinese electric car company Nio released a new car in a lower-priced range of just over 200,000 yuan.

And yet bosses of major carriers are already talking about building something called "5.5G," or "5G Advanced." Carriers in China, South Korea, the United States, and Europe, properly got underway with launches of 5G networks in 2019. 5G Advanced, or the name for the next stage of 5G, is the next evolution of mobile networks. 5G advanced — 5G standalone, that's absolutely fine. Telcos haven't yet revealed how much more a 5G Advanced data plan will cost compared with 5G.

The day after Thanksgiving historically has marked the start of the holiday shopping rush. This matters because the November-December gift-buying months combined can account for about 20%, or a sizable chunk, of retailers’ sales for the full year. Retailers this year trotted out early Black Friday-like deals weeks ahead of the annual day-after-Thanksgiving shopping bonanza. “It is a lengthier shopping season because retailers were rolling out early Black Friday deals as early as October. Walmart’s first round of early Black Friday deals included a 50-inch TV house brand for $148.

The combination of 5G and IoT devices can be a boon for businesses. Here, experts advise how to tamp down the risks of integrating IoT devices into your 5G network. "IoT devices are appealing targets for cybercriminals because of their always-on nature," Steve Jacques, a consulting engineer at Juniper Networks, told Insider. IoT devices can integrate with the network — unless you segment them offAnother issue is that IoT devices integrate deeply with networks, passing data to and from your core network. Because of their consumer focus, many IoT devices are not designed with security in mind and may contain vulnerabilities or weak default configurations.

Two experts in 5G technology and cybersecurity, Rahim Tafazolli and Alan Woodward of the University of Surrey, spoke to Insider about the key steps organizations should take to develop a secure 5G network. Understand your needs and hire the right staffThe first thing to check is whether you need a 5G network, and if so, how you should scope it. Evaluate public versus private 5G optionsIf you don't have the full complement of telecom skills required, it's much safer to rely on those who do to provide you with a secure 5G network. A public 5G network slice from a mobile operator may, in that instance, be better than a private, on-premise 5G network that you have to maintain in-house. Implement monitoring and automationOperating a 5G network requires extensive telecom expertise that many enterprises lack.

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Swedish media say the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences may have announced the winners of this year’s Nobel Prize in chemistry prematurely. Public broadcaster SVT said the academy sent a press release by mistake early Wednesday that contained the names of the winners. The press release said the prize went to three U.S.-based scientists for the “discovery and synthesis of quantum dots,” according to SVT. On Monday, Hungarian-American Katalin Karikó and American Drew Weissman won the Nobel Prize in medicine for discoveries that enabled the creation of mRNA vaccines against COVID-19. The chemistry prize means Nobel season has reached its halfway stage.

Huawei used its own chip designs for its new 5G smartphone, The FT reported. It's a sign that the Chinese firm can implement its own designs in the same way as Apple. Huawei's phone led to panic in Washington amid fears over the effectiveness of China's export controls. The findings suggest a significant step forward in technical capabilities for Huawei as it begins to implement its own chip designs in smartphones in much the same way Western smartphone makers such as Apple have done for years. There are questions, though, about how successful Huawei would be in scaling the production of smartphones with advanced chips.

The iPhone 15 will be a tough sell in China. And China's homegrown rival Huawei has a new, superfast phone out, the Mate 60. China is Apple's second-biggest single market by sales outside the US, and its third-biggest region behind the US and Europe. Another important metric: China grew faster by revenue than Europe, implying continued prospects for growth for Apple beyond saturated Western markets. The advanced chip inside the new Mate 60 was made by Chinese company SMIC, according to a teardown by Bloomberg.

New York CNN —Apple’s fall product launch next month is all but certain to include a new iPhone, and rumors say it could include faster charging. According to 9to5Mac, a tech blog with a solid track record on Apple rumors, the next iPhone will switch from Apple’s Lightning charging port to the more widespread USB-C and at least some models will support faster charging speeds. The iPhone 15 could be compatible with a 35-watt charger, allowing the device to charge faster. Apple recommends iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max users avoid charging with any wired chargers over 27 watts, and iPhone 14 users limit their chargers to 20 watts. In March, 9to5Mac performed a battery tests on the S23 Ultra and the iPhone 14 Pro Max and found the latter won out.

June 3 (Reuters) - At least 233 people were killed and 900 were injured when two passenger trains collided in India's Odisha state, a government official said on Saturday, making the rail accident the country's deadliest in more than a decade. The death toll from Friday's crash is expected to rise, the state's Chief Secretary Pradeep Jena said on Twitter. Early on Saturday morning, Reuters video footage showed police officials moving bodies covered in white cloths off the railway tracks. Utqiagvik, ALASKA—Nestled between the whalebone-marked graves of long-dead whaling captains, an arctic fox den and a snow-covered beach, a series of satellite dishes point at the horizon from this northern Alaskan town. Far from the superfast fiber-optic cables that provide internet connectivity to other parts of the world, Arctic towns like Utqiagvik have typically relied on more limited, less reliable satellite connections. It means that students can rarely stream educational videos, hospitals spend hours uploading medical scans and scientists sometimes struggle to simply open emails.
"We have not completed the deployment of 5G yet," Ha Min Yong, chief development officer of SK Telecom , told CNBC last week. However, after hundreds of billions of dollars of investment into 5G networks, carriers have struggled to see the return. I don't see any use cases today that we can't do with 5G or its immediate evolutions," Watson told CNBC last week. Many of the current 5G networks are built on top of equipment and technology from 4G. There will also be more software that powers 5G networks helping with efficiency such as the management of data traffic.
Retailers this holiday season are focusing on delivering packages to customers on specific dates, rather than competing on speed of delivery. With inflation-conscious consumers now dialing back their online shopping, many retailers are focused on restraining the high costs of fulfillment and last-mile delivery. In 2019, the e-commerce giant also gave its Prime members the option to pick a specific delivery date. The feature refines the retailer’s previous three- to five-day shipping window, said Shivi Shankaran, the company’s chief operating officer. “Sometimes they want it really, really fast, or they want it really, really scheduled,” Mr. Gorlin said.
