In “Civil War,” tanks trample democracy. But the messages they send may be more dangerous than the violence depicted onscreen: The collapse of democracy is inevitable. In the film, Humphrey Bogart plays Rick, the cynical owner of a Moroccan nightclub at the onset of World War II. John Springer Collection/Corbis Historical/Getty ImagesOther World War II-era films like “Don’t be a Sucker,” which emphasized racial and religious tolerance in America, emphasized the same message. The box office success of “Civil War” ensures, though, that more “American carnage” stories are likely headed our way .

For many it felt like a soothing balm, underscoring the kind of communal experience people were missing as the still-new coronavirus pandemic shuttered theaters. Even allowing for that, the operatic heights achieved by “Endgame,” which grossed nearly $2.8 billion worldwide, would have been difficult to replicate. Such a concept would have sounded particularly foreign in the run-up to “Endgame,” when Marvel and its leader, Kevin Feige, appeared to possess a Midas touch. Venezuelan filmgoers watch the first screening in Venezuela of Marvel Studios' "Avengers: Endgame" at a cinema in Caracas on April 26, 2019. This is the Tesla Musk is selling to Wall Street, and he's telling anyone with doubts to stay away. "If somebody doesn't believe Tesla's going to solve autonomy, I think they should not be an investor in the company," Musk said on the earnings call. In a shareholder deck that Tesla published before the call, the company featured a "preview of ride-hailing in the Tesla app." At an AI Day in August 2021, Musk said Tesla would build a humanoid robot, now known as Optimus. First it was the streamers: the seismic arrival of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV+ and the rest, offering television’s previously captive viewers the chance to watch seemingly whatever they wanted, whenever they wanted. Then TikTok joined YouTube in conclusively shattering what was once a unified small-screen audience into a billion individual fragments. On both sides of the Atlantic, ratings plummeted. Viewers drifted away. Now, in Britain, a group of bodybuilders, personal trainers and sundry gym rats have stepped unto the breach.

For decades, America has followed Oprah through every major weight loss trend, and this was no exception. One might also ask what it means for the nation’s preeminent Black history museum to be economically tethered to a weight loss company.

Brie Larson and Iman Vellani Photo: Marvel Studios‘The Marvels” arrives amid a rumbling storm of negative feeling—about both its likely performance at the box office and the continuing success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a whole. The new film certainly suggests as much, and leaves one hoping that superheroes might at long last leave us mortals to fend for ourselves. The main hero here is Carol Danvers , aka Captain Marvel, once again played by Brie Larson . She is joined by Monica Rambeau ( Teyonah Parris , better served in “If Beale Street Could Talk”) and Kamala Khan , aka Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani, with the eager, lightly amusing energy of a Disney Channel star). Together, the trio becomes the Marvels, a supergroup formed by cosmic accident after their powers become entangled and they find themselves switching places across space, possibly due to some holes opened up in the universe by the rotely vengeful evildoer Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton).

NEW YORK (AP) — Nia DaCosta, director of the upcoming “The Marvels,” has a diagnosis for the recent struggles of superhero movies. It’s the first Marvel movie to feature not just all-female leads but a female villain (Zawe Ashton plays Dar-Benn), as well. While originally conceived as a post-“Endgame” follow-up to “Captain Marvel,” Marvel chief Kevin Feige was drawn to the chance to unite Captain Marvel with Rambeau from “WandaVision” and Ms. Marvel of her standalone Disney+ series. After making “Candyman,” a Marvel movie was, DaCosta says, “definitely not in my near future.” But it also wasn’t entirely off her radar. When DaCosta was tapped to helm “The Marvels,” Feige encouraged her to reach out to other Marvel movie directors for advice.

A professional actor since his teens, Perry had appeared in more than a dozen sitcoms before landing “Friends” in 1994. Mostly it advertised Perry and his anxious, reckless charm. Even among the irrepressible talents of his co-stars, Perry stood out, for a rubbery, heedless way with physical comedy and a split-second timing that most stopwatches would envy. He had both an absolute commitment to what a line required and a way of gently ironizing that line. Perry was in on those same jokes.

It requires cutting out the far western region from apparel supply chains. Ten of the 37 garments collected by Customs and Border Protection in May returned as “consistent” with Xinjiang, the documents show. "The amount of Xinjiang cotton entering the U.S. should be zero," she said. Many retailers have also turned to isotopic testing in a bid to keep their supply chain free of cotton with links to forced labor. Officials said isotopic testing alone is not enough to clear shipments detained at U.S. ports for suspected links to Xinjiang.

So are we surprised when Sebastian, of all people, turns up as a rider on Abby’s trip? She is (more or less) perfect all along (or at least as close to perfect as any of us are). No real spoilers here, I hope, but one of the riders turns out to be a pregnant teenager and, because of post-Roe obstructions, it takes a village to help her realize her choices. That’s probably because where I live, all the riders whiz past scoldingly, as if every day is the Tour de France. BPA is an endocrine disruptor, meaning that it mimics or interferes with the body’s hormones. It governs weight management and your energy levels, not to mention your skin’s appearance and your ability to fend off illness. Others have tried to argue that some of the chemicals in clothing fell within the legal and regulatory limits. The signs that something is very, very wrong with our reproductive health and endocrine systems are myriad. After all, you might be undoing the benefits of hitting the gym every day when your workout clothes could be doing so much damage to your health.

The multi-trillion dollar fashion industry contributes significant greenhouse gas emissions, between 8% to 10% of total global emissions, according to the United Nations. With the majority of textiles in the fashion industry blended, it is harder to recycle one fiber without harming another. Spinnova partnered with the world's largest pulp and paper company this year, Suzano, to turn wood and waste into recycled textile fiber. Textile waste, by some measures, is a bigger issue than plastics waste, and it has a similar problem. Late last year it worked on a limited collection with fast fashion clothing giant — and consumer consumption flashpoint — Zara, using its recycled textile waste material.

At More Skate Parks, an ‘Aggressive’ Takeover

On a May afternoon at a Venice Beach skate park, the drooping sun cast an amber glow on Kayla Dizon as she shot her way across the pavement on a pair of in-line skates. Ms. Dizon, 25, had not come to cruise leisurely along the Pacific Coast like many spandex- and swimsuit-clad skaters do. Wearing a T-shirt and cutoff shorts that revealed a massive purple-yellow bruise on her leg, Ms. Dizon instead was scraping her skates’ wheels on the edges of the park’s sinuous curves and sharp dips as her dyed-red hair thrashed in the air. Like many people, Ms. Dizon took up in-line skating — often called Rollerblading, thanks to a popular brand of skates — during the pandemic, after a friend gave her a pair of skates. It was that same friend, she said, who coaxed her into trying what’s known as aggressive or in-line street skating, a style heavy on tricks and stunts like grinding curbs, skidding on railings and spinning along half-pipes.

The newly tested brands and their products include leggings from Athleta, Champion, Kohl’s, Nike and Patagonia, sports bras from Sweaty Betty, athletic shirts from Fabletics and shorts from Adidas, Champion and Nike. The group had also tested athletic shirts in October from brands that included The North Face, Brooks, Mizuno, Athleta, New Balance, and Reebok and found similar results. Athleta, Nike, Reebok, The North Face and Victoria’s Secret (which owns PINK) did not provide a comment to CNN at the time. BPA (Bisphenol A) is found in a large number of everyday products, from water bottles and canned foods to toys and flooring. Sports bras and athletic shirts are worn for hours at a time, and you are meant to sweat in them, so it is concerning to be finding such high levels of BPA in our clothing,” Allan Sugerman said.
This Skort Is the Best Summer Clothing Item I’ve Ever Purchased

By Madeline DiamondDressing for the summertime (especially in hot and sticky New York City) has always been a pain for me. For the past two summers, I’ve lived in the brand’s Sport Skort. Instead, I’m full of confidence when I wear it, thanks to the security of built-in bike shorts that have a compressive but not restrictive fit. Plus, the summer heat was no match for the skort’s soft, stretchy blend of RPET (a fabric sourced from recycled plastic bottles) and spandex. Up close, its texture looks like a typical pair of leggings, yet the fabric’s matte finish makes it blend nicely with dressier clothing.
And while electric cars get all the hype, a game-changing solution to getting around without warming the planet has flourished right under our noses. Electric cars are important, too, but they're expensive and far off for a lot of drivers, MacArthur said. The most popular electric vehicles in the US don't have a Tesla logoWhile electric cars get all the attention, e-bikes have for years been the best-selling electric vehicles in the US. Last year, Americans bought just over 800,000 electric cars, according to Kelley Blue Book, a record. Since e-bikes are much cheaper than electric cars, "you can get them into the hands of consumers faster," she said.
Talent agency Endeavor (EDR.N), which owns the mixed martial arts business, will tag-team with Vince McMahon’s WWE in deal valued at some $21 billion. The merger unveiled on Monday creates a new publicly traded company 51% owned by Endeavor and 49% by WWE shareholders. On paper, the WWE enterprise gets the sweeter valuation, at around 24 times last year’s EBITDA, whereas UFC is pegged at 19 times. Instead, in the grand tradition of wrestling, McMahon and Endeavor boss Ari Emanuel are trying to appeal to shareholders with a more unconventional thriller. Under terms of the deal, WWE is being valued on the basis of $106 per share, implying an enterprise valuation of $9.3 billion, according to the companies.
