It’s Shark Season. How Worried Should You Be?
  + stars: | 2024-07-26 | by ( Erik Vance | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +19 min
California has very few shark attacks — just two recorded in 2023, fewer than New York and the Carolinas. The eastern coast from Virginia to New York doesn’t see many shark attacks, despite having many popular beach towns. Long Island in New York is, roughly speaking, the northern border of the bull and tiger shark ranges. Tiger Shark A 3D illustration of a Tiger Shark. Kentucky managed to rack up 12 shark attacks in 2006 after the aquarium in Newport opened a shark petting exhibit.

Patricia and Ray Johnson arrived at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Maui on February 23, 2022, marking the couple's sixth visit to Hawaii. Related storiesPatricia Johnson told ABC 7 Eyewitness News that Ray had kept his head above water before appearing disorientated. According to the lawsuit, Ray Johnson eventually lost consciousness before reaching the shore. He added: "If even one life is saved by this message, then Ray Johnson will not have died in vain."

WASHINGTON (AP) — Scientists have mapped the largest coral reef deep in the ocean, stretching hundreds of miles off the U.S. Atlantic coast. The largest yet known deep coral reef "has been right under our noses, waiting to be discovered,” said Derek Sowers, an oceanographer at the nonprofit Ocean Exploration Trust. Unlike tropical coral reefs, where photosynthesis is important for growth, coral this far down must filter food particles out of the water for energy. Deep coral reefs provide habitat for sharks, swordfish, sea stars, octopus, shrimp and many other kinds of fish, the scientists said. The world's largest tropical coral reef system, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, stretches for about 1,430 miles (2,301 kilometers).

Keani Rawlins-Fernandez grew up in Hawaii and has seen tourism increase over the years. Now a local council member, Rawlins-Fernandez says locals can feel overrun by tourists. Many economic, social, and financial issues arise with unrestricted tourism, and I don't know how Hawaii will continue to cope with these numbers. I grew up in Molokai, the only island of Hawaii where the economy is not reliant on tourism. My island in Molokai fared better because the model is to cater to local businesses and local patrons instead.

Secret spots on Croatia’s famous Dalmatian coast
  + stars: | 2023-10-03 | by ( Mary Novakovich | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
CNN —To many, the southern Dalmatian coast is Croatia. The Adriatic coast is undeniably beautiful, with the forbidding Dinaric Alps as a dramatic backdrop to the heavily indented coastline and dozens of islands scattered about. Until 2022, reaching it from the north meant crossing into Bosnia, whose 12.4 miles of coastline sits below the Neretva delta, before giving way once more to Croatia’s southern Dalmatian coast. Elaphiti islandsWander along Dubrovnik’s old port and in seconds you’ll be offered a day trip to the Elaphiti islands, north of the city. Cavtat, about 15 miles south of Dubrovnik, has been steadily growing in popularity as an alternative to the city.

Defeated by strong current where the Ichetucknee flows through a culvert under Highway 27, we let ourselves float downstream. Nearing the junction with the Santa Fe River we could hear music; a crowd of boats was anchored along the forest edge. Around Grassy Hole Spring, where the river threads through islands of vegetation, we saw scattered canoes, each with a band of snorkelers. Close to two miles after starting, we passed the outflow from Blue Hole Spring, the largest spring in the group that feeds the Ichetucknee, and paddling became less strenuous. We reached North End launch, where the river begins with water from its headspring.

Full-face snorkel masks have been a subject of debate amongst the scientific community. The fit, healthy 59-year-old had snorkeled before, but this was the first time she'd used a full-face mask. While it may sound like a freak accident, Standley's narrow escape may indicate a more serious issue involving full-face snorkel masks. British woman Angela Kearn, 63, died while snorkeling in the Red Sea in Egypt after she used a full-face mask from a Decathlon sporting goods store. But Caroline Topping, the coroner, also wrote: "The use of a full face snorkel mask contributed to the death in two ways."
