But Riley alertly backed up the play and zipped a throw to first that completed the double play. Unbelievable.”So did Riley, backing up on a play that he never could've expected to be involved in. Wheeler fanned the side in each of the first two innings, with the Braves making contact on just 12 of 26 strikes. D'Arnaud made Wheeler pay on his 92nd — and final — pitch, but the Phillies manager had no regrets.

CNN —Jim Abbott was used to dealing with uncomfortable social situations; in some ways, they were all he’d ever known. Abbott was about to pull off a no-hitter, one of the rarest feats in Major League Baseball. Baseball insiders will tell you that nobody ever sees a no-hitter coming, and that was certainly true for Jim Abbott. “I had some pretty serious anxiety about that game,” Abbott said in 2013. Sometimes, a new Hall of Fame class fits neatly together in baseball history. Jimmie Foxx and Mel Ott, 500-homer sluggers in the shadow of Babe Ruth, went in together in 1951. Johnny Bench and Carl Yastrzemski, one-city institutions who met in a sublime World Series, took their turn in 1989. Both reached the World Series twice, winning once. More than anything else, the pairing of McGriff and Rolen is a powerful reflection of the changing standards for baseball’s highest honor.
