CNN —Dramatic campus protests are injecting an inflammatory new element into an election year that is already threatening to stretch national unity to a breaking point.
Republicans smell an openingGOP Rep. Elise Stefanik is a driver of the deepening political backlash against campus protests.
Republicans are also using the drama of student protests as a shield and to downplay their presumptive nominee’s own extremism.
The unrest is so far not comparable since there’s no student mob trying to destroy American democracy.
And they are not yet in the same league as the civil rights and Vietnam War protests in the 1960s and 1970s.
