I think Jensen deserves one day a year when he can trace out a vision without a per share attached to it. Sure, plenty of people in line Saturday would, correctly I think, say to "own it, don't trade it." Sure, I was sweating "own it, don't trade it." And, can you imagine if you owned but didn't trade Intel from 1990 to 2000? (Don't tell current Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, who thinks it is still alive.)

CNN —One of the UK’s oldest and most important cathedrals is hosting two ’90s-themed silent discos, a move that has proved popular with revelers but sparked a backlash from some Christians, who say a disco has no place in a cathedral. Bathed in colorful illuminations, clutching glow sticks and wearing headphones that blasted ’90s music directly into their ears, hundreds of people danced well into the night on Thursday in Canterbury Cathedral, Kent. Founded in 597 CE, the cathedral is the seat of Britain’s most senior bishop, the Archbishop of Canterbury, the head of the worldwide Anglican communion. Chapter of Canterbury CathedralThe cathedral enthused on social media about the “fantastic atmosphere” created, and another disco is scheduled for Friday evening. The discos’ organizer, Silent Discos in Incredible Places, has hosted similar events in several other British cathedrals already, saying on Instagram that it works with more than half of the country’s major cathedrals.

As a local, I ought to hate anything in New York that draws a crowd. In theory, this includes the tree at Rockefeller Center. I don’t hate the tree, though. The secret to surviving in crowded spaces is to know where you are going. This gives you a huge advantage over those around you, most of whom are helplessly drifting in the tide, like jellyfish.

The storied and fragile lagoon city is not alone in its struggle to manage an onslaught of tourists in the low-cost flight era. But the stakes are particularly high this week as the UNESCO World Heritage Committee decides whether to add Venice to its list of endangered world sites. Critics charge that the tax was rushed through to impress the UNESCO committee that the city is acting to curb mass tourism. The recommendation to downgrade Venice cites not only management of mass tourism, but also the impact of climate change. Venice is one of six sites, including two in war-ravaged Ukraine, that the committee may officially declare to be in danger.

Spain roasts as summer's third heatwave peaks

[1/3] People queue in the sun outside Almudena Cathedral as they wait to enter the Royal Palace during the third heatwave of the summer in Madrid, Spain, August 8, 2023. The mercury could also rise to 40 C in the Basque Country in northeastern Spain, an area less accustomed to such high temperatures, the state weather agency AEMET said. Temperatures in some areas in the southern half of Spain remained above 27 C on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, AEMET spokesperson Ruben del Campo said. As Spain suffocates under high temperatures, ice on its mountains is melting. The melting sped up in 2021 and 2022, which were particularly warm years in Spain.

At least 22 people, many of them children, were killed after a double-decker tourist boat capsized in the southern Indian state of Kerala on Sunday evening. Rescuers had found eight people with injuries by the next morning, with four of them in critical condition. The boat was carrying more than 40 sightseers, according to survivors, when it capsized at around 7 p.m.“The boat was overcrowded,” said Abdul Nazar, a local police officer. Local media reported that the vessel also lacked a required safety certificate, and was not permitted to operate that late in the day. Five passengers swam ashore and were being treated at a nearby hospital, according to V. Abdurahiman, a local legislator, who is overseeing the rescue operation.
"I can’t believe that this belonged to Saddam and now I'm the one moving around it," he said. But it was targeted by U.S.-led forces, and later capsized in the Shatt al-Arab waterway as it fell into decay. In the turmoil that followed Saddam’s downfall, the yacht was stripped bare and looted, with everything from its chandeliers and furniture to parts of its metal structure removed. One of three yachts owned by Saddam, the yacht could accommodate up to 200 guests and was equipped with a helipad. U.S. officials estimated in 2003 that Saddam and his family may have amassed up to $40 billion in ill-gotten funds.
CUMBERLAND, MD., is not what most people would call a bucket-list destination. Set on the banks of the Potomac River, it offers pleasant-enough diversions. A quaint, pedestrian-only strip of local businesses. A vintage steam engine that shuttles sightseers into the Allegheny Mountains. Still, when I think ahead to when I’ll kick the proverbial bucket and the travel experiences I’ll remember most, it is a scorching summer afternoon in a mostly unremarkable town that rises to the surface—not the first time I glimpsed the magnificent mausoleum in Agra.
On Monday, Fox's right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson used some of the security videos, showing protesters walking through the Capitol, to argue that they were merely "sightseers". In a Senate speech, Schumer condemned the broadcast and urged the cable network to cancel any follow-up segment. He added that McCarthy was "every bit as culpable as Mr. Carlson" for providing the footage. "To say January 6 was not violent, is a lie, a lie, pure and simple," Schumer said. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell declined to comment on McCarthy's decision to supply the videos.
WASHINGTON, March 8 (Reuters) - The White House said on Wednesday that Fox News anchor Tucker Carlson "is not credible," after the right-wing commentator showed footage from the Jan. 6, 2021, attacks on the U.S. Capitol that portrayed rioters as peaceful. "We also agree with what Fox News's own attorneys and executives have now repeatedly stressed in multiple courts of law: that Tucker Carlson is not credible," Bates added. The Biden White House has tread carefully in its criticism of Fox's coverage of the 2020 election and its aftermath in the past, sometimes citing the Hatch Act that prevents administration officials from speaking about campaign-related matters. Carlson has defended his decision to run the footage, saying it was needed for transparency. Supporters of former President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, as Congress was certifying the outcome of the 2020 elections.
Some parents have found a shortcut to save money and dodge crowds on family vacations: They enjoy a break while all the other kids are stuck in class—and perhaps frame Mickey Mouse as educational. Airfare and hotel prices are high right now, particularly for popular travel dates around spring break or summer vacation. Sightseers are back in force. To circumvent the added cost and headaches, many families are opting to pull their children out of school for trips.

REUTERS/Leah MillisWASHINGTON, March 7 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday accused House of Representatives Speaker Kevin McCarthy of helping Fox News stoke conspiracy theories by providing videos that were used by the cable network to portray the Jan. 6 Capitol rioters as peaceful. On Monday, Fox's right-wing commentator Tucker Carlson used some of the security videos, showing protesters walking through the Capitol, to argue that they were merely "sightseers." In a Senate speech, Schumer condemned the broadcast and urged the cable network to cancel any follow-up segment. No such fraud has been documented and Trump, who is running for president in 2024, continues to falsely repeat the charge.
AHMEDABAD, India, Feb 20 (Reuters) - Broken corroded wires, improper welding and changes to the walking surface of a 145-year-old hanging bridge in India contributed to its collapse last year that killed 135 people, an investigation has found. "Main cable of the upstream side was found broken on one side," according to a preliminary investigation report seen by Reuters. "Out of the 49 wires of the main cable, 22 were corroded which indicates that those wires may be already broken before the incident. The Oreva Group did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment. The report blamed Oreva for unrestricted access to the bridge for people and insufficient security arrangements.
Hafnarfjarðarkaupstaður, Iceland, is a town of 30,000 souls built on a lava field, just south of the island nation’s capital city of Reykjavik. If sightseers come this way, it’s for tours of the homes of local “hidden folk”—the dwarfs and elves of the Norse fairy tales that inspired J.R.R. Tucked away in a nondescript 10,000-square-foot building there is a manufacturing facility that runs 24/7, producing parts for fish-processing machines in a way that was, even a few years ago, impossible. Elliði Hreinsson, the founder of Curio, which owns the building, says the machines he designs and makes would be difficult or in some cases impossible to produce without 3-D printing.
He didn't talk much on the drive in, just listened to call-in radio shows and then the opera, the Metropolitan Opera, brought to you by Texaco. And if you ran out of those, you might have to close on one of the most important business days leading up to Christmas. But Mr. Paul was a supplier, a decent man, and most importantly a retired Marine Corps colonel. One day Pop asked me to summon up the courage and ask Mr. Paul to show him his stock ledger. Mr. Paul, in short, was a millionaire.
"The state government has suspended Sandeepsinh Zala, chief officer of Morbi municipality in view of the bridge collapse," Pankaj Joshi, secretary to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, told Reuters. The bridge - 233 metres in length and 1.25 metres wide - was originally built in 1877 and had been closed for six months for repairs until last week. India Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who hails from the state and was its chief minister for close to 13 years, has called for a detailed and extensive inquiry into the cause of the disaster. The government in the Western Indian state, where legislative elections are due to be held next month, called off the search operation for survivors on Thursday. Local fire brigade, state and national disaster teams will be kept on standby, a government statement said.

REUTERS/Stringer/File PhotoMORBI, Nov 3 (Reuters) - India's Gujarat state on Thursday said that the search operation following the collapse of a bridge that led to the death of 135 people had been called off. Local fire brigade, state and national disaster teams will be kept on standby, a government statement said. "One person was reportedly missing since the incident, but we have a police report that says no such person is missing. And hence the decision to call off the search operation," GT Pandya, senior administrative official in Morbi told Reuters.

Rescue workers would continue their search for any unaccounted persons for a fourth day, a government control room said, though local officials said on Tuesday that only one person was believed to be missing still. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has appealed to people in his state to pray for the departed souls and their families. A senior police official told Reuters this week that about 200 people were on the bridge when it collapsed. Local municipality officials said tickets for about 400 people had been sold, although not necessarily to be on the bridge at the same time.
MORBI, India — Police in western India arrested nine people on Monday as they investigated the collapse of a newly repaired 143-year-old suspension bridge in one of the country’s worst accidents in years, officials said. The collapse Sunday evening in Gujarat state plunged hundreds of people into a river, killing at least 134. The same month, Oreva closed the bridge, which spans a wide section of the Machchu river, for repairs. Modi was the top elected official of Gujarat for 12 years before becoming India’s prime minister in 2014. A Gujarat state government election is expected in coming months and opposition parties have demanded a thorough investigation of the accident.
Local officials said about 400 tickets had been sold, although not necessarily to be on the bridge at the same time. "Then the bridge collapsed in front of our eyes," the 32-year-old construction worker said. The witnesses did not know whether the security guards had survived. Those arrested included ticketing clerks and three security guards who were on duty when the bridge collapsed, senior police official Ashok Kumar Yadav said. Reuters could not confirm whether the two guards who witnesses reported seeing at the bridge were among the three arrested.
