When it came to housing, Susan Apel and Keith Irwin thought they had planned adroitly for later life. They bought a four-bedroom house on two acres in Lebanon, N.H., 24 years ago, and “we made sure to pay off the mortgage before we retired,” said Ms. Apel, 71. Ms. Apel, a retired law professor, is having trouble climbing stairs. Mr. Irwin, 71, previously an account manager for a local business, is wearying of yard work and snow shoveling, and finding workers to do those chores instead has become difficult. “We’re seeing the writing on the wall,” Ms. Apel said.

Lil Wayne loves weed. But in 2021, Lil Wayne — whose real name Dwayne Carter — told the government that his touring company was a "drug-free" workplace. No one at the Small Business Administration appeared to question it, and the government cut a $8.9 million check to Lil Wayne's company Young Money Touring Inc. Representatives for Beach House didn't respond to a request for comment, nor did press contacts for Lil Wayne or Post Malone. COOKE CITY, Mont. They say their work has helped keep deaths from spiking despite more skiers, snowboarders and snowmobilers pushing the limits on remote mountainsides. Cooke City is thronged with tourists by the thousands in summer, when it’s a bustling gateway to Yellowstone National Park. After it snows — and here storms are often measured by the foot — snowmobilers and skiers pack the few hotels and inns. On Saturdays at a backcountry warming hut used by snowmobilers, avalanche educators give basic rescue lessons including how to use avalanche beacons — transmitters that send a signal rescuers can use to find victims.

At 2 p.m. on Friday, Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y., home to the Buffalo Bills, was covered in snow. Mounds of white powder were piled high across the stadium, obscuring signs, burying seats and blocking the tunnels that lead from the locker rooms to the field. But the Bills, set to face the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday in the second round of the National Football League playoffs, had a plan. Ethan Cuddihy, 23, a Buffalo native and a lifelong Bills fan, was more than willing. The team’s beloved quarterback, Josh Allen, had already given him so much; it was only right that Mr. Cuddihy return the favor, he said.

SBF Faces Prison, but ‘Effective Altruism’ Lives On

Journal Editorial Report: The week's best and worst from Kim Strassel, Kyle Peterson, Jason Riley and Dan Henninger. I was looking forward to the March trial and seeing the politicians who accepted the convicted fraudster’s donations squirm like worms. Beyond trying to stave off crypto regulations, he was shoveling millions to the effective-altruism movement, which continues to infiltrate governments more than most people realize. With SBF facing a long term in the big house, has effective altruism landed on the ash heap of history? Did you know proponents of the movement basically wrote the Biden administration’s recent executive order on artificial intelligence?

“Conditions right now in Orchard Park, where the game would have started moments ago,” she wrote early Sunday afternoon. Sub-zero wind chills will grip much of the country, plunging to 50 degrees below zero in Montana and the Dakotas. Other parts of the country could see temperatures drop 25 to 40 degrees below normal, from the Rockies to the Ohio Valley. Even places like Florida won’t be spared from turbulent weather, with forecasts predicting showers and thunderstorms from Monday into Tuesday. The utility said it was watching a second weather pattern that could bring high winds and freezing rain on Tuesday.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Logan Eschrich came to Buffalo to witness the snowstorm, and he stayed for the shoveling on Sunday. Once the professional storm chaser saw the Buffalo Bills invite fans to help dig out a snow-filled Highmark Stadium for their delayed playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, now scheduled for Monday, Eschrich couldn’t resist. Stadium crews were unable to keep up with the falling snow, using blowers to uncover the yard lines. How your seasonal chores count toward your fitness goals
  + stars: | 2023-10-28 | by ( Dana Santas | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
What a lot of people don’t realize is that those seasonal chores are functional exercises that can burn more calories than some traditional fitness activities. Unfortunately, too many people forget to use that mindset when doing seasonal chores. Use proper formJust as you would execute an exercise at the gym, you want to perform your seasonal chores with the same attention to proper form. Switch sidesBecause most humans have a dominant side, we tend to favor that side while doing chores. It’s important to take water breaks while doing chores and to stay hydrated after you have finished your work.

In 1889, journalist Nellie Bly set off on a trip around the world, trying to make it under 80 days. "You see a huge emphasis being placed on building ships that were ever faster than the previous generation of ships," Goodman said. Once aboard the train, Bly began to receive telegrams from her editors and well-wishers. "Sometimes it literally literally just says, 'Nelly Bly's train,'" Behn said. For Behn, what Bly and Bisland did remains incredible and deserve to be remembered as much as Verne's story.

Jayne Withers teaches classes about dining etiquette to both children and adults in Florida. I always enjoyed teaching, which is probably why I started my etiquette business after decades of working in publishing and wellness. From 2016 to this year, my husband and I ran a restaurant called Sealantro British Cafe, and I used some of the contacts from its mailing list to grow my etiquette business. That's a very common theme, and that's how I started teaching adults. I now teach courses on modern formal dining for adults and college students, dining out for children, business dining, international business etiquette, afternoon-tea etiquette, and etiquette for teenagers.

CNN —The Kristen Welker era of “Meet the Press” is off to a bleak start. Unfortunately, Welker failed spectacularly to meet the moment during her interview with Trump. Welker allowed Trump to make a number of statements wholly untethered to reality on a range of critical issues without tenacious, resolute, or meaningful pushback. It’s arguable that, at this juncture, there is really no need to interview Trump. If it is necessary to interview Trump, newsrooms need to approach the task differently than they would any other interview.

WASHINGTON — A leading House Republican voice on the national security threat posed by China said the White House's plan to restrict outbound investment in the Chinese military and defense companies falls short of addressing the real problem. The Wisconsin Republican is the chairman of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party and a leading voice in the House on the risks of U.S. investment in China. The House CCP Committee has flagged around 50 firms, including machinery, aircraft and technology firms and created a de facto blacklist. Yellen has already signaled that she intends to keep any investment restrictions "narrowly targeted" to protect U.S. national security, and insists they are not intended to weaken China's economy. "Even though these policies may have economic impacts, they are driven by straightforward national security considerations," she said in an April speech.

Worms are on the move, and people are nervous. That’s because they’re taking over territory in the Far North that’s been wormless since the last ice age. Scientists say the expansion will inevitably change northern ecosystems, with implications for the whole planet, in ways we don’t fully understand and probably can’t undo. Earthworms actively contribute to soil health by munching on decaying organic matter and pooping out nutrient-rich fertilizer. But that means worms also have the potential to upend the natural balance of ecosystems in Arctic and sub-Arctic zones.

Northern Mexico bakes as residents try to beat scorching heat

REUTERS/Victor Medina/File PhotoMEXICALI, Mexico, July 13 (Reuters) - Construction worker Brian Larreta's job is tough any day of the year, but scorching temperatures this month in northern Mexico have made it a dangerous feat. A deadly heat wave spiked temperatures across Mexico in June, but while recent weeks have brought relief to more southern regions, the country's heat-accustomed northern states have continued to bake in abnormally high temperatures. Heat waves have historically hit Mexico in April and May, according to data from the Autonomous National University of Mexico (UNAM). This year, experts said the heat wave was worsened by drought. The local government, along with religious groups, took to the streets to offer homeless people shelter, water, and rehydration salt packets to avoid heat strokes.

Since New Year’s, storm after storm had pummeled the state, dropping epic quantities of water and snow. Houses and farms and dairies flooded, and people were using excavators to hastily build earthen dikes around their properties. In a valley where powerful interests had long jockeyed for access to water, the arguments were now about who would bear the flood. A froth of brown storm water started to spread toward the houses. Had someone intentionally cut the levee, jeopardizing Allensworth, not to mention someone else’s farm, to save his own?

Partners in risk The total area at high risk for bat viruses to infect humans more than doubled in size in Laos between 2002 and 2020. The animals, known to be susceptible to bat viruses, included raccoon dogs, bamboo rats and porcupines. As China boomed in recent decades, global demand for rubber also skyrocketed, leading to further development and deforestation here. Already, scientists have found local bats bearing viruses closely related to those responsible for the 2003 SARS and COVID-19 pandemics.

As one who moved from the New York City area to a purple suburb of blue Charleston, S.C., I save a fortune in state, local and property taxes. South Carolina doesn’t tax Social Security benefits, which are outrageously taxed by the federal government and most blue states. And my property taxes are about 90 percent lower than they would be in the New York City area.
