Plenty of companies are reining in their rhetoric and in some cases action on issues such as sustainability and diversity. Over the past decade, many corporations have at least professed to take a more active role in social issues, under pressure from their customers and, more importantly, employees. After last year's Bud Light debacle, which was a real blow to its business, executives fear they'll be the next target of some anti-woke outcry. For the fourth quarter of 2020, 131 companies mentioned ESG, and 34 mentioned DEI or diversity and inclusion. This may be a great un-wokening, but maybe corporate America was actually never that committed to the idea in the first place.

“I do not believe at all that he’s divisive in the Jets locker room and within their own building. While on the field he’s on a Hall of Fame trajectory, some of Rodgers’ behavior away from the sport shows a different side to the man. As Rodgers ran onto the field, carrying an American flag and with AC/DC’s ‘Thunderstruck’ booming out, Jets fans went wild. Rodgers’ arrival in New York during the offseason had looked like a masterstroke, on and off the field for the Jets franchise. But after missing out on nearly the whole season through injury, Rodgers’ season-ending media conference last week ended with him stressing winning.

The new protocol involves perfume samples on display and a salesperson on call to retrieve the item should a patron want to purchase. The company told CNN the change was implemented because perfumes and colognes were among the most frequently shoplifted items in Sephora stores, and shoplifting numbers were trending higher. At Sephora, consumers could handle the product themselves, wandering the aisles and filling up shopping baskets like they were at the supermarket. Returning to a different perfume shopping model is a bit of a return to the status quo of an earlier era. Previous generations did more interfacing with salespeople in stores, particularly for items like perfume, and perhaps we should too.

Jamie Dimon makes anxiety a feature not a bug
  + stars: | 2023-10-13 | by ( John Foley | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +4 min
The mega-bank Jamie Dimon runs is performing strongly, and yet he openly frets and rants about what’s coming: higher interest rates, smothering regulation, recession, war. Lest nerves be soothed by those trends, Dimon lays on caveats with a trowel. Dimon can afford to dwell on the negative because JPMorgan is strong and liquid. If calamity strikes, JPMorgan’s high returns, high capital levels and sheer size make it akin to a safe haven. It also slightly reduced its forecast of expenses and credit-card write-offs from numbers given with second-quarter earnings.

Your investments may be haunted

Stocks often struggle when government bond yields are elevated, since it means investors can get high returns on less risky assets. But here’s the kicker: As the price of bonds go up when lots of people buy them, yields go down. When official interest rates rise so do investors’ expectations for returns on bonds, known as yields. This creates an incentive for investors to sell the bonds they currently hold and buy newly issued ones that offer higher interest payments. Back to the programWhen official interest rates rise, which is what’s happened over the past year and a half, so do investors’ expectations for returns on bonds.

Gen Z are abandoning the girlboss lifestyle to enter the new "snail girl era" taking off on TikTok. The term "snail girl" was coined by Sienna Ludbey in an article for Fashion Journal in September titled "'Snail girl era': Why I'm slowing down and choosing to be happy rather than busy." "'Hot take for the week, my inner girlboss is dead and my 'snail girl' era has begun,'" Ludbey wrote. Its features editor Maggie Zhou said in the video: "the girlboss is rolling over in her grave, welcome to the snail girl era." Although choosing the snail girl lifestyle may be more gratifying, it could result in financial or other consequences further down the road.

They can also rile up Trump's own party, which then incorporates the former president's vendettas and impulses into its own agenda. Though most in his party have stayed quiet, Trump's comments about Milley horrified some Republicans. On the debate stage last week, Trump’s rivals for the GOP nomination didn't address the former president's more incendiary rhetoric. Democrats, including Biden, have warned that Trump and supporters in his Make America Great Again movement are a threat to American democracy. At last week's California Republican Party convention in a hotel ballroom in Anaheim, Trump’s rhetoric reached yet another level.

In a tight election, amid questionable economic conditions and with the normality that Biden promised in 2020 still fleeting, the threat may be greater than ever. A pseudo general election campaignBoth Trump and Biden showed up in Michigan courting blue-collar votes this week. He returned to the theme that democracy is under attack – seemingly a slam dunk given Trump’s week of autocratic outbursts and demagoguery. And all previous evidence suggests that, among GOP voters at least, Trump legal travails only boost his poll numbers and fundraising. To anyone who has forgotten the constant tearing at legal, political and constitutional norms that characterized almost every day of the last presidency, Gaetz and his fellow MAGA troops are proving that Trumpism sows chaos.

A spokesperson for Putin said the Russian president hasn't decided if he will run again in 2024. But Putin's feigned indecision is his standard schtick, a Russia expert told Insider. Putin's spokesman said there are no candidates who would pose a real threat to Putin's power. A spokesperson for Putin told Russian state media this week that the president has not decided whether he will run again in next year's election. In reality, there's little question that Putin will run in — and win — his fifth presidential election since 2000 come spring.

Presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy was the breakout star of the first GOP debate on Wednesday. According to a series of polls taken by the Washington Post/FiveThirtyEight/Ipsos in the lead up to the first Republican presidential debate, 13% of Republican primary voters had an "unfavorable" view of Ramaswamy before he took the stage. After the debate, the poll found, 26% of potential primary voters who watched the debate rated Ramaswamy the winner, behind only DeSantis. Throughout the debate, Ramaswamy jumped in as often as he could, seizing the second-largest portion of speaking time, according to the New York Times. The other candidates, however, didn't let Ramaswamy simply get away with his repeated attacks on the debate stage.

GOP presidential candidate and Florida Gov. Likely Republican voters, however, told the New York Times they'd prefer the government stay away from limiting what corporations can support. Ron DeSantis' presidential campaign is in hot water after a majority of likely Republican voters said they want the government to stay away from influencing what corporations can and can't support. As he continues to double and triple-down on his anti-woke schtick, it doesn't seem like it's doing him many favors in the race to become the GOP presidential nominee. But as his presidential campaign falters and likely GOP voters make it clear that fighting "wokeism" isn't a priority, DeSantis keeps belaboring the point.

Reddit came along and said, oh, we need to protect Reddit from the rise of these large language models. So I don’t think they’re totally out of the woods. But I want to challenge you on this, because I don’t necessarily think that it’s a bad thing if we have past peak trust and safety.

But after his 19% margin win on Tuesday over Democrat Charlie Crist, DeSantis may in fact be the Republican Party’s savior. Somebody needs to deliver the GOP from Trump, and from that victory margin to his polling ahead of the former president, signs point to DeSantis as The One. Trump versus DeSantis is a fight between two men with messiah complexes who want us to believe each is the leader America needs. Could DeSantis win a national election?
