Ohio State is hiring former Houston Texans and Penn State head coach Bill O'Brien as its offensive coordinator, a person with direct knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Thursday night. ESPN first reported Ohio State was hiring O'Brien. Buckeyes coach Ryan Day has been Ohio State's primary play-caller since being promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach in 2019 to replace Urban Meyer. Washington has targeted Arizona's Jedd Fisch and is negotiating a deal with him to succeed Kalen DeBoer as the next coach of the Huskies, according to a person with knowledge of the talks. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Arizona and Fisch were not making any public announcements yet. Less than a week after playing for the national championship, the Huskies moved quickly to fill the vacancy created when DeBoer left for Alabama. Arizona is moving to the Big 12 starting next season but is facing financial issues within its athletic department, and Fisch could see more stability at Washington. Fisch, 47, would be the fourth head coach at Washington since the 2019 season.

It was a head-spinning week that saw football coaching greats Bill Belichick, Nick Saban and Pete Carroll all exit their jobs after decades roaming the sidelines. But there’s one venerable NFL head coach in his early 70s who still has a team in the playoffs. Actually, he has five of them.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Kalen DeBoer stood at a lectern, only a few feet from Nick Saban, and enthusiastically embraced the chance to both replace and learn from his larger-than-life predecessor. All that makes it easier to be the guy who replaces the guy who brought six national championships to Tuscaloosa in 17 years. A huge photo of Saban and players hoisting a national championship trophy hung on the wall behind DeBoer as he talked to reporters. DeBoer spoke with Saban on the phone Friday morning and called him again the next morning. Still, he wiped away tears while talking about leaving his Washington players who made it to the brink of a national title.
