CNN —Prisoners at a Russian maximum security penal colony have killed one staff member and took others hostage, Russian state media reported Friday. Inmates captured correctional facility staff at a disciplinary commission meeting, Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service of Russia told state media outlet TASS. The incident took place at penal colony IK-19 in in the town of Surovikino, in Russia’s southern Volgograd region. At least three prisoners participated in the attack, according to TASS, and a hostage rescue operation is underway. CNN —Ukraine’s military has claimed it sank a Russian submarine in a port in Crimea, in what would be another major setback for Moscow in the occupied peninsula. The submarine Rostov-on-Don was hit in the port of Sevastopol on Friday, the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces said in a statement Saturday. “The boat sank on the spot,” the General Staff said, without providing further evidence. The submarine was “severely damaged” in a Ukrainian missile attack in September 2023, according to Ukraine’s General Staff. Ukraine said on Tuesday that it used 7 exploding drones to destroy a Russian radar system. Ukrainian media said the destroyed system was a Nebo-U, which monitors hundreds of miles of airspace. Ukraine assessed that the Nebo-U, downed by cheap drones, was worth $100 million. Ukrainian outlets reported that the destroyed Nebo-U was worth about $100 million. Multiple variations of the Nebo, which translates to "sky" in Russian, are used by Russian air and ground forces.
