And possibly even more than the big box competitors, department stores have suffered from consumers shifting to buying items online rather than in person. The steady closing of the department stores that once served as “anchors” of malls across suburban America has been another nail in the coffin of many malls, hurting the department stores that remained in hollowed-out malls with a fraction of their earlier traffic. CNN —Four people are dead, including two children, and one person was critically injured in a stabbing in Far Rockaway, Queens, on Sunday morning, police said. Two police officers were injured responding to the home, where a fire also broke out, and the suspect is dead. Two officers who responded to the location, 467 Beach 22nd Street in the Far Rockaway neighborhood, saw a man leaving with luggage, Chief Maddrey said. When they stopped him, the man stabbed one officer in the head and the other in the neck with a steak knife before one of the officers shot him. The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Merrins died Wednesday in Los Angeles at age 91 after a long illness, according to UCLA, where he coached for 14 years. Safety officials at one New York beach are ramping up the use of drones to try to prevent potentially dangerous interactions between humans and sharks. Lifeguards and New York State Park Police officers at Jones Beach — a state park that stretches 6.5 miles along the Southern coast of Long Island and sees six million visitors a year — are using the technology to monitor the waters off the shore. Throughout, the great white is characterized as a dogged predator obsessed with human flesh. I’d never suggest that the victims of shark attacks had it coming, or that cinemagoers should feel an iota of shame.
