The financial sector, along with other value-oriented sectors, is beginning to significantly underperform the major equity benchmarks over the last six weeks. We'll share a potential short candidate, close to breaking down through a key support level that could indicate much further downside to come. First, let's visualize the relative performance of the financial sector, along with three other value sectors that have all shown deterioration since April. In searching through the financial sector for an actionable chart to play potential downside, I discovered that Progressive Corp. (PGR) is showing all the signs of a bearish rotation. BEFORE MAKING ANY FINANCIAL DECISIONS, YOU SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER SEEKING ADVICE FROM YOUR OWN FINANCIAL OR INVESTMENT ADVISOR.

What do the charts say after this sudden 20% drop in price? After making a new all-time high of around $318 in early March, Salesforce demonstrated choppy, sideways price action into mid-April. A gap lower in price pushed CRM below its 50-day moving average, which often serves as an early warning sign of an impending trend change. From mid-April until this week, Salesforce has again settled into a sideways price range, this time between $268 and $290. While CRM was in a somewhat precarious position leading into this week, the gap lower post-earnings represented a sudden revaluation for this former technology leader.

We're using the closing prices here to make it easier to detect a "bullish momentum divergence," which is where prices are trending down, but price momentum is actually trending higher. This disagreement between price and momentum often occurs at market lows and can serve as an important indicator of a trend rotation. In August-September 2023, this bullish divergence led to a 20% rally into year-end 2023. Off the COVID low in 2020, we've seen fairly consistent support around $110, which was last tested in March 2023. "Bitcoin continues to demonstrate its inability to successfully get through that stubborn $70k resistance level," Wolfe's Rob Ginsberg said in a note Wednesday. "It reminds us of another group that has been unable to overcome its own resistance level ... small caps," he continued. STIs: How to talk about them with a new partner

However, “how to bring it up is tricky because any topic related to sexual health is so taboo and so value-based,” Brito said. But regardless, “it’s important for you to be assertive about your own health,” Brito said, especially as rates of STIs have been rising over the last several years. Whether it’s due to shame or selfishness, not everyone is forthcoming about their sexual health status. Additionally, it’s easier to be proactive and prevent contracting STIs than it is to have to handle a health problem. “There are many … STIs that have really bad stigmas that actually don’t cause any long-term problems,” Earle-Cruickshanks said.

This week, ADBE flashed the dreaded "death cross" signal — a pattern that typically points to further downside — with the 50-day moving average crossing down through the 200-day moving average. Adobe created a classic double top pattern in January, when the stock retested the December 2023 high around $630 and failed to break above this resistance level. It's worth noting that the death cross observed this week happened only after the stock had established a clear downtrend of lower highs and lower lows. This support level, just below $500, aligns well with the September 2023 price low. Back in 2022, a similar death cross resulted in an additional 45% drop for Adobe before the eventual low was established.

But despite the struggles of the largest stocks in the sector, Block (SQ) appears to breaking above a key resistance level. The key with a head and shoulders pattern is to wait for the "trigger", which is when the price actually breaks through the neckline. Here we can see that the recent breakout above the neckline was preceded by a price gap higher in February. Immediately after the price gap, SQ dropped down to around $75, a level which was retested again in early March. With inverted head and shoulders breakout on the weekly chart, and clearly defined risk levels on the daily chart, Block may just be worth investors' attention.

But one fabled device has left scientists speculating on its existence for hundreds of years — the death ray. For his 2022 science project, Sener recreated the Archimedes screw, a device for raising and moving water. Sener found the death ray to be one of the more intriguing devices — sometimes referred to as the heat ray. Archimedes’ death ray is more commonly speculated to have been an array of several mirrors or polished shields. Sener’s mom, Melanie, was not surprised by her son’s choice in science project.

The performance of the once-dominant Magnificent 7 stocks has certainly shifted in the first quarter, with charts like Apple (AAPL) beginning to diverge from the rest of the mega-cap growth leadership names. But is the recent decline for AAPL just the beginning? Since a strong rally in the first half of 2023, Apple has essentially been in a basing pattern. The RSI has moved into the oversold range as well, which tells me to expect at least some sort of bounce off this well-established level of price support. Biotechnology stocks have recently shown renewed strength, and improving momentum may just push these names toward the top of the leaderboard. Second, this level also represented a 38.2% retracement level based on the 2021 high and 2022 low, which is a widely followed support level based on the Fibonacci methodology. This week, IBB has bounced off that support level, making a new 52-week high as it briefly pushed above the 50% retracement level around $140. The weekly chart reinforces that biotechnology stocks may still be in the early stages of this advance, with lots of daylight between current levels and the 2021 highs. The price of the flagship cryptocurrency was last higher by 6% at $60,391.10, according to Coin Metrics. Bitcoin has soared more than 18% this week alone, after a week-long pause of this year's rally. "The economics of bitcoin dictate that it should continue to drive higher." Specifically, the halving, an event mandated in the Bitcoin code, reduces the bitcoin mining reward by half in order to limit the supply. "Institutional capital is still getting up to speed with bitcoin ETFs – platform approvals, advisor education, client education – I expect a lot more demand is still under the surface and yet to be seen."

While the major equity averages were rallying off their October 2023 lows, many gambling names did not participate in the rally. DraftKings (DKNG) DKNG certainly has the most established uptrend in the group, having sustained a fairly consistent uptrend through much of 2023. Higher highs and higher lows have marked the next 14 months, forming a classic Dow Theory uptrend. The October 2023 low was noteworthy in that the stock found support right at the August low around $26. Wynn Resorts (WYNN) WYNN has undergone a similar reversal off a December 2023 low, and also has recently broken above the crucial 200-day moving average.

The cup-and-handle (also known as a cup-with-handle) pattern occurs when you have a rounded basing pattern after a rally phase. Then, in December 2023, both stocks retested their July peak, which formed the cup of this pattern. If this level would fail to hold, then we'll have one more Magnificent 7 stock in a confirmed bearish phase. What concerns me most about these patterns popping up is not just that it suggests caution for these two technology stocks, which I believe it does. The settlement dates to the Stone Age, a time researchers once considered too unsophisticated for such structures. Originally, archaeologists believed similar settlements were only about 3,000 years old, Archaeology magazine reported. The Neolithic settlement is one of the oldest known fortified structures in the world and was constructed hundreds of years earlier than most other similar structures. Researchers long considered more mobile hunter-gatherers incapable of building such sophisticated structures. "The discovery challenges stereotypes of such societies as simple and mobile, revealing their ability to create sophisticated structures," Schreiber told Newsweek .

.SPX YTD mountain S & P 500, YTD As for the "too far, too fast" argument, it's worth recalling that all the S & P 500 has done is nearly complete an almost-symmetrical two-year round trip. Ned Davis Research U.S. strategist Ed Clissold looked back at prior times the S & P 500 has gone more than a year without making a record high. This is always a tricky proposition – cash that leaves money markets to buy stocks leaves the seller of the stocks with cash. For one thing, $6 trillion is only about 12% of total U.S. equity market cap, near the lower end of its historical range. At the 2009 market low money markets were 50% of equity market cap.

Banknotes of Japanese yen and U.S. dollar are seen in this illustration picture taken September 23, 2022. U.S. Treasuries were subdued as investors hunkered down for a European Central Bank meeting and U.S. GDP data later in the week. "Potentially there are two camps out fighting around 150, so that's why dollar-yen doesn't move from here," Yamamoto said. While there was some speculation the BOJ might once again tweak its yield-curve policy band at a scheduled policy review next week, the BOJ had also shown it will not let domestic yields rise sharply, he said. Yields dipped on Friday after the BOJ announced more loans to encourage financial institutions to buy JGBs.

The S & P 500 ended Thursday at 4,060.43. A key test for the S & P 500 The S & P 500 pushed above its 200-day moving average last Friday. Redler, who follows short-term technicals, said it is important for the S & P 500 to hold between 3,970 and 3,990. She said the S & P 500 is showing signs of being overbought short term, though there continues to be short-term upside momentum. We need to see stocks like Apple, Alphabet, Microsoft, we need to see these stocks going from downtrend to uptrend.
The outlook for next year is a bit better for stocks, but the first half sounds like it could be downright ugly. The strategist expects lows to be retested due to what could be a significant decline in earnings as interest rates rise. Jeff Kleintop, Charles Schwab's chief global investment strategist, expects a shallow recession may already have begun. He predicts the first half will be worse for stocks than the back half of the year, with a choppiness similar to the past six months. Calvasina expects small caps to be an area of outperformance, and she still sees value in energy and financials.
The top stock strategist at JPMorgan thinks investors should stop buying the dip as the impact of Federal Reserve rate hikes is about to hit the economy, corporate earnings and share prices. "We believe that further market and economic weakness may occur as a result of central bank overtightening," said Marko Kolanovic, the bank's chief global market strategist, in a note Wednesday. "Our view on risk markets in 2023 consists of 2 periods: market turmoil and economic decline that will force interest rate cuts, and subsequent economic and asset recovery," said Kolanovic. "Until late summer this year we thought that corporate and consumer resilience will be able to withstand the significant increase of interest rates, wealth destruction, and global geopolitical uncertainty," he wrote. "The recent crisis of crypto schemes is likely not over, and its end will put additional pressure on risk sentiment and consumers," the report states.
This is the daily notebook of Mike Santoli, CNBC's senior markets commentator, with ideas about trends, stocks and market statistics. The multi-day bounce has now taken the S & P 500 back to where it sat as Fed Chair Powell started taking questions and overtly raised his own outlook for how high rates must go six days ago. The ICE Bank of America MOVE Index (the Treasury market's VIX) is still in an uptrend but these pullbacks have coincided with equity rallies all year. The average stock has dropped 36% from its high and the equal-weight S & P is at a relatively undemanding 14-times forward earnings. VIX bottoms (and equity rally tops) have come a few times this year near 19.
An ETF that mirrors the S & P technology sector has fallen 33% this year, while the ETF representing the energy sector is up 45%. On top of that, Strategas found that the energy sector is punching above its weight when it comes to earnings power. For instance, its 12-month trailing earnings weight among S & P 500 companies is more than double its S & P 500 market cap weight of about 5%. In the past 50 years, the sector has traditionally been about 11% of the S & P 500, he said. S & P energy earnings are expected to soar 121% in the third quarter, while total S & P 500 earnings are expected to grow just 4.1%, according to Refinitiv.
