There is no need for panic buying, and we encourage consumers to shop responsibly. Bill Simon, former CEO of Walmart, stressed that panic buying is serious and can have a cascading effect on domestic products. "Panic buying not only impacts the availability of imported products, but domestic products as well as consumers shift their purchase behavior," warned Simon. Walmart and Target did not immediately respond to requests about any panic buying patterns identified at their stores. John Catsimatidis, owner of the NYC super chain Gristedes, said the panic buying is occurring and showing no signs of slowing down.

In one of her most popular videos, she stuffs a mini Coach Tabby bag ($195 online) with a mini Charlotte Tilbury lipstick, mini Chanel mascara, mini Tarte Shape Tape concealer, mini Chanel compact powder and a mini Versace perfume — along with other essentials. Covid made her realize she didn’t have to carry around as much as she thought she did, so she jumped on the mini bag trend. Even people who don’t use mini products are locked into Barker’s content.

A particular type of retail fraud soars during the summer season. Scot Case, executive director of the Center for Retail Sustainability at the National Retail Federation, said wardrobing can drive up costs and waste for retailers if the product can no longer be resold. "As companies build and integrate take back programs to repair and resell used items, returns take on a new role, fueling a new circular market." The average value of a returned item for Optoro's customers is $85. The highest item value reported as returned in the survey was $200.

The American Red Cross is facing an emergency blood shortage after the national supply fell by more than 25% since July 1. The organization said Monday that extreme temperatures and oppressive heat waves impacted almost 100 blood drives last month, in almost every state where the Red Cross collects blood. Blood donations typically slow down during the summer because of travel and other seasonal activities, but the Red Cross said extreme heat exacerbated the challenge, contributing to a shortfall of more than 19,000 blood donations in July. Type O blood is routinely in short supply because type O positive is the most common blood type, and type O negative is the universal blood type needed for emergency transfusions. Those who donate by Aug. 31 will receive a $20 Amazon gift card, the Red Cross said.

Fully quit of school and finally in love, I had been offered a cabin in West Virginia for the summer. Within the month I had restocked my childhood armory — net, killing jar, spreading board, pins, display cases — and was again out roaming the fields. Watching a documentary recently about the old men of Italy’s Piedmont who hunt for truffles, I noticed that sometimes when they explain themselves all talk of truffles drops away. The one thing I have not yet discarded is the butterfly net. I don’t know if the same is true for birders with their binoculars or deer hunters with their rifles, but for me, walking with the butterfly net alters my perceptions.

"Store Closing" signs at a Buy Buy Baby store in the Brooklyn borough of New York, on Monday, Feb. 6, 2023. The New Jersey baby retailer that bought Buy Buy Baby's intellectual property from its bankrupt parent company Bed Bath and Beyond also snatched up 11 of its leases and is well-positioned to reopen stores, court records show. However, Dream on Me could use the Buy Buy Baby IP assets it already obtained – plus the leases – to reopen the beloved chain. The leases Dream on Me won at auction, which are considered to be in prime real estate locations, are primarily dotted across the Northeast. Dream on Me, founded in 1988, has at least six brands under its portfolio, including Evolur Baby, Sweetpea Baby and Slumber Baby.

Across the intersection, security guards stood sentry in front of the Orpheum Theater, where “Pretty Woman: The Musical” was playing.
