CNN —Magician David Copperfield has denied allegations of sexual assault and misconduct, published in a report on Wednesday from The Guardian. One woman alleges she and her friend were drugged before Copperfield proceeded to have sex with them without their consent. “Everyone that knows David Copperfield will tell you that these recent allegations from one newspaper are the exact opposite of who David is. In fact, David has a record of risking his career to help protect women from powerful predators,” the statement from Copperfield’s representative read. As of publication, CNN is not aware of any legal investigations involving Copperfield or criminal charges filed against him relating to these allegations.

CNN —Rep. Mike Lawler, a moderate Republican from New York, expressed optimism on Sunday that a vote on funding for Ukraine’s war effort could land on the House floor when members return from recess early next month. Divisions in the House GOP have so far stymied progress on sending aid to the key US ally. I am not going to delve into the details of that conversation, but I am confident that he’s going to bring that bill to the floor and that we will have a vote,” Lawler said. Lawler called Greene’s effort to oust Johnson “idiotic.”“It’s not actually going to help advance the cause she believes in, and in fact it undermines our House Republican majority,” Lawler said. Democrats have signaled they may be willing to save Johnson if he moves a Ukraine aid bill they can support, but one including new border restrictions, as Lawler has suggested, falls outside their demands.

During the interview, Naim rejected defining Hamas’ attacks as terrorism, falsely claiming that his organization does not target civilians. Hamas has denied international organizations any access to those hostages still in captivity to assess their wellbeing. While Naim denied the allegations of sexual violence, he said Hamas was unable to account for the wellbeing of the hostages because of the continued bombardment of Gaza. In recent weeks, many civilians in Gaza have increasingly blamed Hamas for the mounting starvation. This year, it comes against the backdrop of the ongoing war in Gaza, Israeli crackdowns on Palestinian militant groups in the occupied West Bank and Hamas’ calls for more attacks.

“We have warned for years that either the United States would write the rules for digital trade or China would,” Senator Mike Crapo, a Republican from Idaho, lamented in a press statement. That paper explains how U.S. trade officials came to champion a digital trade policy agenda that was nearly identical to what Google, Apple and Facebook wanted: No restrictions on the flow of data across borders. No laws that would curb monopolies or encourage more competition — a position that is often cloaked in clauses prohibiting discrimination against American companies. Many smaller tech companies complain that big players engage in monopolistic behavior that should be regulated. A group of smaller tech companies called the Coalition for App Fairness thanked Ms. Tai for dropping support for the so-called tech-friendly agenda at the World Trade Organization.

WASHINGTON—The AR-15 was Jared Golden ’s weapon of choice for self-defense. He knew how lethal the gun was, and how easy to use, from his days serving as a Marine, and he kept one in his home in Lewiston, Maine. He was confident it would keep him safe. Then last month, a gunman used a weapon much like that one to kill 18 people and wound more than a dozen not more than a five-minute jog from the Democratic U.S. representative’s home.

It has incorporated pulse oximetry into all of its smart watches since then, with the exception of the cheaper Apple Watch SE. case is only one front in the battle between Masimo and Apple. In 2020, Masimo sued Apple in Federal District Court in California, alleging theft of trade secrets. Last year, Apple sued Masimo in federal court in Delaware, charging that Masimo was the one doing the illegal copying and was trying to knock Apple out of the market to make way for its own watch. Masimo counter-claimed that Apple had infringed its patents, falsely advertised its watches’ capabilities and violated antitrust and fair competition laws.

Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell said on Friday that Chinese restrictions affecting roughly A$20 billion of annual trade as of last May had shrunk to hit about A$2 billion of exports. The U.S. Trade Representative’s office, which has sided with Australia in the trade dispute, declined to comment on China’s move to reduce barley tariffs. Wine producer Treasury Wine Estate’s shares reversed earlier declines to close 2.7% following the barley decision against an otherwise flat market. Chinese buyers had turned to Canada, France and Argentina to replace Australian barley supplies over the last three years, while Australian sellers shifted exports to feed barley markets in the Middle East.

New York CNN Business —The Covid-19 pandemic exposed glaring weaknesses in America’s medical supply chains, causing a frantic scramble for masks, respirators and other gear needed to fight the virus. Now, a bipartisan effort in Congress is attempting to boost medical supply chain resilience and ease the country’s reliance on less friendly nations like China for critical medical supplies – before the next disaster strikes. The bill aims to improve supply chain resilience by giving the White House the ability to diversify and expand supply networks while simultaneously eliminating unneeded trade barriers. Earlier this month, the White House hailed the end of the supply chain nightmare that had sent consumer prices surging and left some store shelves empty. The administration released a scorecard that indicated dozens of recommendations from a 2021 supply chain review have been implemented, including some related to strained medical supply chains.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen met with U.S. Rep. Ken Calvert, a Republican from California, in Taipei this week. TAIPEI—The U.S. and Taiwan moved a step closer toward a bilateral trade and investment initiative, with both sides signaling progress in the talks at a time of heightened tensions between Washington and Beijing. The U.S. Trade Representative’s office on Thursday released a summary of proposed texts covering customs administration and trade facilitation, good regulatory practices, services domestic regulation, anticorruption, and small and midsize enterprises. A similar statement was released by Taiwan’s trade office at the same time. The five topics are among a dozen trade areas that the two sides previously agreed to negotiate.
During 2022, Mexico purchased nearly $5 billion worth of corn from the U.S., making it the second largest importer after China. WASHINGTON—The U.S. said it is seeking formal consultations with Mexico over its agricultural biotechnology policies—a request officials said is aimed at Mexico’s import ban on genetically modified American corn and other crops. The U.S. Trade Representative’s office said the request was filed under the U.S-Mexico-Canada Agreement, a trilateral trade pact known as the USMCA that took effect in 2020.
