Spending my 50th birthday alone in Australia after getting deported was devastating. Related storiesWhen I finally returned to the US with the correct visa, I thought the worst was behind me. CNN —A rare painting from René Magritte’s famous “L’empire des lumières” series is estimated to sell for more than $95 million at Christie’s New York this fall, a sum that would break the Surrealist artist’s record at auction and represent a major win for the auction house after softened sales across the industry. “L’empire des lumières,” from 1954, is one of the 27 paintings in which Magritte explored light by painting a sunlit sky above a darkened street scene. René Magritte's L'empire des lumières Courtesy of Chrstie’sThe present painting comes from the estate of the late Mica Ertegun, an interior designer who was married to Ahmet Ertegun, a co-founder of Atlantic Records and a prolific art collector. “But of all the works she lived with, Magritte’s ‘L’empire des lumières’ most nearly captures her aesthetic philosophy in its balance and restraint,” Max Carter, Christie’s vice chairman of 20th and 21st century art, said in a statement. Last week, the auction house revealed it is acquiring Gooding & Company, a collector car auctioneer, 17 years after exiting the car market.

NBC News interviewed 10 women who say they gave birth with Baker, two in Wisconsin before 2014 and eight in Mexico in the years since. On social media, accounts with the usernames “Heather Baker Midwife” and “heatherbakermidwife,” one of which had her photo, sent “cease and desist” messages to Nosek and another former client. John Beard, a spokesperson for the Wisconsin licensing agency, declined to answer questions about Baker, citing an ongoing investigation. After an initial check when Baker arrived, Nosek told NBC News, Baker checked his heartbeat only four times after her labor began. Baker, Nosek said, tried to resuscitate him.

Thomas is among what retirement experts are calling "silver squatters" — adults in their mid-50s who are even more woefully unprepared than some boomers, despite being about a decade away from retirement. This group of Gen Xers — the generation of Americans aged 43 to 59 — largely expects to postpone or work past their retirement. AdvertisementA majority also don't expect to receive any inheritance, despite their boomer predecessors holding onto trillions in wealth. The gap in retirement readiness could be due to the "unique" challenges of Gen Xers, according to Dylan Tyson, the head of retirement strategies at Prudential. Around half of Gen Xers are saving without a general plan for retirement, Prudential found.

WASHINGTON — In the heat of the 2024 campaign season, more than 400 first-time voters from across the country gathered here in July to discuss political issues and the upcoming election — but with a focus on being polite rather than being polarized. The gathering was a so-called deliberative poll where the participants were randomly selected to produce a representative sample of young voters from the entire nation. There have been past “America in One Room” studies of the general electorate, but this was the first to specifically examine first-time young voters. And the portion of young voters who opposed drilling in the Artic wilderness increased, from 72% before to 76% afterward. 'I see that point': Young voters gain more respect for differing viewsThe polling results also showed these young voters gaining more respect for differing viewpoints, with the share of participants saying their opponents had good reasons for their positions growing from 64% before the event to 71% afterward.

CNN —A vital system of Atlantic Ocean currents that influences weather across the world could collapse as soon as the late 2030s, scientists have suggested in a new study — a planetary-scale disaster that would transform weather and climate. This research suggests it’s more likely than not to collapse by 2050. The impacts of an AMOC collapse would leave parts of the world unrecognizable. The emphasis in ocean research on the timing of the collapse is a relatively new development, said Rahmstorf. This research gap means the predictions could underestimate how soon or fast a collapse would happen, Rahmstof said.

Biden became the first Democrat to win Georgia since 1992, when he defeated Trump by less than 12,000 votes. A Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll released this week found 47% of Black voters said Biden should continue his campaign, compared to 49% who said he should cede the nomination to someone else. A recent Pew Research Center survey found that among Biden supporters, 58% of Black supporters said both Biden and Trump ought to be replaced, compared with 84% of Asian supporters, 74% of White supporters and 67% of Hispanic supporters. Support among Black voters has long been the make or break point for Democratic politicians. In 2008, Black voters helped Barack Obama win the Democratic nomination and their high voter turnout helped him carry states like Ohio and North Carolina.

CNN —The Oscars of the food world — the James Beard Awards — were handed out Monday night to many chefs and restaurants reflecting cultures and regions that have long been overlooked when honoring culinary achievement in the United States. Outstanding Chef winner Michael Rafidi dedicated his award to Palestinian people all over the world in his acceptance speech. The 2024 winners bring heritage from all over the globe — the Philippines, Mexico, Japan, Peru, Vietnam, Senegal — to tables across the United States. This year’s awards also bring recognition to restaurants in many smaller towns and states that have not historically been recognized with James Beard Awards. Chef Masako Morishita received the James Beard Award for Emerging Chef.
