Long-shot Biden challenger Phillips won't run again for House
  + stars: | 2023-11-24 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
REUTERS/Reba Saldanha/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 24 (Reuters) - U.S. Representative Dean Phillips of Minnesota, a long-shot challenger to President Joe Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination, on Friday said he would not run for reelection. The 54-year-old millionaire businessman and three-term congressman last month said he would run against Biden, seizing on the president's lackluster approval ratings and voter wariness over his age. The post linked to an interview in the Minnesota Star Tribune paper, in which he explained his move. Phillips, who first won his seat in 2018 and won reelection in 2020 and 2022, said it would be "unproductive and uncomfortable" to run again, given his nomination bid. Phillips is unlikely to affect Biden's chance of securing the party's nomination, given the incumbent's deep resources, official party support and reshaping of the party's nominating contest calendar to help fend off any early challengers.

And Biden Won’t Even Take His Calls

U.S. Representative Dean Phillips (D., Minn.) greets supporters outside the statehouse in Concord, New Hampshire last month after filing the paperwork to put his name on the state’s presidential primary ballot. Photo: reba saldanha/ReutersPresident Joe Biden and his allies have been treating presidential nomination challenger Rep. Dean Phillips (D., Minn.) like a nobody—or worse. Now Mr. Phillips is looking less like a man trying to make a polite point and more like a guy who wants to win this thing. While the Democratic Party’s prominent governors and senators have still not chosen to challenge Mr. Biden, the White House may already understand that the relatively obscure man from the Land of 10,000 Lakes could be a formidable opponent. Mr. Phillips at first tried running a nice respectful campaign claiming that Mr. Biden has been a successful president but is just not the right candidate for 2024.

"I seeded my campaign with capital because I had to," Phillips, 54, told Reuters in an interview on the sidelines of an event at Manny's, a meeting space in San Francisco. "I will be in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and I'll be going to New York and Chicago, and Miami and larger cities to raise resources and campaign," Phillips said. Phillips said he did not know exactly how much he had raised since launching his campaign. "I think Joe Biden is a good man but he's been doing this for 50 years," Phillips told a crowd of several dozen in San Francisco. Democratic presidential candidate U.S. Representative Dean Phillips (D-Minn.) speaks after filing the paperwork to put his name on the ballot in Concord, N.H. on Friday. Photo: reba saldanha/ReutersPresident Biden is only weeks shy of turning 81 years old, most of the public thinks he shouldn’t run for a second term, and the polls suggest he might lose next year to Donald Trump. Yet Mr. Biden has been running for the Democratic nomination all but unopposed—at least until Friday. That’s when Dean Phillips filed paperwork in New Hampshire to challenge Mr. Biden, and give the 54-year-old Minnesota Congressman credit for daring to tell Democratic voters the hard political truth that bigger party names duck.

Wednesday's ruling by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon in Florida is a win for prosecutors, who said it would be inappropriate for Trump to be able to review classified documents at the very location where he is accused of illegally and haphazardly storing them. The order requires Trump and his lawyers to review and discuss all classified evidence in what is known as a sensitive compartmented information facility, or SCIF. Trump has pleaded not guilty and denied the charges, along with his co-defendants Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira.

The main requirements under the federal RICO law are at least two underlying crimes and participation in a criminal enterprise over a long period of time. WHY ARE PROSECUTORS USING RICO? That means prosecutors would not necessarily have to prove Trump personally broke the law but knowingly coordinated with others who did. RICO cases are inherently more complex because prosecutors must first prove the existence of a criminal enterprise. Prosecutors will need to prove that Trump and his co-defendants worked together towards a common criminal purpose, which is not always as straightforward as proving an underlying RICO crime.

Jean Carroll for defamation, alleging she falsely accused him of rape after a jury in a civil trial found that he sexually abused her. Trump's counterclaim against Carroll in Manhattan federal court comes after a jury's unusual finding in May that he sexually abused and defamed but did not rape Carroll, a former Elle magazine advice columnist. "Donald Trump again argues, contrary to both logic and fact, that he was exonerated by a jury that found that he sexually abused E. Jean Carroll," Kaplan said. Trump's filing in that same lawsuit Tuesday cite Carroll's statements on CNN after the verdict, when she said Trump raped her despite the jury's finding that he only sexually abused her. WASHINGTON — New Hampshire Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan won re-election Tuesday, NBC News projects, defeating Republican Don Bolduc and keeping a critical seat in Democratic hands. While the race attracted less attention than some others, Hassan won her Senate seat six years ago in one of the closest races in the country, and Democrats had grown increasingly nervous in recent weeks as Bolduc seemed to gain strength in polls. After winning the nomination, however, he waffled on 2020, saying the election had not been stolen. Democratic Sen. Maggie Hassan at a campaign event on Sept. 10 in Dover, N.H.
