“I’ll let you know when I get him to agree,” Biden told reporters. Biden suggested to reporters Friday that one solution would be the creation of a Palestinian state without its own military. “I think there’s ways in which this could work.”Biden raised the imperative of an eventual Palestinian state with Netanyahu during their telephone call earlier in the day. It's the last of the three major rating agencies to maintain a top rating for the U.S. Treasury as Fitch lowered its rating in August and S&P removed its AAA in 2011. On one level, there's some relief the AAA rating was maintained despite the darker outlook. And that would at least keep the Federal Reserve at bay despite its warnings last week that another rate hike was still on the table. All this coincides with longstanding calls from countries across the developing world for an international system where they have more say. Beijing, he added, sees the US as merely “paying lip service” to the “liberal order” to hurt other countries. There were also "frank exchanges" between Blinken and Wang over the erupting conflict in the Middle East. The key area that appeared to show some positive momentum was toward an expected meeting between Biden and Xi on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit next month in San Francisco. "We are making preparations for such a meeting," said one of the senior administration officials briefing reporters on condition of anonymity. "China attaches importance to the U.S. side's hopes of stabilizing and improving U.S. ties with China," Wang was quoted as saying in his meeting with Biden. Investors may not be fully pricing in Merck 's strong treatment pipeline, according to UBS. Analyst Trung Huynh expects that "underappreciated pipeline readouts" will be the primary contributor to multiple expansion for the company. Huynh also noted that investors continue to underestimate the value of two key Merck treatments: Keytruda — used in cancer immunotherapy — and Gardasil, a vaccine targeting HPV. The analyst added that these two treatments and other underappreciated catalysts have all contributed to Merck's above-peer growth profile. The upgrade comes after the Food and Drug Administration approved the use of Keytruda for treatment with "platinum-containing chemotherapy as neoadjuvant treatment " on Monday.

The company earnings picture, meantime, was mixed to sour over the past 24 hours in both the U.S. and Europe. Despite decent demand at a typically awkward 20-year bond auction on Wednesday, yields continued to spiral higher overnight and ahead of Fed Chair Jerome Powell's key speech later on Thursday. The upshot of all factors has seen Treasury yields climb ever higher through the night - with two-year and 20-year yields , now both above 5.25%, the latter at a record high and the former the highest since 2006. Ten and five-year tenors also saw yields soar to within a hair's breadth of 5% early on Thursday too. The ructions in the bond market and incoming earnings saw Wall St indexes (.SPX), (.NDX) hit their lowest in 10 days on Wednesday and futures were in the red again ahead of the open today.

Biden leaves later on Tuesday for a high stakes visit to Israel and Jordan and Washington said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had agreed to let humanitarian aid reach besieged Gazans. That reversed a pre-weekend 'safety bid' that emerged amid fears an Israeli ground invasion into Gaza could draw other regional countries and groups into the war. Before then, bond markets will have to negotiate tomorrow's 20-year Treasury auction. The relatively new 20-year tenor has often proved unpopular and will be watched closely after a poor reception for the latest 30-year bond last week.

China's foreign minister Wang Yi and U.S. national security advisor Jake Sullivan met in Malta over the weekend. The bilateral talks come ahead of a possible meeting between China's President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Joe Biden at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders meeting in November. Their Malta meeting convened after several high level officials visited Beijing in recent months and just before Wang's meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov later this week.
