Havana remains one of my favorite cities in the world to visit. Diego Grandi/ShutterstockI've visited Havana over 30 times and studied and researched the city for 10 different guidebooks. I love the Cuban city for its irrepressible street energy and animated, resilient people. When first arriving in town, I gravitate to the historic squares and thoroughfares of the Old Town and then head for a lengthy stroll along the Malecón sea drive. Here, at one of the city's most famous meetup spots, I can get a handle on the city's mood, reacquaint myself with my Cuban friends, and see what's changed since my last visit.

Read previewBy the time school started again, my son was excited to be reunited with his friends. He looked so proud walking into the play yard that first day back, Super Mario Brothers backpack stuffed with his first grade essentials. AdvertisementBut then, as I was tucking him into bed one evening, he turned to me and said: "Mama, Carla doesn't want to play me anymore." I also appreciated the idea she mentioned about reminding our son what it means to be a good friend. A month after our conversation, I picked him up from his after-school program, and there was Carla, playing with the other girls.

CNN —Responses to the recent statements by the commander in chief of the Ukrainian military, Valery Zaluzhny, warning of a stalemate war between Ukraine and Russia, have been varied and revealing. On the other side, skeptics of Western support for Ukraine gloatingly cited the interview as evidence that Ukraine should have capitulated at some imagined earlier opportunity. Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyi meets with the Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg on September 28, 2023 in Kyiv, Ukraine. It is not Ukraine that is desperate to continue war despite plentiful options to stop the bloodshed — it is Russia. And would there still be ‘fatigue’ in Western capitals if Ukraine had retaken more territories during the summer counteroffensive?
