About four years ago, when my landlord bought the property, I was his very first tenant. Before the pandemic, I had been in the market for quite a long time looking to buy a house. When I signed that first rental lease with my landlord in May 2020, I completely pulled myself out of the market. After being bummed about that, a few days later my landlord texted me saying, "Hey, I'm putting this house on the market. He shared with me that he bought his own place and that he was no longer going to be living in that house.

AdvertisementTikTok's stricter reviews arrive at a moment when employees are already facing a reduction in their annual bonuses due to a scheduling change. This one-time adjustment means staff will receive around 83% of their annual bonuses for 2023 work, prorated to 10 months instead of 12 months. The company did opt to pump up annual bonuses for high performers after it reported strong Q4 earnings. For example, last year, Reddit began letting go of employees across departments who had received high ratings in their most recent performance reviews.

Jackyenjoyphotography | Moment | Getty ImagesThe start of 2024 has not been kind to workers in industries that opened the year with layoffs. Recent U.S. Department of Labor data shows layoffs have been hovering near historic lows — and experts say getting laid off no longer has the same stigma it once did. The following steps can help you shore up your finances and kick-start your job search. Calculate severance pay, unused time offYou may receive a severance package from your employer or get paid for unused time off. If you're able to find a new job quickly, you may be able to bank the severance pay, he noted.

Just nine months after closing its deal to acquire One Medical, Amazon is exerting more control over the primary care provider's employee pay. Prior to the Amazon acquisition, One Medical gave stock grants without baking in any growth assumptions. Like One Medical, Amazon reinforces this through its competitive total compensation program which, for corporate employees, typically includes base pay and restricted stock units (RSUs). As One Medical is now part of Amazon and can no longer grant employees One Medical stock, we are transitioning employees to Amazon's stock-based compensation model. Amazon's pay policy has long been a source of frustration for many employees.

Patrick Kane is joining the Detroit Red Wings for the rest of the season, choosing the championship-rich franchise over other suitors for the four-time All-Star's return to the NHL from hip surgery. After the Blackhawks and New York Rangers he joined after a pre-deadline trade, the Red Wings are set to become Kane’s third Original Six team. Kane had similar control as a free agent, letting the market and the first month of the season play out before talking to interested teams. The Red Wings and Blackhawks were longtime, bitter rivals until Detroit was shifted from the Western to the Eastern Conference in 2013 as part of realignment. Kane follows a similar path to the player he's chasing for the U.S. scoring record: Mike Modano, who played 20 seasons for the Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars before finishing his career with the Red Wings.

Biden proposes ban on cable cord cutting fees

WASHINGTON — The Federal Communications Commission on Tuesday announced a rule proposal to ban early termination fees for cable and satellite service contracts. The proposed rule would require cable operators and direct broadcast satellite (DBS) providers to eliminate early cancellation fees. According to that order, cable television is one sector where fees can stifle competition, due to costs associated with canceling services or switching service providers. "Companies shouldn't lock you into services you don't want with large fees," President Joe Biden said via X on Tuesday. The agency has also proposed 'all-in-pricing' for cable and satellite services, so that customers will see the total service costs, fees included, up front.

However, variable-rate CDs and no-penalty CDs offer flexibility that may be worth considering. So far this year, CD rates have been increasing and I've managed to secure CDs with rates that range from 4.75% to 5.5% APY. "CD interest rates are for a 12-month period." Variable-rate CDBecause I've been mostly risk-averse with my CDs, one type that I've never tried are variable-rate CDs. For example, if you get a one-year CD paying 5% with the option to bump up, Manske said you can pay attention to CD rates and elect to update it if the rates rise.

NEW YORK (AP) — All models of Onewheel self-balancing electric skateboards are under recall after at least four deaths and multiple injuries were reported in recent years, federal regulators said last week. Future Motion has received dozens of incident reports involving these skateboards, the CPSC said Friday — including four deaths between 2019 and 2021 and serious injuries like paralysis, traumatic brain injury, fractures and ligament damage. The recall impacts all Onewheel electric skateboards — including Onewheel, Onewheel+, Onewheel+ XR, Onewheel Pint, Onewheel Pint X and Onewheel GT — sold online and through independent retailers from January 2014 through September of this year. Riders can check their board's eligibility and learn more about installing the update with Onewheel's app on Future Motion's website. Prior to last week's announcement, the CPSC warned consumers to stop using Onewheel electric skateboards back in November — similarly pointing to the reports of death and serious injuries.

Cboe declined to say whether those relations happened while Tilly was CEO or prior to his tenure at the helm. His resignation is the latest in a string of high-profile exits by CEOs whose personal conduct ran afoul of company policy. "When he became CEO, he grew that business from a little options exchange to a global, fintech and exchange leader. Cboe has exclusive rights to list flagship contracts linked to the Standard & Poor’s 500 stock index through 2032. "The silver lining is it doesn't look like it is related to strategic or financial issue for the company," Lau said of the CEO resignation.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative conducted layoffs this week, in a major blow to its education team. However, the cuts were entirely focused on employees in tech and grantmaking in CZI's education department, a core pillar of the organization's since its founding. As part of the changes, two leaders in CZI's education work are leaving their roles. While today's announcement most directly impacts our Education teammates, I know we are all affected regardless of where we sit in the organization. I am grateful for all of our Education teammates, past and present, whose contributions made our accomplishments to-date possible and carved our path forward.

A new report from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau looks at employer-driven debt. The report finds that employers are saddling workers with thousands in debt for training and supplies. On Thursday, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau released a report detailing the impact of training repayment agreement provisions, or TRAPs. The watchdog said it will continue to evaluate how companies are using TRAPs to determine whether they are violating consumer financial laws. "TRAPs impose significant financial burdens on workers and foster monopsony in labor markets by reducing worker mobility and bargaining power.

DoorDash will begin offering its delivery drivers hourly pay, the company said Wednesday, to help make sure workers have a better sense of how much they’ll earn per shift. Previously, delivery workers were paid per delivery offer, an option which remains available. The hourly rate is calculated to be comparable to what workers would earn per delivery, the company noted. DoorDash is changing how delivery drivers get paid. New York City recently announced a new minimum pay-rate for app food delivery workers.

McCarthy's refusal to meet with the Chamber is the latest strike in an ongoing feud between some House Republican members and the Chamber of Commerce. Tim Doyle, a spokesman for the Chamber of Commerce, told CNBC in a statement that the group's policies are more in line with House Republicans than Democrats. Representatives for House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., House Republican Conference Chair Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., and Rep. Gary Palmer, R-Ala., did not return requests for comment. McCarthy's ire against the Chamber started after the group endorsed 23 House Democrats in the 2020 election cycle when Republicans failed to regain the majority. The Chamber reportedly endorsed 23 House Republican candidates and four Democrats during the 2022 election fight.
Delta Air Lines plans to curb employee access to its plush and popular airport lounges next month, its latest attempt to ease crowding. "The employee discount on Delta Sky Club memberships also is discontinued," said the memo, which was seen by CNBC. Complimentary seats on planes are a major perk for airline staff, and they aren't just used for vacation. American and United say they aren't planning similar policy changes for their lounges, though carriers occasionally tweak employee travel policies. For example, those carriers paused certain employee travel perks to London over the summer due to congestion.

Many plaintiffs' firms pay somewhere in between. Despite more law firms increasingly paying their top earners like professional athletes, many law school grads only make between $50,000 and $80,000 a year. Things do appear to be changing as more plaintiffs firms seek to compete with Big Law firm talent. But firms like Edelson that pay as much as Big Law firms are the exception.
