Angry Birds Take on Drones at New York City Beach
  + stars: | 2024-07-13 | by ( Michael Levenson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
One is a distinctive shorebird, slightly smaller than an average sea gull, with a bright orange bill that pries open clams, oysters and other shellfish. The other is a remote-controlled gadget with rotating blades. In the skies above Rockaway Beach in Queens, bird and drone are not, it seems, coexisting in harmony. Just as New Yorkers flock to the beach to escape the sweltering summer heat, American Oystercatchers have taken to attacking a fleet of drones deployed by city officials to scan for sharks and swimmers in distress. The aerial conflict between animal and machine is raising concerns about the safety of the shorebirds, as they aggressively pursue the buzzing drones in defense of their nests, city officials and bird experts said.

As the weather warms up and we head into the homebuying season, high mortgage rates should keep home prices from rising too fast. Bottles of Coca-Cola are displayed in San Anselmo, California, on April 24, 2023. Coca-Cola on Tuesday posted quarterly earnings that met expectations and sales that topped estimates, as higher pries helped the beverage maker overcome a volume decline in North America. Coke reported fourth-quarter net income of 1.97 billion, or 46 cents per share, down from $2.03 billion, or 47 cents per share, a year earlier. Excluding items, the company earned 49 cents per share. Net sales rose 7% to $10.85 billion.

Aspects of the story are similar to the real-life scandal involving Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau. AdvertisementTodd Haynes' latest film "May December" is now streaming on Netflix, and its similarities to the real-life sexual abuse scandal between Mary Kay Letourneau and Vili Fualaau are evident. AdvertisementIn the years since the scandal, Letourneau had insisted that she was unaware that her and Fualaau's relationship was illegal. In a TV special that aired on A&E in 2018 titled "Mary Kay Letourneau: Autobiography," she said that there was "nothing going on at all when he was a student of mine." Supporting nonprofits on GivingTuesday this year could have a bigger impact than usual. Many nonprofits will run matching campaigns, meaning a supporter has pledged to double or sometimes triple the donation of other, smaller donors. That would follow the trend of charitable giving in 2022, which dropped for only the fourth time in 40 years. Other nonprofits, though, aim to rally support from the communities they seek to serve, and GivingTuesday can help with that. ___Associated Press coverage of philanthropy and non-profits receives support through the AP’s collaboration with The Conversation US, with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc.

U.S. oil output is expected to fall to 9.393 million barrels per day (bpd) in October from 9.433 million bpd in September, EIA data showed. A record 9.476 million bpd was hit in July. That's because U.S. exploration and production firms were still more focused on returning money to investors and paying down debt than just boosting oil and gas production. U.S. oil and gas production, however, is on track to reach record highs in 2023 and 2024 due in part to rising oil pries. Total gas output in the big shale basins will slip by 0.3 billion cubic feet per day (bcfd) to 98.4 bcfd in October from 98.7 bcfd in September, EIA projected.

Chilean scientists have warned of declining bee populations, threatened by agricultural pesticides and the impacts of climate change. "In this space we prepare for them, they can be free, live peacefully, without any aggressive interventions," he added. The S & P 500 never really got out of control back then — and, relative to bonds, it didn't either. The Fed chairman, correctly, feared the economy was going to crash, and he would have been right. I think that's certainly how people act. I think that most participants have decided there's no hope and they are using an analogue that's 2000-2001 (dot-com bubble bursting) or even 2007 (before the financial crisis and the Great Recession). Autos have been hurt by supply chain but I think that's coming to an end.
