In today's big story, we're looking at why the rise of "quiet vacationing" shows the depressing state of America's work culture . If you're unfamiliar with the distinction, let me introduce you to a new workplace phrase: quiet vacationing . But Business Insider's Emily Stewart argues workers feeling too stressed to fully take time off is a sad example of America's work culture. The irony is that quiet vacationing could arguably put you in a worse position for your job these days.

Gabriel Martinelli's late goal handed Arsenal a 1-0 win over defending champion Manchester City on Sunday, ending a 12-game losing streak in the league against Pep Guardiola's team in the process. City pipped Arsenal to the title by five points last term, in part by beating the Gunners 3-1 away and 4-1 at home. In fact, Arsenal had not taken a point against City in the league since 2017, its longest losing streak against a single opponent in club history. City as a team only had four shots in the game, its lowest total ever under Guardiola in a Premier League game. Newcastle was denied a fifth straight win in all competitions, including an 8-0 victory over Sheffield United in the league.

ZURICH, Aug 31 (Reuters) - Americans Noah Lyles and Sha'Carri Richardson cemented their status as fastest in the world this year with victories at the Weltklasse Diamond League meeting on Thursday. Kyron McMaster of the British Virgin Islands handed world record holder Karsten Warholm his first 400 hurdles loss this season, taking victory in 47.27 to edge the weary-looking world champion Norwegian who crossed in 47.30. The Olympic champion and twice reigning world champion failed on three attempts at 6.23 - what would have been the seventh time he has bettered the world record. Winfred Yavi of Bahrain passed world record holder Beatrice Chepkoech of Kenya with a lap remaining in a carbon copy of her world victory to win the women's 3,000 steeplechase. Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia won a men's 5,000 race in which Lamecha Girma, the world record holder in the 3,000 steeplechase, dropped out with two laps to go.

BUDAPEST, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway raced to victory in the 5,000 metres on the final day of the World Athletics Championships on Sunday, bouncing back from bitter disappointment in the 1,500m four days earlier. McLaren's Piastri had been on top of the timesheets until the final seconds when double world champion Verstappen went 0.11 quicker with a lap of one minute 49.056 seconds on a drying track. The standalone sprint format is being used at Spa for the first time, the third of six such events this season. Piastri said he "couldn’t have got much more out of that" and was happy to be on the front row. The provisional pole changed hands swiftly in the final shootout, with Hamilton fastest then Red Bull's Sergio Perez, Gasly, Sainz and Piastri before Verstappen's predictable final flourish. "It's good to get a clean end to qualifying," said Verstappen, with more rain forecast later.

The Q2 GDP number of +0.8% q/q just pipped forecasts, but y/y undershot at 6.3% suggesting revisions somewhere to the past. The market reaction was disgruntled with Chinese shares down and the yuan easing. The data underlined the need for much more serious fiscal spending but Beijing seems in no hurry to satiate market wishes this time. The central bank left one-year rates unchanged on Monday, and analysts seem resigned to wait for a Politburo meeting later this month for fresh steps. Goldman Sachs says passive funds that track NDX will rebalance their portfolios but the 2011 special rebalance experience suggests the stock-level impact will be limited.

Adam got the better of his identical twin to claim his first grand tour stage win, while his UAE Emirates team leader Tadej Pogacar finished third, also raising his arms in celebration. Adam was the stronger in the final uphill drag to prevail by four seconds, with Pogacar, who showed great legs in his first stage race since breaking a wrist in April, crossed the line 12 seconds off the pace. Overall, Yates leads his brother by eight seconds after picking up 10 seconds for the stage win, while Pogacar is 18 seconds off the pace. NEW DELHI, April 10 (Reuters) - Torrent Power (TOPO.NS) has pipped Reliance Industries (RELI.NS) to emerge as the lowest bidder for supply of 1,100-megawatts of gas-based power supply sought by the Indian government to meet anticipated record demand in the summer, two sources said. "The government is likely to award contracts for 1,100-megawatts to Torrent Power," one of the officials said. NTPC, Reliance Industries and Torrent Power did not reply immediately to Reuters' request for comment. NVVN Ltd, acting on the power ministry's directions, had invited bids for 5,000-megawatt power supply from gas-based power plants. However, about 24-gigawatts of its gas-based power generation capacity remains underutilised due to a lack of fuel.
In a moment of disarming honesty after his five-set win over Holger Rune, Rublev conceded he was not relishing the opportunity to face 21-times Grand Slam champion Djokovic on his favourite court. "No one wants to face Novak," Rublev blurted out with a laugh on Rod Laver Arena, albeit prematurely as Djokovic had yet to play his own fourth-round match. "He's an established top-five, top-10 player already for a few years," Djokovic said of Rublev, who has now reached a Grand Slam quarter-final seven times but never cracked the final four. The other men's match on Wednesday features unseeded Americans Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul, with both reaching their first Grand Slam quarter-final to continue the success of the U.S. men this year. Fifth seed Aryna Sabalenka has yet to drop a set in 2023 and will aim to reach her first Australian Open semi-final when she faces unseeded Croatian Donna Vekic.
"I think it probably goes back to 2018 in the World Cup. "As the tournament went on I felt like my performances maybe dipped in the latter stages. I was trying to make sure that, physically and mentally, I was in the best place for the knockout stages. I would love to be sitting here with two or three goals now, but I think the group stage has gone well. We know that they're African champions - very proud, great competitive spirit, a lot of belief in the team," Southgate added.
CNN —Liverpool FC’s owners are exploring the possible sale of the iconic English football club, according to The Athletic and The New York Times. Mo Salah celebrates scoring his second goal in Liverpool's 2-1 Premier League win against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday. “FSG has frequently received expressions of interest from third parties seeking to become shareholders in Liverpool,” added the statement. “FSG has said before that under the right terms and conditions we would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club. This season, Liverpool is well off the pace in the Premier League title race and will face Real Madrid in the last-16 stage of the Champions League.
The Bank of England said it will buy as much as £5 billion ($5.4 billion) a day of long-dated government bonds until Oct. 14. For one, this re-stimulation will lift, not quell UK inflation, and that's bad for bonds and sterling." The mood gave pause to the U.S. dollar's march higher and the dollar index had its worst session in 2-1/2 years as the greenback recoiled from lofty heights.
