On Saturday afternoon I drove out to eastern Pennsylvania, one of the big battlegrounds between President Biden and Donald Trump in this election, to attend Mr. Trump’s final rally before his criminal trial starts Monday. I was curious about the mood of Trump voters as this historic case gets underway. Instead, I found young women in sequins, older ladies in tutus, men sporting all manner of red-white-and-blue combos, and most everyone reveling in MAGA fellowship. It felt a little like the Whos down in Whoville gathering to sing after the Grinch stole Christmas. I didn’t run across anyone sweating the trial.

As companies everywhere ask more and more customers to tip, workers who rely solely on tips to earn a liveable wage have gotten creative. However, she was able to find success and earn higher tips after she started recording her wholesome interactions with passengers. During that time, Rodriguez told BI she'd give away free desserts to earn higher tips. "This strategy works by going online on both platforms and accepting any delivery that pays $7 minimum and at least $1 per mile," he told BI. "The difference in tips with a red lip was wild," Hepner told BI. "

Sleater-Kinney’s 10 (or Actually 11) Best Songs
  + stars: | 2024-01-19 | by ( Lindsay Zoladz | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Dear listeners,I first heard the band Sleater-Kinney when I was a teenager, and it’s not an exaggeration to say it changed my life. The drummer, Janet Weiss, played harder than pretty much anyone I’d ever seen, of any gender, and she sometimes wore pigtails. I still believe that Sleater-Kinney’s two-decade, eight-album stretch from 1995 to 2015 ranks among the strongest runs ever by an American band. But its last three albums, released since Weiss left the group, have largely left me cold. But I’d be lying, or blindly stanning, if I said I rank this new album with the band’s best work.

Reidun had been a teacher for a long time — I knew this because she'd once taught my mother. Our teacher stayed with us every year, a practice called 'looping'Reidun — as with all our teachers, we called her by her first name — was our "klasseforstander" or class principal. In third grade, we got a new teacher who taught us English one word at a time. Having your teacher follow you as you move through school is called "looping." Looping has been proven to help struggling studentsLooping is especially beneficial for students who struggle academically.

CNN —Taylor Swift fans have famously worn and traded personalized friendship bracelets, typically featuring the names of her songs and albums, throughout the US-leg of her “Eras” tour. As a result, some Etsy shop owners who focus on making friendship bracelets have brought in thousands of dollars. Rodrigo Oropeza/AFP/Getty ImagesFor Aimee Papson, however, selling Taylor Swift friendship bracelets is part necessity. Similar to the other Etsy shop owners, she put her leftover friendship bracelets online and earned about $1,800 so far. “I put a headlamp on at night, listen to Taylor Swift music and can make bracelets for almost eight hours straight.

It's common to stress over when we should tip and how much to tip, especially in America, where tipping is often expected for certain services. Social pressure is one of the common reasons we tip, according to social psychologist and tipping expert Michael Lynn. Customers might tip a server more if they smile, maintain eye contact, or stand physically close to the customer. "When they squat down next to the table, they're on the same eye level as the customer," Lynn said. "And the greater the social connection between the server and the customer, the better the tip the server's going to get," Lynn said.

One Morning in Maine, 225 People Went to the Library
  + stars: | 2023-08-25 | by ( Elisabeth Egan | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
It was a beach day, by Maine standards — slightly overcast and moderately balmy, with a hint of balsam in the air. But on a peak-summer morning in July, 225 people steered clear of state parks and went to Curtis Memorial Library in Brunswick instead. They were young and old, in strollers and on walkers and strutting the latest technical sandals. They wore pigtails, baby slings, ironic T-shirts, a head scarf, a lobster hat, a crown, a tiara and halos of white hair. As “Sal” McCloskey, now 78, settled into an armchair at the front of Morrell Reading Room, a hush fell over the undulating sea of children at her feet.

The 46-year-old mother said she sold over 5,000 Taylor Swift-themed friendship bracelets on her Etsy shop this summer, bringing in about $16,000 in sales. She is part of a group of Etsy shop owners who are selling Swift-themed bracelets for serious cash. Her daughter suggested listing them on her Etsy shop, which typically sells hairbows and headbands for babies and toddlers. “I will continue to make them as long as people want them.”Jamie Thompkins has sold more than 5,000 friendship bracelets to Taylor Swift concertgoers. Similar to the other Etsy shop owners, Papson put her leftover friendship bracelets online and has earned about $1800 so far.

By her early 30s she had earned a law degree from Harvard, an M.F.A. from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and a PEN/Hemingway Award for her lauded debut novel, “The Grass Dancer.” Then Mona Susan Power’s world went dark. But depression, anxiety, and what she would later learn to identify as complex P.T.S.D. led her to withdraw almost completely from a life she felt increasingly ill-equipped to handle in the wake of “The Grass Dancer’s” success. If you’re not prepared for it, if you don’t really believe that you deserve it … the whole impostor syndrome thing, it just got worse.

IT TOOK Kirstie-Anne Woodman a month and a half to master the claw clip. “I tried to do [my hair] the way women with [finer hair] hair do it—just kind of twist and then flip up—and it wasn’t working,” said Woodman, who is Black. “I take my hair and split it in two like I’m doing pigtails,” she said. Next, “I twist the two strands together, flip it up and start wrapping it like a bun. Then the claw clip will go straight in the middle and the ends will go up and over the back.”

When I went to my next shift at Olive Garden, I decided to give away free dessertIt was pretty easy to do. There were instances where managers would give away free desserts or bottles of wine to unsatisfied guests so it felt normal. I never told anyone I was giving away free desserts, and no one ever figured it out. It's pretty basic: look good, feel good. Editor's note: Olive Garden had not responded to a request for comment as of time of publication.

‘Past Lives’ Review: Longing for a Future
  + stars: | 2023-06-01 | by ( Manohla Dargis | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
“Past Lives” is a wistful what-if story about two people, the children they were and the adults they become. The movie follows them through the years and across assorted reunions, separations and continents as well as milestones momentous and ordinary. “Past Lives” centers on Nora (played as an adult by a terrific and subtle Greta Lee) and a boy named Hae Sung (Teo Yoo), though mostly it’s about her. They’re charming — they’re children — and close. Hae Sung comforts her because he’s a nice boy; he will become a nice man, but by then she will be long gone.

Hannah Pemberton, a server in Ohio, uses the viral "pigtail theory" to get more tips at work. "I should be tipped based on the fact that I'm a great server, but that's not how it is," she says. I've noticed that braiding the pigtails makes my tips climb even higher, so now I do that. I've noticed people tip the most when I'm wearing light makeup, so I do that even though I like wearing bolder makeup when I'm not working. The truth is I should be tipped based on the fact that I'm a great server, but that's not how it is.
Big Bow Energy: Fashion’s Latest Power Statement

TURN OF THE TIED From left: power bows at Louis Vuitton’s spring 2023 show, Acne Studios’s spring 2023 show and on Simone Rocha’s fall 2023 runway. Look to the red satin bows that drenched diaphanous black dresses on London designer Simone Rocha’s latest runway. Big black bows playfully obscured models’ torsos at Acne Studios’s spring 2023 show. And during its latest Paris presentation, Japanese brand Noir Kei Ninomiya used sparkly pink or black loops to adorn harnesses that evoked bondage. Designer Kei Ninomiya said he’s intrigued by the way bows “represent something positive, as well as the variety of shapes and expressions that they can convey.” Feel-good harnesses, anyone?
I saw people talking about the "red nail theory," which is basically that if you have red nails, men are drawn to you because red is a sexy color that symbolizes desire. I've heard about "red lipstick theory," which is the same as red nail theory but with lipstick. I've even thought about combining the red lipstick, red nails, and pigtails, but I haven't done it yet. But on the other hand, it really makes me uncomfortableLike, the red nails and lips are one thing. I don't wear pigtails to every shift and I don't always get my nails done red, because I don't live to please men.
Then she tried putting her hair in pigtails to get higher tips from male customers — and it worked. I was making so little money because the minimum wage in Utah for tipped employees is $2.13 an hour. In it, women realized that if they wore their hair in pigtails, they made more money in tips. I think it plays into a fantasy men have of schoolgirls and the innocence they think comes along with that. You might get weird comments from men or some negativity from women, but you'll get higher tips.

I've thought about why me and so many other waitresses have found such success in wearing pigtails to work, and it kind of grosses me out. If you're flirty and bubbly and wearing pigtails, they really like it. The comments I get while wearing pigtails do make me feel weirdI mean, I know everyone has their own fetishes, and I don't want to judge them.
