All trains between New York and Philadelphia were suspended on Wednesday evening because of fallen electrical wires that power the trains at Pennsylvania Station, according to Amtrak. The power outage stopped Amtrak and New Jersey Transit trains, an Amtrak spokesman, Jason Abrams, said in an email. The power outage started at 5:05 p.m., Mr. Abrams said, adding that crews were working to restore power. Riders on New Jersey Transit will have their tickets and passes honored on PATH trains, which are running between Manhattan and New Jersey, according to a spokesman for New Jersey Transit. To avoid Penn Station, travelers also may take a ferry to Hoboken, where six New Jersey Transit lines offer service.

Why OpenAI should fear a Scarlett Johansson lawsuit
  + stars: | 2024-05-22 | by ( Brian Fung | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +11 min
“It doesn’t matter if OpenAI used any of Scarlett Johansson’s actual voice samples,” Li posted on Threads. Here, Johansson could accuse OpenAI of illegally monetizing who she is by essentially fooling users into thinking she had voiced Sky. But there’s substantial case law — and one very inconvenient fact for OpenAI — undercutting that defense, legal experts say. According to Johansson, OpenAI approached her to perform as Sky; Johansson declined. While California’s publicity law protects all individuals, some state statutes only protect famous people, and not all states have such legislation on the books.

Investors hunting for income ought to look to small-cap stocks for a few high-quality dividend payers, according to Bank of America. There are names within it that offer quality dividend yields, according to Jill Carey Hall, equity strategist at Bank of America, in a Monday research report. Further, once the Federal Reserve begins cutting rates, yields paid on cash will fall, and that will make these dividend payers even more attractive for income. Finally, Bank of America added Essential Properties Realty Trust to its list of buy-rated dividend payers. The stock has a dividend yield of 4.2%, and shares are up 7.5% in 2024.

When voters turned out in February to fill a vacant seat in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives, the stakes were nothing less than control of the chamber, which Democrats held by a single seat. But as Election Day dawned, a nor’easter dumped several inches of snow, stranding would-be voters at home. Bad luck dogged others: One woman backing Ms. Cabanas skipped the polls after she fell ill and was rushed to the hospital. Ms. Cabanas’s Democratic opponent faced similar hurdles but had one advantage: More than 3,300 of his voters had mailed in their ballots early. Ms. Cabanas could count only 532.

WASHINGTON — The first Trump presidency shattered conservative economic ideology on the Republican Party's approach to free markets and tariffs. Source: AmericanCompass.org To be clear, this is not yet the dominant strain of Republican economic thinking in Washington. Cass argues that Republican economic policy has been focused on the wrong goals: lowering prices and increasing consumption. "It was absolutely black letter economic doctrine that the point of economic policy was to consume as much as possible. watch now"Spinning assets in circles creates nothing of value, and in fact creates the opposite of value," Cass said.

So it goes for Menendez, who is likely pleased to have his legal drama playing out in relative obscurity. More recently, Fetterman mocked the senator’s defense, which relies in part on pointing the finger of blame on Nadine Menendez, his wife. Republicans in Washington, as they’ve done during these first two weeks of the Menendez trial in New York, have been consistently deferential to the New Jersey Democrat. Rep. Andy Kim, a popular Democrat from South Jersey, is expected to win the nomination to succeed Menendez. Andrew Giuliani, pressed for a thought on the senator’s trial or the allegations against him, shrugged.

An unequal distribution of wealth in the U.S. can make it so some children are behind from birth. Now lawmakers are considering whether federal children's savings accounts can help. One proposal — the 401Kids Savings Act — would create savings accounts for all newborns. On June 8, 1931, Alexander McClay Williams, a 16-year-old Black student, was executed by electric chair, the youngest person to be put to death in Pennsylvania history. Months earlier, Alexander had been convicted of murdering a 34-year-old white woman, Vida Robare, a matron at the reform school outside Philadelphia that Williams attended. There were no witnesses to the murder, and evidence that might have cleared Alexander was kept from the jury by prosecutors. For almost four decades, Sam Lemon, a great-grandson of William Ridley, Alexander’s lawyer, worked to reveal that Williams had not committed the crime, and was the victim of gross prosecutorial misconduct by Delaware County, Pa.A judge overturned the conviction in 2022 and granted a motion for a retrial. Jack Stollsteimer, the Delaware County district attorney, moved to dismiss the charges posthumously, acknowledging yet another example of a Black person being wrongfully convicted of a crime they hadn’t committed.

Wendy's will offer a $3 breakfast combination meal starting Monday, as restaurant chains look for new ways to drive sales while consumers pull back on dining out. Last week, CNBC reported the fast-food giant's $5 meal deal would be available in stores for only a month, starting June 25. Wendy's earlier this month reported first-quarter revenue grew a modest 1.1% to $534.8 million. Although higher prices have helped the chain's revenue, they have scared away some low-income customers.

"Consumers continue to be even more discriminating with every dollar that they spend as they faced elevated prices in their day-to-day spending," McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski said on the company's conference call in late April. Paul Weaver | SOPA Images | Getty ImagesFor more than two years, consumers have dealt with sharply rising prices. But that doesn't mean the actual prices seen on grocery store shelves or restaurant menus will fall, and shoppers are feeling that pinch. While some CEOs have said that consumers are growing more cautious, others — like those in the airline industry — have celebrated strong and persistent spending. Corporate misfires can also lead to disappointing sales, even if their shoppers aren't necessarily pulling back on their spending.

A Pennsylvania teenager had to be resuscitated in March when he went into cardiac arrest after drinking Panera Bread's highly caffeinated Charged Lemonade, a lawsuit says. His ordeal was first reported by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette several days before Panera announced it was discontinuing its Charged Lemonade. Charged Lemonade contains caffeine from multiple sources, including the stimulant guarana extract. Previously, it had advertised its Charged Lemonade as "Plant-based and Clean" with as much caffeine as its dark roast coffee. Some universities have reached agreements with on-campus demonstrators, while others have cited safety concerns and canceled, postponed or relocated their schoolwide ceremonies. Positive signs for DemocratsBut is the race for the Senate really over if Republicans just win West Virginia? Democratic Senate candidates seem to be at least tied or ahead in Arizona, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. Of course, Democratic Senate candidates outrunning the top of the ticket is nothing new. For Democrats to have any chance of holding the Senate, Republicans would have to lose all these Senate races.

In Atlanta on Sunday, President Biden will deliver the commencement address at Morehouse College, an all-male historically Black institution. And in Detroit the same day, he is expected to speak at an N.A.A.C.P. But as Mr. Biden and his team intensify their efforts to engage Black voters, evidence keeps emerging that he faces serious challenges among that politically powerful, heavily Democratic group of Americans, threatening his ability to resurrect his victorious 2020 coalition. In interviews with nearly two dozen voters in predominantly Black neighborhoods in Philadelphia this week, as well as with elected officials and strategists, signs of softness in Mr. Biden’s standing were palpable.
