Laws in three states have enacted tougher restrictions for people who help voters with disabilities, language or other issues cast their ballots. Latino groups who have sued Texas, Arkansas and Missouri over these laws are warning that those who need help to vote in November’s elections may not get the assistance they need. “Many Latino voters have disabilities or English is not their first language. “We have to remember that the number of Latino voters who participated in 2020 was higher than the number needed to tip the presidential election results. According to data from the Pew Research Center, in Arkansas there are approximately 83,000 Latino voters who are eligible to participate in elections; in Missouri's case, it's 125,000.

New York CNN —Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, the powerful longtime leader of Mexico’s Sinaloa drug cartel, is scheduled to be arraigned Friday in New York on a 17-count indictment accusing him of narcotics trafficking and murder. Zambada later said in a letter that he was forcibly kidnapped in Mexico and brought to the US by Guzmán López, the son of the imprisoned Sinaloa co-founder Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. If convicted on all charges, Zambada, 76, faces a minimum sentence of life in prison and would be eligible for the death penalty. It remains unclear why Guzmán López surrendered to US authorities and brought Zambada with him. The report examined Americans who have identified as nonprofit workers on the Census' American Community Survey, including many employees in healthcare, educational services, and social assistance. Such outdoor workers include lifeguards, transportation employees, ironworkers, agricultural workers and letter carriers. States like California, Colorado, Minnesota and Washington, have some heat protections for workers but they are not uniform or sweeping. For example, Minnesota’s protections only apply to indoor workers while California’s heat protections include both indoor and outdoor workers. The government must implement wage protections alongside heat protections, said Dr. Kristina Dahl, a principal climate scientist at the Union of Concerned Scientists.

In the thick of the pandemic I moved back to El Paso, Texas, on the U.S.-Mexico border, where I’d been raised, for what I thought would be a temporary stay. I found myself being more discreet around my family in El Paso and Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, where I was born. My favorite songs to sing were those by the iconic Mexican showman Juan Gabriel. Juan Gabriel’s tender femininity was a radical quality in a Mexico entrenched in machismo and homophobia. He managed to embody his Mexican roots while also exuding queerness — two ideas that were for so long at odds in our culture.

In response to the El Paso mass shooting, MALDEF created a new program to expand its litigation and advocacy work to include anti-Latino hate crimes, including discriminatory policing policies. America’s Voice, an immigrant advocacy group, has been tracking what it calls the normalization of the invasion and great replacement rhetoric by congressional members. The report found that more than half of the top 20 major cities offering the most space for that amount are in the Southeast and Southwest. CNN —Joaquín Guzmán López, the son of the former Sinaloa cartel boss Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, is set to appear in federal court in Chicago Tuesday, just days after he was taken into American custody in a stunning arrest full of international betrayal and intrigue. The court appearance comes after Guzmán López, 38, and Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, the cartel’s alleged co-founder, were arrested Thursday by US authorities in El Paso, Texas. US law enforcement officials told CNN the arrest came after Guzmán López duped Zambada and orchestrated their arrest. “Joaquín Guzmán López forcibly kidnapped my client. It sounded like a story ripped from a narco thriller: One of the biggest drug lords in Mexico was lured onto an airplane, flown across the border and presented to American federal agents by the son of his former partner in crime. As improbable as it may seem, that is exactly what appears to have happened on Thursday evening, when a Beechcraft King Air turboprop landed at a small municipal airport outside El Paso, and off stepped one of the most wanted men in Mexico: Ismael Zambada García, a founder of the notorious Sinaloa drug cartel. Mr. Zambada García, known as El Mayo, had for decades evaded capture by both Mexican and American officials, living a life of luxurious simplicity in the mountains of Sinaloa — despite the $15 million U.S. bounty on his head. But in the end, U.S. officials said, he was betrayed by an unlikely foe: a son of his closest criminal ally, Joaquín Guzmán Loera, the infamous drug lord known as El Chapo, who is now serving a life sentence in an American federal prison.
