Then again — how could I miss my own first day of school as an educator? As an educator myself, I remember bonding with certain parent volunteers who would share information about kids. My relationship with her was on a great foot, and for the first time, it didn't matter so much that I didn't get to meet my kids' teacher for the first few months of school.

I've also started "quiet vacationing," which is when your employer is under the impression you're working but you're secretly taking time off. Although I've considered leaving my job, I'm in a golden cage. Because I spend a lot of time doing nothing, I started quietly taking time off for travel without taking PTO over the past two years. Why are we having regulations about the hours that I'm online or where I'm working from? The world can't function if no one has a job, but your job doesn't need to be your entire life.

In 2023, according to data compiled by Workday, companies across every industry promoted fewer employees than they did the previous year. The cutbacks were especially stark in tech, where promotion rates plunged by 25%. Yes, high interest rates and slower economic growth means that companies are being forced to tighten their belts. Related storiesEven when the job market begins to heat up again, we may not see promotion rates recover to 2022 levels for some time — or ever. Companies need to remember that even though employees can't afford to quit their jobs in the current hiring slump, they can still quiet quit.

We all know, or perhaps have been, that colleague who vents to their co-workers about how stressed they are. People who brag about their stress levels at work are seen as 'less competent and less warm' by their peers, researchers found. This is because they can seem out-of-touch with their colleagues, says Jennifer Gunsaullus, a sociologist and relationship expert. "It feels self-absorbed," Gunsaullus says. That's not someone who feels likable or warm, somebody we want to be spending more time with."

As a low-income, first-generation college student from West Virginia, this felt like an unparalleled opportunity to see the world. Huang, who oversees 50 direct reports, said that "by definition," CEOs should have the most direct reports of anyone at a company. And taking on more direct reports could help CEOs level the playing field, too. And while Huang manages more people than other big-name CEOs (Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has 16 direct reports), Nvidia has close to 30,000 employees, according to a company report from 2023. While Huang might be an outlier (and overachiever) as a manager, the number of direct reports CEOs are taking on is on the rise. CEOs' direct reports doubled from five in the mid-1980s to close to 10 in the mid-2000s, according to the Harvard Business Review.

Hopping from one mid-six-figure salary job in Big Tech to the next? More tech workers get laid offOver the last 18 months, tech workers say it's felt difficult to stay employed as round after round of layoffs have swept Big Tech and the broader industry. The tech job market got tougherTo add insult to injury, keeping a job in tech isn’t the only thing that’s more difficult. Aline Lerner, a former tech engineer and founder of interviewing.io, a site for tech recruiting and mock interviewing for tech job seekers, said it's now much more difficult to land a tech job, particularly at a high-profile or Big Tech company. “Anecdotally, I’d say it’s the hardest it’s been to get a tech job since probably the dot-com bust," Lerner said.

Opinion: ‘Boysober’ comes with some baggage
  + stars: | 2024-02-08 | by ( Opinion Holly Thomas | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
Are you sure you’re doing the right thing? Whereas “self-partnered’ connotes a vague but cheerful sense of romantic self-care, “boysober” very obviously comes with baggage. To get painfully literal about it: The existence of “boysober” implies the existence of “boydrunk.” Going boysober, one can therefore assume, isn’t just about celibacy or a break from dating. Woodard gets into this in a YouTube video she’s posted ahead of a podcast series on her boysober project. Even if you’re not wholly sure what you’re doing, claiming some agency over that process is reassuring.

Side hustles may actually make employees better at their full time jobs, a 2021 study found. "They can have these positive, enriching experiences that carry forward into their full-time work," he said. "They can have these positive, enriching experiences that carry forward into their full-time work," Sessions told podcast producer Charlotte Gartenberg of side hustlers. The perception of side gigs and those who have them has shifted in recent decades, Sessions told As We Work. "So when I say it can help your job, it will help your job to the extent that you can feel empowered by it," Sessions told the Journal.

James Walker III has acquired $1 million in real estate properties at 26 years old. Four years ago, he used with an $18,000 loan to buy his first FHA property for $350,000. "So you see that genesis of both real estate and entrepreneurship coming in my formative years through seeing my parents really go big in real estate," he said. With an FHA loan, the property must be the borrower's primary residence for at least a year. You build this up foundationally and you set yourself up for the day where real estate surpasses your primary income."
A report from data analytics firm Trilliant Health found that nationally, prescriptions for Adderall among people ages 22 to 44 increased 15% between 2020 and 2021. “I’ve had patients call 10,15, 20 pharmacies in order to get their medication,” Goodman said. Clara is headed to her doctor to seek an alternative medication until Adderall is back in stock. It took five days for his pharmacy to fill his prescription in late October, and those days took a toll. Goodman strongly warns against this, offering a reminder that not only is selling your own prescription medication a felony, so is sharing it with others.

Today, Justin is working the least he ever has: 40 hours a week. But what these executives are missing is that some employees don't want to pal around with their coworkers. In peak hustle culture, work was where we expected to find everything we needed to live the good life: joy, purpose, community. Then he started billing for 40 hours a week of labor that often took him only a few hours to complete. But after nine months of leaning back, a solid 40 hours is starting to look pretty attractive.
