Don't overlook the the financial sector as the stock market trends higher, according to Oakmark Funds portfolio manager and noted value investor BIll Nygren. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed above 40,000 for the first time on Friday, while both the Nasdaq Composite and S & P 500 entered Monday after four-week-long rallies. Despite the financial sector outperforming the broader market, banking and consumer finance stocks are cheaper compared to all S & P 500 companies, according to Nygren. The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) , which tracks the S & P 500 financials index, has returned 12.6% in 2024, including reinvested dividends, while the S & P 500 has returned less than 11.8%. U.K. stocks are finally turning a corner after years of underperformance, according to one chief investment officer, who stressed that valuations are looking "very cheap." The U.K. FTSE 100 is up around 11% over the last three months, while the broader FTSE 250 index is more than 9% higher. In comparison, the U.S.' S&P 500 is trading around 6% higher over the same period. Dell is seeing accelerating momentum, especially in winning business to build AI servers, unlocking a new bull case for the stock, Morgan Stanley analyst Erik Woodring wrote in a note on Wednesday. "All-in, we are hearing about more AI server momentum at Dell than at any other OEM," Woodring wrote, saying that he expected about $10 billion of AI server revenue in the company's fiscal 2025 — ending next February. Most AI servers are built around Nvidia's chips which have become prized in the technology industry because they are used to build and deploy advanced AI models from companies like Google , OpenAI and Meta . Dell sells servers using the newest Nvidia AI chips, including its H100 GPU and the latest Blackwell-generation chips. But the PC industry is on course to grow again and is outperforming lowered expectations, Woodring wrote, which will benefit Dell.

Traders at JPMorgan broke down how they expect stocks will react to Wednesday's report, with a focus on core CPI month over month, based on six different scenarios: 40% chance — The reading rises 0.3%-0.35%: This is the most likely outcome, per JPMorgan traders. S & P 500 moves could range between a 0.5% loss and a 1% gain. 10% chance — Core inflation climbs more than 0.4%: The S & P 500 would drop 1.75% to 2.5% under such a hot report, JPMorgan traders think. 7.5% chance — Core CPI gains 0.2%-0.25%: A decline in housing cost increases along with lower core goods prices could make this outcome possible. It would also send the S & P 500 up 1.5% to 2%, JPMorgan traders said.

JPMorgan laid out six scenarios for April CPI and how the stock market could react to each. The coming inflation report is set to market-shaking because it will help investors determine when the Federal Reserve might move forward with interest rate cuts. At the start of the year, the market was pricing in as many as seven interest rate cuts, but that has dwindled to just two rate cuts before year-end.

One investor says growth stocks still offer opportunities — but it's time to get selective. "Growth stocks will continue to outperform value stocks, generally speaking. Growth stocks are expected to grow rapidly, but do not pay out dividends and are often often more expensive than so-called value stocks. BlackRock added the U.S. Equity Factor Rotation ETF (DYNF) to its target allocation model portfolio in mid-March. Arone spoke with Before the Bell to outline three things about markets right now “that investors should know, but probably don’t.”1. You write that investors might be surprised to hear that small- and mid-cap stocks have outperformed large-cap stocks over the past five months. Why do you think that’s surprising, and what does it say about markets? Most investors think that the S&P 500 has been outperforming everything else, largely dragged up by the performance of the Magnificent 7 (Amazon, Tesla, Alphabet, Meta, Apple, Microsoft and Nvidia). The big beneficiaries of that, I think, would be a surprise for most investors — those mid-cap stocks and small-cap stocks.
