New York CNN —Red Lobster wants to close several dozen more restaurants following its bankruptcy, and it has identified which ones are in danger of shutting down if the court approves its plan. The chain, which brought affordable shrimp and lobster to middle-class America and grew to become the largest seafood restaurant chain in the world, filed for bankruptcy last month. Red Lobster said that it had more than $1 billion in debt and less than $30 million in cash on hand. Part of its plan is to close some locations of its nearly 600 restaurants in the meantime. A few weeks prior to its bankruptcy, it abruptly closed around 50 locations across the United States.

Shoppers exit Nordstrom at the King of Prussia Mall on December 11, 2022 in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. Nordstrom on Tuesday said sales slid by nearly 7% year over year, echoing other retailers' comments about weaker demand and budget-pressured consumers. Yet the department store operator reiterated its full-year sales outlook, saying it expects revenue to decline by between 4% and 6% versus a year ago, including retail sales and credit card revenues. Nordstrom is looking for growth after three straight years of sales that have been at or below pre-pandemic levels. As part of that push, the retailer has opened more of its off-price stores, Nordstrom Rack, and revamped merchandise in those stores to emphasize best-selling brands.

Google announced Thursday new artificial intelligence tools that can help you with holiday shopping. So, if you're shopping for a 4-year-old nephew this year, it can help you find ideas on what he might like with a command like "gifts for a 4-year-old who likes science." It's the first time that generative artificial intelligence is available in Google Shopping, and comes ahead of the holiday season which might attract people to use the site over other options. People can opt into the new options by going into Search Labs and turning on Search Generative Experiences (SGE.) So, if you wanted to search for a "puffy, colorful metallic-looking jacket" it might return results like the picture below:

Department stores' holiday season is "likely not going to be that strong," said David Swartz, a Morningstar analyst. Some are already slashing prices and dangling discounts to clear excess inventory before Black Friday, the start of holiday shopping season.

Customers order from a Chipotle restaurant at the King of Prussia Mall in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. The company did not share how much menu prices will rise as a result of the decision. The burrito chain started hiking its menu prices in June 2021, citing the cost of rising wages for its employees. But Chipotle paused its price hikes as some customers pulled back on restaurant spending and ingredient costs stabilized. Three months later, Niccol said Chipotle would reconsider its pricing as the company's fourth quarter drew closer.

The banking sector in Europe is still reeling after Italy unexpectedly approved a 40% windfall tax, although authorities added in a statement on Tuesday that the new tax could not breach 0.1% of a lender's total assets. European markets will be on guard for similar moves in other countries. Eyes are turning to the fast-approaching U.S. inflation report after mostly dovish comments from several Fed officials this week. Dutch supermarket chain Ahold Delhaize (AD.AS) and Germany-based E.ON (EONGn.DE), Europe's largest energy company, also announce earnings.

The answer is: The last battle of America’s war of independence was fought on this continent. DuVal and others say two key protagonists of the Revolutionary War – Britain and France – actually fought the final battle of the conflict in Cuddalore, India, in June of 1783. Britain and, to a lesser extent, France were well established with colonies in India when the American Revolution began and had already brought their hostilities from Europe to the subcontinent, according to the Museum of the American Revolution in Philadelphia. “They brought news that six months before in Paris, the British, French and the Americans – the Dutch were a little later – signed the Treaty of Paris ending the American Revolution,” he says. “Cuddalore, India, was indeed the last battle of the American Revolution.”

We're buying 350 shares of Foot Locker (FL), at roughly $40.43 apiece. Following Monday's trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will own 700 shares of FL, increasing its weighting in the portfolio to 1.06% from 0.53%. There hasn't been a lot of news around Foot Locker dating back to our initial buy in March , with the exception of one key data point. In late March, CEO Mary Dillon disclosed she purchased roughly $500,000 worth of Foot Locker stock , at $39.74 a share — bolstering our confidence in the company's turnaround strategy. Dillon joined Foot Locker last year after a very successful run as CEO of Ulta Beauty (ULTA).

Now, major retailers are dusting off their playbook for a recession — or at least for a period of slower sales. Target shoppers can soon get a Starbucks coffee, make a return and retrieve an online purchases without leaving their cars. Some retailers are rethinking their approach to discounts while questioning other costs, such as giving away free shipping or deliveries without strings attached. Some retailers have also turned free shipping into a perk for only engaged or higher spending customers. Nike , for instance, offers free shipping for shoppers – if they share their personal data by joining its membership program.
Morning Bid: Elusive peaks

Unlike much of last year, the rates market is now inclined to believe the central bank on the direction of travel. And implied year-end rates are as high as 5.12% - almost half a point higher than where the current rate sits. Two-year Treasury yields hit a three-month high at 4.72% on Friday, with 10-year yields at 3-month peaks too - homing in on 4% for the first time since November. So as impressive as this week's stock market resilience had been to the new inflation and rates environment, it appears to be buckling again already. Key developments that may provide direction to U.S. markets later on Friday:* U.S. Jan import and export prices, leading indicator.
Shares of Nordstrom surged Friday morning following news that activist investor and meme stock maven Ryan Cohen bought a stake in the high-end department store company. The Journal said Cohen is now one of Nordstrom's top five nonfamily shareholders. Cohen, who founded pet retail and health site Chewy , is considered a champion of the meme stock crowd. He also triggered a brief rally in Bed Bath & Beyond last year before he ultimately dumped out of the stock. Bed Bath is expected to file for bankruptcy protection any day now.
