Even the highest of achievers can struggle with feelings of loneliness and unbearable sadness behind closed doors — a state that's commonly referred to as high-functioning depression. High-functioning depression isn't a clinical diagnosis, but the National Alliance on Mental Illness recognizes it as a term that can describe "anyone who is grappling with mental health issues while accomplishing their day-to-day tasks and upholding their responsibilities." Symptoms of high-functioning depression can present differently than the severe signs of major depressive disorder like diet changes, sleep disturbances, fatigue and feelings of hopelessness, says April Simpkins, mother of the late Miss USA winner Cheslie Kryst. "For some people like Cheslie, it can feel like [it's] normal to be in the state of feeling sadness or feeling loneliness. We spoke to Chase Cassine, a licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist, about managing symptoms of high-functioning depression.

But I still play pickup ball whenever I can, and recently I’ve been thinking about what it means for America in 2024. In a time when we’re divided by race and class and age, pickup ball cuts across those lines. Maybe this country would be a better place if it worked a little more like a pickup game. Opinion | Mixed News About Opioid Overdoses
  + stars: | 2024-06-01 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Preliminary federal data that reports a slight drop in annual opioid overdose deaths offers a small measure of hope. But it’s no cause for celebration, despite what The Morning newsletter (“Has Fentanyl Peaked?,” nytimes.com, May 21) appears to suggest. In 2023, law enforcement seized over 115 million pills that contained illicit fentanyl. The omnipresence of high-potency fentanyl and other synthetic opioids in our drug supply continues to drive unprecedented instances of drug poisoning in communities across the country. That’s why focusing intently on prevention and encouraging robust conversations with loved ones about the dangers of the drug supply remain key.

For more than a year, I had been dealing with my progressive hair loss and clamoring for some sort of control. I launched into the story of my hair loss journey, attempting to convey the stress and uncertainty that had defined the past year. I purchased a long brown human hair wig that initially looked natural in the shop lighting. I learned I had a lot to learn; there was a whole "wearing hair" subculture with special lingo that I knew nothing about. I accepted that I have hair loss and I'm aging, and one day, I'll look in the mirror, and it won't be just my hair that's changed.

Jodi Wellman, a positive psychology expert, was an executive leader for 17 years but realized that achieving the pinnacle of success wasn't bringing her any joy. She previously held executive positions at companies like The Sports Clubs of Canada and Bally Total Fitness. "I was probably at the end of what I could do with that company, my proverbial glass ceiling," she said. Wellman said her whole identity rested on her career, so the feelings of hopelessness and fear were intensified as a result. What she realized was that she had pinned all her hopes on finding meaning through work while overlooking every other aspect of her life.

CNN —As Australian women push for action on domestic violence – a problem described by the country’s prime minister as a “national crisis” – one state has appointed a special official charged with improving men’s behavior. Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan announced Wednesday that state MP Tim Richardson would serve as the inaugural Parliamentary Secretary for Men’s Behavior Change – the first position of its kind in the country. Richardson said he would focus on the influence the internet and social media have on male attitudes towards women, and on building respectful relationships. Last year, 64 women were murdered, the group said. Women should not be responsible for ending violence against women,” he said at the time.

CNN —When you’re trying to address mental health symptoms, simply the belief that you can be helped may be an important factor. Symptoms of nine mental health disorders substantially improved under placebo treatment, according to a new review of 90 randomized controlled trials — known as a meta-analysis — totaling 9,985 adult participants largely in their 30s and 40s. “This is the most comprehensive study of placebo effects in psychiatry.”The results are also important for patient treatment, Bschor said. But for disorders that didn’t see as much improvement with placebos — such as OCD or schizophrenia, which is a psychotic disorder — medication may be more necessary. Improvement in absence of medicationThat mental health symptoms improved with placebo treatment may be due to a few potential influences, experts said.

Rising gasoline and shelter costs accounted for more than 70% of the monthly increase in overall inflation, according to the report. The American press, he writes in clear-eyed terms, “shouldn’t be neutral about upholding democracy” and must not “dispassionately observe our way to authoritarianism.”We spoke with Kristof over email for a Q&A about this and more. Dr. Kiers’s essay both shed light on the frustrating reality of the discrimination that mothers face in the world of academic research, and provided a shining beacon of hope to counteract it. Dr. Kiers has called this out; this is not actually a choice we have to make. Motherhood is not a detriment to our academic abilities and research contributions; it actually strengthens it in new and unexpected ways.

Traders fear that elevated rates will uphold painfully high borrowing costs for consumers, squeeze corporate profit and weigh down the market. The labor market has stayed strong, consumers have continued spending and stocks have notched repeated record highs. The April jobs report was a welcome sign that the labor market is cooling without cratering. The labor market added just 175,000 positions last month, marking its lowest tally since October 2023 and a sharp cooldown from the upwardly revised 315,000 jobs added in March. First-time applications for unemployment benefits climbed last week to 231,000, the highest level since last August, in another sign that the labor market is cooling.

An Israeli tank brigade seized control Tuesday of the Gaza Strip side of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, authorities said, moving forward with an offensive in the southern city even as cease-fire negotiations with Hamas remain on a knife's edge. The Israeli 401st Brigade entered the Rafah crossing early Tuesday morning, the Israeli military said, taking "operational control" of the crucial crossing. Footage released by the Israeli military showed a tank entering the crossing. The Israeli military claimed it seized the crossing after receiving intelligence it was "being used for terrorist purposes." Wael Abu Omar, a spokesman for the Palestinian Crossings Authority, acknowledged Israeli forces had seized the crossing and had closed the facility for the time being.

Within the course of mere days, hopes for a cease-fire in the Gaza Strip have been raised, dashed and raised again, with no clear explanation. Thursday, May 2A Hamas leader said that the group would soon send a delegation to Cairo to “complete ongoing discussions” on a cease-fire deal. Sunday, May 5The talks — which are held indirectly, through mediators — hit an impasse, and Hamas said its delegation had left Cairo. An Israeli official described the negotiations as in “crisis.”Late in the day, Hamas launched rockets at a border crossing between Gaza and Israel, killing four Israeli soldiers. Then it said would send a working-level delegation back to the talks in Cairo anyway.
