CNN —A few weeks ago, I gave the keynote speech at an inaugural conference on Black literacy exploring what the organizers called an “alarming literacy gap” between Black students and their peers. The White students even had their prom at the local country club while the Black students’ prom was held in the school gym. And since schools with high numbers of poor Black and Brown students tend to be drastically underfunded the correlation between poverty and lower academic achievement is hardly surprising. More than two-thirds attend schools in which only a minority of students are eligible for FRPL, schools where better funding and opportunities mean better outcomes. Research shows that integration raises the attainment levels of all students — not just those who are Black, Brown and poor.

That’s more student loan forgiveness than was granted under any other administration – in part due to the Biden administration’s efforts to temporarily expand some debt relief programs and to correct past administrative errors made to borrowers’ student loan accounts. Expanding debt relief program for public-sector workersNearly $51 billion of student loan debt has been canceled for 715,000 borrowers through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program since Biden took office. The PSLF program cancels outstanding federal student loan debt for public-sector workers who have made 120 qualifying monthly student loan payments, or about 10 years’ worth of payments. Nearly 513,000 borrowers with a total and permanent disability have received $11.7 billion in student loan forgiveness since 2021.

The Department of Education on Friday announced the next steps in its efforts to provide student debt forgiveness to federal borrowers. After the Supreme Court struck down President Joe Biden's plan to provide broad student loan forgiveness at the end of June, the administration got to work on a new plan to provide relief through the Higher Education Act. Currently, the administration is going through a process known as negotiated rulemaking to enact a debt forgiveness plan. Department of Education officials provided an update to members of the press on Friday announcing members of the Student Loan Debt Relief Committee who will discuss and finalize a debt forgiveness proposal in the coming months. It's still not clear who exactly may see their debt forgiven in the near future, but ED officials offered a glimpse at who they are focusing on first.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Top officials at a Florida school district ordered the removal of all books and material containing LBGTQ+ characters and themes from classrooms and campus libraries, saying that was needed to conform to a state law backed by Gov. The district later backed off a bit, allowing some exceptions for high school libraries.
