This painting, called “Canopy,” is from 2020. ):With yards:And she did it with plastic buckets — the painting you just spent some time with. She spent the whole first summer just trying to get the perspective on the tops of the buckets right — searching for the right ellipse shape — working them out in drawings and on the canvas. Near the end of our conversation, we asked Ms. Murphy why she still paints this way after all these years. Why deal with the dying grass, the ever-changing light, those impossible ellipses, morning after morning after morning?

The University of Tennessee is raising its season ticket prices by 10% across all its sports to prepare for athletes to start to get a cut of the school's sports revenue, according to an email sent to football season ticket holders on Tuesday. Tennessee is calling its hike a "talent fee," and said it "will help fund the proposed revenue share for our student-athletes," according to the email. Athletic departments have been gearing up for revenue sharing after a proposed settlement involving three cases the NCAA is named in. "As the collegiate model changes, we have to remain flexible," Tennessee Athletic Director Danny White said in a video included in the email. Star athletes have been able to sign big endorsement deals, but universities have not started direct revenue sharing, which would benefit more student-athletes.

When Google released its first Android smartphone in 2008, the company’s founders slid onstage in roller skates. On Tuesday, executives left the skates behind but kept to the tone of that pitch: Google crammed all the cutting-edge technology it could into the latest Pixel phones. Google is hoping the features will help the four new phones — including the Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and the double-wide Pixel 9 Fold — finally overcome consumer apathy to its smartphone ambitions. It is Google’s latest attempt to make a splash in a smartphone market dominated by its partner Samsung, as well as by Apple, which has already detailed the A.I. It has about 5 percent of the smartphone market in the United States, and generally less than that in other major markets, like Britain, Germany and India, according to Statista, which compiles data.

He was 23, and the recent deaths of his older brother and sister-in-law surely cast a pall on his state of mind. The Festival Orchestra of Lincoln Center will play Kendall’s piece on a program that also includes Schumann’s Second Symphony. What it takes to be an artist today, Kendall explained, is a regular topic of discussion among her circle of friends and peers. “Our well-being, mental and physical, is something that crops up on a daily basis,” she said. Some composers, like Julia Adolphe, Nico Muhly and Aaron Helgeson, have begun to air mental-health concerns and struggles in public, in blog posts and on podcasts.

How YouTube Took Over Our Television Screens

Two years ago, YouTube abandoned its audacious plan to beat Hollywood at its own game. So it canceled the shows and fell back on the user-created content that had made it a household name. Now, YouTube consistently ranks as the most popular streaming service on U.S. televisions, surpassing the companies it once tried to emulate. Since Netflix started offering original content in 2012, TV networks have jumped into the streaming race, trying to outflank one another with major upfront investments. Netflix alone spends $17 billion a year on new series and movies as well as on older fare from other companies’ libraries.

Last week, it looked like Google was poised to snap up the cybersecurity start-up Wiz for $23 billion, in what would have been its largest acquisition ever. The privately held company would instead pursue a public listing on a stock exchange, according to a memo viewed by The New York Times. Wiz would continue to pursue its previously stated goal of generating $1 billion in recurring revenue ahead of an initial public offering, Assaf Rappaport, Wiz’s chief executive, wrote in the memo. “While we are flattered by offers we have received, we have chosen to continue on our path to building Wiz,” he wrote. “Saying no to such humbling offers is tough, but with our exceptional team, I feel confident in making that choice.”

Google faced a setback on Monday when the cybersecurity start-up Wiz rejected its $23 billion acquisition offer, a deal that could have given momentum to its cloud-computing operations. On Tuesday, Google’s parent company Alphabet reminded investors that it’s doing just fine even without the deal. The tech giant reported strong revenue growth in its search advertising and cloud-computing businesses, raising its profit, though the increase in YouTube ad sales fell short of expectations. In the second quarter, Alphabet posted $84.7 billion in quarterly sales, up 14 percent from a year earlier and narrowly exceeding analysts’ estimate of $84.1 billion, according to data compiled by FactSet.

Companies like Google and OpenAI built their artificial intelligence chatbots and image generators by gobbling content from the web, spurring legal fights over copyright claims. Now, some of those copyright holders are trying to get in on the A.I. image generators with their own data, bypassing the legal worries that have shadowed the industry. While the largest tech companies have been locked in a dizzying A.I. race, visual media marketplaces, content creators and artists are pushing for licensing so that they can be paid for work that helps train A.I.

This is a healthy brain on psilocybin

It wasn’t until his brain morphed into a computer, however, that he knew for sure he was on a psychedelic trip. “We found that psilocybin desynchronizes the brain,” said co-senior author Ginger Nichols of the study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. “When psilocybin is on board, the brain is disconnecting from its typical pathways and reconnecting to different parts of the brain,” said Nichols, an associate professor of psychiatry at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. “Science doesn’t fully understand the brain yet, but I felt as if I suddenly knew exactly how the brain works. Sara Moser/Washington University School of MedicineA window for changeScans showed that in the days after the psilocybin trip, most brain networks returned to normal.

This Is Literally Your Brain on Drugs
  + stars: | 2024-07-17 | by ( Andrew Jacobs | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The image, as it happens, comes from dozens of brain scans produced by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis who gave psilocybin, the compound in “magic mushrooms,” to participants in a study before sending them into a functional M.R.I. The kaleidoscopic whirl of colors they recorded is essentially a heat map of brain changes, with the red, orange and yellow hues reflecting a significant departure from normal activity patterns. The blues and greens reflect normal brain activity that occurs in the so-called functional networks, the neural communication pathways that connect different regions of the brain. The scans, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, offer a rare glimpse into the wild neural storm associated with mind-altering drugs. “Psilocybin, in contrast to any other drug we’ve tested, has this massive effect on the whole brain that was pretty unexpected,” said Dr. Nico Dosenbach, a professor of neurology at Washington University and a senior author of the study.

This was, for the most part, a dismal England performance, regardless of the supernatural deliverance at the end. Everything that was bad about today in Gelsenkirchen had been signposted by England over the course of the last few weeks. The red flags had all been there since England opened their campaign in this same city two weeks ago. And yes, England are desperately flawed, still unbalanced, still uncertain on the ball, still struggling to create chances even when they dominate possession. None of the lingering questions over this England team have been solved.

If Austria wanted to have any chance of qualifying to the round of 16 they had to beat Poland in their second group game. The wide areas were where Ukraine focused their attacks, and Oleksandr Zinchenko’s square pass to Mykola Shaparenko made it 1-1 in the second half. However, Samet Akaydin and Altay Bayindir’s mishap on the second goal decreased Turkey’s probability of a comeback. Daniel Nico Laudit says he does not cry easily. He decided to test his mettle this month in a movie theater in Manila, and documented the experience for his 4.5 million followers on TikTok. “I went straight to the restroom after the movie because I wanted to cry out loud,” Mr. Laudit, 24, a content creator, said in a telephone interview. Reactions like Mr. Laudit’s have made the movie, which was filmed in Bangkok mostly in the Thai language, a runaway hit across Southeast Asia. In Indonesia, it has drawn millions of viewers.
