The maximalist martinis encapsulate the "loud luxury." Loud luxury, in contrast to quiet luxury, is about spending a lot and owning it. "Call it loud luxury," she wrote. Loud luxury, in contrast, isn't afraid to show off. It's not necessarily the logo that makes something loud luxury, but anything that stands out and signals "this is expensive."

Read previewThe news that Stanley's insulated stainless steel cups contain lead sparked a frenzy of concern on social media about the potential health risks for consumers. Stanley acknowledged in a statement that it uses "an industry standard pellet" that contains "some lead" to seal the vacuum insulation of its tumblers. We want to assure you that Hydro Flask does not use lead in our vacuum sealing process," HydroFlask said in a post on Threads earlier this week. Marketing experts told Business Insider this is a smart strategic move for companies seeking to differentiate themselves from Stanley and win over customers. And lead is still bad for manufacturing workers and the environment — it's just not a significant health risk for Stanley customers.

Sea otters eat constantly and one of their favorite snacks is the striped shore crab. Researchers found that the return of the crab-eating sea otters to a tidal estuary near Monterey, California, helped curb erosion. Hunting bans and habitat restoration efforts helped sea otters recover some of their former range. For the new study, researchers analyzed historic erosion rates dating back to the 1930s to assess the impact of sea otters' return. Other research has shown that sea otters help kelp forests regrow by controlling the number of sea urchins that munch kelp.

For the most part, the battle against cane toads has been mounted by local ecological warriors wearing rubber gloves who scan the streets for adult toads. But the Australians have a secret weapon not yet available worldwide – a lure that attracts cane toad tadpoles so thousands can be killed in one hit. To prove the theory, and try to mimic it, they’d first need a heap of dead cane toads. “In Florida, cane toads are mainly a socio-economic issue. Northern quolls – small carnivorous marsupials – get a cane toad sausage, goannas are fed tiny live toads and freshwater crocodiles receive cane toad legs with a dose of lithium chloride.

New-look Unilever retains its old-style opacity
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Unilever logo is displayed on Dove soap boxes in this illustration taken on January 17, 2022. Back in 2017 Unilever fought off a Kraft Heinz (KHC.O) takeover approach by pledging a 20% operating margin; now there just isn’t a target. But it leaves a question mark over Unilever’s long-term direction. And it might leave long-term critics like fund manager Terry Smith still griping about opacity. In January Smith complained that Unilever had revealed the price tag on only three of 27 acquisitions in its Beauty and Wellbeing division over eight years.

US growth boom tees up year-end bust
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The latest report on the country's growth is worth celebrating, but not for too long. Household incomes after inflation and taxes fell by $71 billion in the third quarter, according to Pantheon Macroeconomics. That shrank in the third quarter, with managers flagging peak interest rates as a larger concern, leaving less in the pipeline. Yet stores spent $81 billion in excess inventory last quarter and are likely to wait to restock shelves. Last quarter’s boom should give way to a bust.

EU’s best way to close its US growth gap: growth
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BRUSSELS, Oct 26 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The European Union would have a better chance of catching the U.S. if it aimed for growth, instead of rearranging the regulatory deck chairs. Lowering political barriers in the 27-country single market could boost investment without breaking the bank on subsidies, Jean-François van Boxmeer told Breakingviews, citing a new European Round Table for Industry report. In the telecommunications sector, the European Commission has kept four providers in most of the EU’s markets, and screens out Chinese equipment-makers over security concerns. The European Commission reckons completing the single market by 2030 would hike EU GDP by 12%, or 713 billion euros. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration Acquire Licensing RightsNEW YORK, Oct 23 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Roche (ROG.S) has taken a small step towards curing its drug pipeline problem. JPMorgan analysts estimate that the drug’s U.S. sales could peak at 2.4 billion Swiss francs ($2.7 billion), but will take until 2037 to get there, assuming a 2028 launch. Analysts expect Roche’s pharmaceutical division to generate revenue of almost 45 billion Swiss francs this year, according to estimates compiled by LSEG. With expected free cash flow of around 16 billion Swiss francs this year and next, Roche can afford to buy a little more diversification.

Merck’s cancer rush may spawn lower returns
  + stars: | 2023-10-20 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
The American drug company said on Thursday it signed a giant deal with Daiichi Sankyo (4568.T) for the rights to sell three potential drugs outside Japan. Merck will pay $4 billion upfront, up to another $1.5 billion over the next two years, and as much as $16.5 billion if the drugs pass certain sales milestones. Merck’s Keytruda accounts for about 40% of the company’s revenue, and that cancer drug might face cut-price competition before the end of the decade. The potential is giant, as these targeted therapies might eventually account for a quarter of the current oncology market. With over 100 of these drugs in clinical trials, the stampede might lead to lower-than-expected returns.

Rentokil may be next to nibble at US listing

REUTERS/Mike Blake Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Oct 19 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Rentokil (RTO.L) is an obvious contender to ditch its London listing in favour of the U.S. CEO Andy Ransom said that it is getting harder to win new business due to “the macroeconomic backdrop”. Rollins is valued on nearly 38 times its forward earnings, versus Rentokil which was trading on just 23 times before Thursday’s fall, according to LSEG data. With Rentokil shareholders a little ratty, Ransom may come under more pressure to consider ways of pepping up the stock, like ditching London in favour of the more highly valued U.S. market. Now you can nibble on crudités and shop for home furnishings at a roadside service plaza while you wait for your electric vehicle to recharge. The truck stops that keep Americans fueled, fed and refreshed along major highways are spending billions overhauling their stores to keep up with changing consumer behavior, particularly the growing popularity of electric vehicles. The changes continue to transform the modern truck stop, a slice of Americana that took off in the 1960s amid the expansion of the Interstate Highway System. Over the years, truck stops were often perceived as grimy — and occasionally seedy. Across the aisle, you’re likely to find purses and puzzles, as well as phone chargers and birdhouses.

The Plan to Boost GOP Primary Turnout

Prosecutors have put a political whirlpool in motion. Presidential candidates converged again this month on the Iowa State Fair to flip sizzling pork chops, nibble peculiar speared foods, and scout for undecided caucus-goers. Yet history suggests most Iowans, and even most Republicans, are more into the fair rides and butter sculptures than primary politics. In the November 2016 election, Iowa’s 2.4 million adults cast 1.6 million votes, 801,000 for Donald Trump. How many Iowans were counted in that year’s GOP caucus?

The goats have already saved the native forest of the Bosques de Chacay once, preventing the park from being consumed by February forest fires - fueled by heatwaves and a punishing drought - that left dozens dead, thousands injured and almost 440,000 hectares destroyed in south-central Chile. The technique, also used in Portugal and Spain, relies on grazing goats to control dry pastures and other vegetation that fuel forest fires in the summer. Cruces started the project after deadly wildfires in 2017. Her flock has since grown from 16 goats to 150 and she hopes to inspire others to follow suit. "These animals can help us a lot," Di Napoli said, adding that other organizations should "evaluate where it can be applied, find where there's fuel and have the goats eat it."
Axel Lehmann, chairman of Credit Suisse Group AG, left, and Colm Kelleher, chairman of UBS Group AG, during a news conference in Bern, Switzerland, on Sunday, March 19, 2023. "The accelerating loss of confidence and the escalation over the last few days have made it clear that Credit Suisse can no longer exist in its current form," Lehmann said. In equal parts "shotgun wedding" and arranged marriage, UBS agreed to buy stricken domestic rival Credit Suisse for 3 billion Swiss francs ($3.25 billion) on Sunday. The government will offer a loss guarantee of up to 9 billion Swiss francs, with UBS assuming the first 5 billion of potential losses. Shares of both UBS and Credit Suisse plunged on Monday morning, however.

Most analysts are expecting the stock to be driven by management's comments on Humira sales this year during the investor conference call. AbbVie's weak forecast suggests that Humira rivals could nibble away at the blockbuster drug's market share at a faster pace this year than analysts' projections. In the fourth quarter, Humira sales dropped 26.5% to $573 million in international markets such as Europe, where it already faces competition from multiple cheaper versions. Overall, Humira sales rose 4.6% to $5.58 billion, in line with estimates, lifted by growth in the U.S. market. Excluding items, AbbVie earned $3.60 per share in the fourth quarter, beating analysts' average estimates of $3.56 per share.

New York CNN Business —Most of 2022 has been pretty dismal for investors, and Monday was no exception: The Dow fell about 500 points, or 1.5%, Monday. The Dow enjoyed its best month in nearly a half-century in October and it’s up nearly another 3% in November. It would be a stunning comeback if the Dow reclaims all its lost ground and finishes the year in positive territory. Top industrial stocks in the Dow such as Boeing (BA), Caterpillar (CAT) and Honeywell (HON) have surged. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq are still pretty deep in the red for 2022, off 17% and almost 30% respectively.
