Just a 25-minute drive east from the city center is Gokarna Forest Resort, a five-star luxury retreat and golf course embedded within 470 acres of protected sanctuary jungle, sheltering a rich array of wildlife. Though a golf course had been present since 1999, the development saw it blossom into the undulating 6,755 yard, 18-hole setup that sits as the crown jewel of the resort today. “The uniqueness of the golf course is what really inspires me, and I have been to at least 200 or 250 golf courses around the world. It is commonplace to glimpse as many as 400 spotted and barking deer bounding across the course’s fairways on any given day, Acharya says. “That is a big challenge for the golf course and for me to maintain, because they run on the greens,” he said.

It was the annual Kukur Puja festival in Nepal on Thursday, and dogs across the nation were draped in marigold garlands, marked with celebratory vermillion pigment and presented with overflowing platters of treats. Like Diwali in India, the five-day Hindu festival of Tihar, being celebrated this week in Nepal, is a festival of lights. Unlike Diwali, Tihar includes the worship of creatures, and Kukur Puja, on its second day, is dedicated to dogs. According to Hindu mythology, dogs are the messengers of Yamaraj, the god of death. All dogs, including pets, strays and working dogs, are worshipped.

This month, Nima became the youngest person to summit all 14 of the world’s highest peaks, but the 18-year-old Nepalese mountaineer is already getting ready for his next big feat. His father, Tashi Lakpa Sherpa, has climbed Everest nine times, and at age 19 became the youngest person to summit without bottled oxygen. His uncle Mingma Sherpa became the first South Asian climber to summit the 14 peaks in 2011. Despite his record-breaking achievement, Nima’s climbs did not attract big-name sponsors, and he relied on his father’s 14 Peaks Expedition company for funds and logistical support. Dawa Yangzum Sherpa became the youngest Nepalese woman to climb the 14 peaks.

More than 90 flights from Indian airports have received bomb threats in just over a week, including about 50 on Saturday and Sunday alone, according to local media reports. Bomb threats against airlines are taken especially seriously in India, which was rattled by a series of bombings and hijackings from the 1970s to 1990s. Two days later, the British air force dispatched a fighter jet to intercept an Air India Boeing 777 en route to London. Air India said it would consider legal action against those responsible and was cooperating with the authorities to identify the perpetrators. Police in Mumbai have arrested one person on suspicion of posting bomb threats against at least three flights, Kinjarapu said Wednesday in a post on X.

Phnom Penh, Cambodia AP —Thirteen pregnant Philippine women accused of illegally acting as surrogate mothers in Cambodia after being recruited online may face prison terms after they give birth, a senior Interior Ministry official said Saturday. The law was updated in 2016 to ban commercial surrogacy after Cambodia became a popular destination for foreigners seeking women to give birth to their children. The surrogacy business boomed in Cambodia after it was put under tight restrictions in neighboring Thailand, as well as in India and Nepal. She said the seven Philippine women and four Vietnamese women who were caught in the raid but who were not pregnant would be deported soon. There had been no contact with the climbers, scaling the 8,167-meter (26,795-feet) peak without Sherpa guides, since Sunday night, when they reached a height of 7,700 meters (25,262 feet). "They might have been tied to the same rope," said Pemba, who goes by his first name. "One of them could have slipped on the slope and all five fell together." CNN —Five members of a Russian expedition who went missing while attempting to climb Mount Dhaulagiri have been found dead, Russia’s embassy in Nepal told CNN on Tuesday. Initial investigations suggested the group of Russian mountaineers died “as a result of falling down a slope,” the embassy said. Dhaulagiri – which translates from Sanskrit to mean “White Mountain” - is the world’s seventh-highest peak, standing 8,167 meters (26,795 ft) above sea level, in the Himalayas in central Nepal. The fatality rate of Dhaulagiri is slightly more than 16%, making it one of the most dangerous mountains to climb. The Russian Mountaineering Federation told CNN that the trip was organized by a private organization.

PHUKET, Thailand — Thailand’s landmark marriage equality bill has been endorsed by the monarchy, making it the first country in Southeast Asia and the third place in Asia to recognize same-sex marriage. It will take effect in 120 days, allowing LGBTQ couples to register their marriages starting Jan. 22. “Congratulations on everyone’s love,” Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said in a post on X that included the hashtag #LoveWins. Thailand, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia, is known for its tolerance and vibrant LGBTQ social scene, but it also retains conservative social values that made passing the law a yearslong struggle for activists.
