The author, Megan Bearce, and her husband, Ian, had just moved from Los Angeles to Minneapolis when he got a job offer in New York City in 2010. I heard this question so many times over the 10 years my husband, Ian, flew weekly from our home in Minneapolis to his job in New York City. Ian posted photos and art on the walls of the New York City apartments he stayed in during the week when he supercommuted from Minneapolis. Visits to New York City helped the kids get a glimpse of Ian's life during the week, Megan says. The logistics of multiple activities felt too overwhelming for me to handle with Ian away during the week.

For more than a week, I’ve been walking around my yard at night with a UV flashlight, looking for the white glow of cicada nymphs emerging from their exoskeletons. I walk around again in the morning looking for their spent shells clinging to a tree or a stalk of pokeweed. To think about periodic cicadas is necessarily to contemplate time. We nicknamed our newborn Cicada Joe, the baby who emerged into a sunny new world just as millions of cicadas were also emerging into brightness. As an ecosystem measures time — and also as a mother measures time — it all happened in a blink.

Dr. Norman Kansfield seemed to personify the Reformed Church in America. To an extraordinary extent, he had grown up in the world of his church’s 17th-century Dutch founders. So when his daughter, Ann Kansfield, was considering coming out of the closet to him, she was nervous. After she did, Dr. Kansfield went beyond responding with warm acceptance. Years later, in June 2004, he insisted that he officiate at her wedding, held in Massachusetts weeks after the state legalized same-sex marriage.

The Palestinian militant group has long called for the Jewish state to be destroyed. Basem Naim, an Istanbul-based member of Hamas’ political bureau, told CNN on Thursday that the group would agree to disarm if an independent Palestinian state was established. Hamas has traditionally rejected a two-state solution that would see a Palestinian state established alongside Israel and has instead advocated the creation of a Palestinian state in all of historic Palestine that today encompasses Israel, the occupied West Bank, occupied East Jerusalem and Gaza. Barghouti said Hamas indicated as far back as 2007, when it led a Palestinian national unity government, that it is willing to accept a Palestinian state along the 1967 borders. Last week, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said at a news conference in the Qatari capital Doha that Hamas is willing to function solely as a political party once a Palestinian state is created, citing meetings between the group and Turkish officials.

The volunteer black walnut sapling in our front yard arrived courtesy of a local squirrel. I had to mark it with a little flag to make sure my husband didn’t mow over it by accident. The baby Eastern red cedars and the baby black cherries and the baby red mulberries were all planted by birds. (The baby willow oak and the three baby shingle oaks that appeared two years ago have already fed the rabbits.) This black walnut won’t reach full maturity for another 150 years or so, and that’s if no one cuts it down — a bet I would not take.

CNN —Jennifer Crumbley, the mother of the teenager who killed four people at a Michigan high school in 2021, admitted under cross-examination at her manslaughter trial that she and her husband gifted their son the firearm later used in the attack. “We didn’t just hand him a gun as ‘here you go son,’” she testified. From 2011 to 2015, about 100,000 properties — more than a quarter of the Detroit lots — were auctioned in tax foreclosures, according to Regrid, a Detroit-based provider of parcel data nationally. (Speculators recently made money after the city bought out vacant lots to help revive an auto plant that would bring jobs to the area.) Mr. Allen said his main project at the agency was finding new ways to stimulate growth that didn’t rely on grants and tax breaks. After reading “Progress and Poverty” years earlier, he’d become obsessed with the problem of speculation, and suggested a land-value tax. A tax break for residents — paid for by nameless investors who are “taking advantage of the city” — would seem like a political layup.

The red king crab fishery was closed; the snow crab fishery cut to a tenth of the previous year's take. After another bad survey last year, the red king crab fishery closed again and the snow crab fishery closed for the first time ever. Kevin Abena, who runs a fishing business with his father, also relies on tendering to stay afloat in the wake of the crab fishery closure. Researchers this year brought samples of crab back to Kodiak for further analysis, exploring how snow crab respond to stress in their environment, including rising heat. After being placed on a PIP, he 'quiet quit' for 3 months before leaving in January. Within a couple of weeks I was assigned another project, which turned out to be the worst project I've ever worked on. I started warning leadership and my peers that it wasn't going to get doneI told them we needed way more resources if we were going to do it right. That harmed me as a director — I essentially became a really expensive business analyst who wasn't making any money for the firm. After being placed on my PIP, I realized this wasn't the job for me, but I needed to ride it out to make ends meet.

Changing Your Mind-SetAlthough many people worry that having a more ecologically responsible landscape means letting go of cherished plants — their peonies, perhaps, or roses — Ms. West and Mr. Rainer are quick to clarify. “It’s about letting things in,” Mr. Rainer said. Some users told the Journal they prefer Apple Maps over Google Maps for its design and usability. Rabinowitz mow finds that Apple Maps offers public transit directions that are faster and more creative than those from Google Maps, the Journal reported. Apple Maps, he said, also takes into consideration commuting disruptions like subway outages better than its competitor does. She has since begun choosing it over from Google Maps, as she says Apple Maps has a more clear and legible display. Google Maps, he said, might be better for those who want to use their personal data to inform what information gets displayed.

While time spent in a specific role may correlate with commitment, experience, or knowledge, it doesn't necessarily correlate with value to a company. To get a raise or promotion, you're going to need more than tenure — you're going to need to create additional value or increase your scope of work. In this case, the company is getting more value by paying more, but paying more doesn't always equate to more value. For many positions, it can be hard to determine if an experienced person is providing more value than a non-experienced person. The question that the company will ask is, does the hire salary cost outweigh the cost of hiring a new employee?

Reconsidering the Staycation

I’ve always been skeptical of the staycation. So I was intrigued to discover, thanks to my colleague Catherine Pearson, that I have been staycationing all wrong. Evidently, my tendency to stumble into time off without a plan is unlikely to produce a restorative effect. This weekend, you could, for instance, seek out some vegan ice cream that doesn’t taste terrible. You could try running in a pool, which is easier on the joints but as effective as running on land.

Federal worker safety inspections have alleged poor maintenance or a lack of safety training at some Tyson plants where ammonia leaks injured workers. CNN interviewed eleven current or former Tyson workers across three different plants who experienced ammonia leaks. !”A safety sign hangs on a fence at a Tyson plant in Hope, Arkansas, in March 2023. Still, some Tyson workers who lived through ammonia leaks said they wished more had been done to protect them. That means that the data doesn’t necessarily cover Tyson plants or other meat facilities that hold smaller amounts of ammonia.
It’s No Mow May, time for the annual campaign that advocates just what it says: Skip mowing the lawn this month, in the name of providing additional resources for early-season pollinators. One day during the first week of May is the only time all year that I actually do mow several increasingly large swaths of my property. I started growing my first little meadow about 30 years ago, and since then I have stopped cutting a few other areas, too, except for that one day a year. They’re not all desirable, admittedly, as I have made very clear repeatedly, in rude language, to the brambles encroaching on the oldest, largest area. They fight back in their own way, their thorns drawing blood.
As May 1 looms, Americans face a complicated moral choice: Whether to mow their lawns. Scores of U.S. cities and towns are embracing a British movement called No Mow May, whose supporters refrain from cutting their grass during that month. The goal is to allow more flowering plants to thrive, and provide nectar and pollen to nourish bees and other pollinators, vital parts of the food chain.

Ukraine has used a WWI-era machine gun on the front line to mow down the enemy. "It only works when there is a massive attack going on," a Ukrainian soldier told BBC News. Ukraine's troops have modified the guns with modern add-ons such as optics and suppressors, according to reporting from Task and Purpose. The fighting in Ukraine has repeatedly garnered parallels to World War I, with both sides locked in a brutal war of attrition featuring trenches, relentless artillery barrages, and heavy casualties. In this environment, even some of the weapons of that era have come in handy as Ukrainian troops face human wave attacks on the front line — tactics common to World War I.Ukraine has also apparently utilized a type of World War I-era sniper decoy, employing dummies meant to fool enemy snipers.
