How Much Money Did This Year’s Met Gala Raise?
  + stars: | 2024-05-07 | by ( Callie Holtermann | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
At the Met Gala on Monday, a throng of photographers fought to capture Zendaya and Kim Kardashian parading couture gowns down the red (technically, mouthwash-green) carpet. This year’s event raised about $26 million for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, according to a spokeswoman. That’s a $4 million increase over last year’s total, and more than double what the event raised a decade ago, in 2014. The most recent fall gala for the New York City Ballet raised just short of $4 million, and the American Museum of Natural History’s gala brought in $2.5 million. Even The Met’s other events do not compare: Its Art & Artists Gala raised $4.4 million last year.

CNN —It would be difficult to find an airline that didn’t consider a pilot flying while drunk a fireable offense. But a newly proposed regulation in India could also take action against pilots who use perfume. India’s Office of the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which oversees the country’s aviation industry, recently proposed an update to its bylaws regarding alcohol consumption. There is already reference to things other than alcoholic drinks that could cause a positive breath test, namely mouthwash, in the guidelines. It reads: “No crew member shall consume any drug/formulation or use any substance such as mouthwash/tooth gel/perfume or any such product which has alcoholic content.

NASA and other space agencies have banned alcohol in space because it can damage equipment. But astronauts have found ways around this and smuggled alcohol onto spacecrafts for decades. In the one-sixth gravity of the moon the wine curled slowly and gracefully up the side of the cup. The space agency has since banned astronauts from drinking 12 hours before they fly. Others would hide alcohol in thick books that were hollowed out by removing the pages inside.

July 28 (Reuters) - Church & Dwight (CHD.N) raised its annual sales and profit forecasts on Friday, betting on higher prices and steady demand for its household and personal care products including liquid detergents and mouthwash. However, investors have now started flagging their concerns about higher prices to consumer good companies as it can put them at a potential risk of losing customers. The consumer products firm's overall average selling prices increased 5.8%, while its volumes decreased slightly during the quarter ended June 30. Church & Dwight now expects full-year adjusted profit to increase by 6%, compared with its earlier forecast of growth of 2% to 4%. The company sees full-year reported net sales growing by 8%, compared with its previous forecast of a 6% to 7% increase.

Kenvue reported second-quarter revenue and adjusted earnings that topped expectations Thursday in the consumer health company's first quarterly report since it spun out from Johnson & Johnson two months ago. But J&J still owns a 90% stake in Kenvue, meaning it can generally control the direction of the spinoff's business for now. Excluding certain items, the company's adjusted earnings were 32 cents a share. The company's full-year adjusted earnings outlook is $1.26 to $1.31 per share. The company reported sales growth across its three business divisions in the second quarter.

Aimen Halim, who sued Buffalo Wild Wings over its boneless wings, has filed another class-action lawsuit. Now, Halim is suing a home goods company over a blanket that sells at Costco and Walmart for $20. Halim and four other plaintiffs accused Berkshire Blanket & Home Company of greenwashing. Aimen Halim gained notoriety earlier this year when he filed a class-action lawsuit against Buffalo Wild Wings, alleging the company's "boneless wings" are closer to chicken nuggets. Now, Halim and a handful of other plaintiffs have made similar claims against Berkshire Blanket & Home Company, claiming the company misrepresented a plush blanket as more sustainable than it really is.

Researchers conducted a study to find out how different human body odors can attract mosquitoes. The research used a 20-meter by 20-meter screened cage that contained hundreds of African malaria mosquitoes, according to the study. Despite the name, the mosquitoes were not infected with malaria, according to CNN, which first reported on the study. These tents are connected to the cage in a way that the human body odor can be safely fed to the mosquitoes. Researchers found that mosquitoes gravitated to human body odor with "increased relative abundances of the volatile carboxylic acids," including butyric acid.

However, battery-powered electric bikes and home security cameras similar to Amazon's Ring video doorbells will join the index, the ONS said. Inflation is high on the public's agenda, after surging energy prices pushed CPI to a 41-year high of 11.1% in October. In future it will use an industry database with 30 million price points rather than an index calculated by a regulator. Leaving the index are cooking apples and super-king-size cigarettes - though other types of apple and cigarette will remain.
Rapid tests have always been second to polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, assays when it comes to accuracy. Home-test kits have expiration datesAt-home COVID-19 test kits are one of the more convenient inventions to come out of the pandemic. Over-the-counter test kits typically have a sticker on the box indicating an expiration date and manufacturing date. One study found that false positives showed up when unexpected substances were directly applied to test kits. That is if you use the rapid test correctly and wait at least three-to-five days since a COVID-19 exposure to swab yourself.
Vaping may increase a person's risk for cavities and tooth decay, preliminary new research suggests. Adding artificial sweeteners and flavorings to the sticky aerosol may create the perfect breeding ground for cavities. The new study, published Wednesday in the Journal of the American Dental Association, is considered preliminary and does not prove that vaping causes cavities. But because e-cigarette usage is so rampant among adolescents — with 2.5 million teens vaping in the United States alone — the possibility that it could increase the risk for tooth decay in this generation is worrisome, experts who study vaping in young people said. Among these high-risk patients, e-cigarette users, Irusa found, were at a "significantly" higher risk of developing cavities, compared with those who did not vape.

How Dentists Keep Their Own Teeth HealthyThey brush, floss and rinse after every meal. Dr. Quinonez and Dr. Tapper try to keep their mouths as pristine as possible at all times. That means brushing first thing in the morning to dislodge “the bacteria that has been sitting in the mouth all night,” Dr. Quinonez said, and rinsing with mouthwash for fresh breath. Then, they brush, floss and rinse after each meal of the day, if their schedule permits.
