CNN —Flowers and brunch are lovely for Mother’s Day, but there’s an invaluable gift almost every mom would enjoy: a healthier body image. But almost all postpartum moms, celebrity or not, face an unspoken mandate to “bounce back” to their pre-baby body. If moms feel preoccupied with their appearance, exercise or what they eat (even “healthy eating”), it could be a sign of significant maternal mental health problems. “The body isn’t what it was before. Awareness of these external diet culture directives can help moms start to push back against unrealistic and harmful ideals.

Now, a new study has quantified the risk of depression during the transition, known as perimenopause — showing that women in this stage are about 40% more likely to experience the mental health condition than premenopausal women. The authors conducted the study — which is a review of seven studies totaling 9,141 women — to provide an estimate for the risk of developing clinical, diagnosed depression or depressive symptoms at different menopausal stages. The authors didn’t find a significant difference in risk of depression for postmenopausal women compared with premenopausal women. More dire long-term consequences may also be at play, according to new research on the associations between work patterns in young adulthood and health outcomes later in life. Multiple studies have shown how irregular work hours can harm overall health and social life, but the new paper views the relationship through a “life-course” approach, observing how work patterns affect health throughout adulthood instead of one point in time. Despite the challenges of today’s work schedules, health experts say there are strategies people can use to mitigate the negative impacts. Additionally, still having some kind of routine or schedule around that shift can make it easier to fit in those health-promoting activities — especially sleep, Yao added. And past research has found that refraining from eating late at night counteracts the negative effects of shift work on health, he added.

President Biden on Monday signed an executive order to expand the federal government’s research into women’s health, including midlife conditions like menopause, arthritis and heart disease, as well as issues specifically affecting women in the military. In what the White House described as the “most comprehensive” action by a president on women’s health research, Mr. Biden on Monday directed federal agencies to ensure that they are using federal funds to research health conditions and diseases that disproportionately affect women. Standing alongside the first lady, Jill Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris, Mr. Biden said improving women’s health was crucial to ensuring a healthy, stable economy. “There’s not a damn thing a man can do a woman can’t do,” Mr. Biden said. “To state the obvious, if you want to have the strongest economy in the world, you can’t leave half of the country behind.”

(CNN) — Menopause and weight gain seem to go hand in hand. But is menopause really to blame for women’s midlife weight gain? Christmas said it’s impossible to talk about weight gain around menopause without talking about the other elephant in the room: aging. Many women gain weight around menopause. And there’s at least one more factor that contributes to weight gain as we age.

Five Black Romantic Movies to Stream

Much like Blackness is not monolithic, neither is Black love. The relationships in this collection range from young passions to midlife romance, and the types of movies range from glossy studio pictures to vital queer indies. That prospect would be easier if Harper, a writer, didn’t base his new book off his friends’ lives. Composed of a deep ensemble — Terrence Howard, Sanaa Lathan and Regina Hall included — the film follows multiple relationships as these adult friends confront their romantic futures through biting humor and unflinching honesty. And thankfully, it kicked off a charming romantic film and TV franchise.

With higher emotional intelligence, you're also better equipped to grasp and empathize with the emotions of others, fostering deeper, more fulfilling relationships. Here's how my emotional intelligence has grown since I've gotten older:1. I feel more compassion for othersAs I age, I've softened ... and not just around my belly. I'm able to positively reappraise negative experiences, like getting stuck in traffic in an Uber (interpretation: great chance to meditate).

The findings highlight “potential cognitive vulnerabilities in women with PCOS, though it’s important to know that these are cognitive weaknesses, not impairments,” Maki said. The midlife crisis is easy to poke fun at — especially if it’s someone else’s. In real life, though, a midlife crisis is rarely so obvious or dramatic, or the sole province of men. Of course, there’s no harm in the occasional treat, especially when you budget for the expense. The trouble is, a midlife crisis can hit just as retirement is becoming more real. So if you’re going to treat yourself, you should also make sure your retirement savings and investments are on track, experts say.

At the White House, Jill Biden is leading a new initiative to boost federal government research into women's health. Most menopause care startups, including Midi, sell into enterprises to offer the service as a benefit to employees. US companies lose about $1.8 billion each year from workdays missed due to menopause symptoms, according to a Mayo Clinic estimate. While venture funding to women's health startups fell in 2023, according to CB Insights, startups tackling menopause symptoms surged ahead of the pack. Data shows these startups raised $230 million last year, making up a third of all funding to women's health startups.

Future studies could also help explore who could benefit since the demographics in this study were limited to women of a specific age group and profession. The results also suggest it's a good idea to start eating enough protein in your younger years before health issues arise.

Women going through menopause raise concerns about weight and body changes almost as often as they do about hot flashes and night sweats, said Dr. Stephanie Faubion, medical director for the Menopause Society and a director of the Mayo Clinic’s Center for Women’s Health. Some estimates suggest that roughly 70 percent of women gain up to 1.5 pounds per year during the menopause transition, which can last as long as a decade. This weight gain can affect women’s self-esteem and quality of life and can also increase the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other health issues. Excess weight is also correlated with more hot flashes and night sweats; the Menopause Society recommends weight loss as an effective nonhormonal treatment for those symptoms. Now, some women going through menopause are seeking drugs like Ozempic, despite the steep costs: Without insurance coverage, the drugs can run around $1,000 a month.
