‘War Against the Children’

A new accounting shows that at least 523 institutions were part of the sprawling network of boarding schools for Native American children. ‘War Against the Children’ The Native American boarding school system — a decades-long effort to assimilate Indigenous people before they ever reached adulthood — robbed children of their culture, family bonds and sometimes their lives. “The government was not done with war, so the next phase involved war against the children,” said Mr. Sherman, 83, a former aerospace engineer. Now 76, his voice grows shaky when he recounts the punishments children received — and how children were turned into punishers. Library of Congress, Chronicling AmericaA precise accounting of how many children died at Native American boarding schools remains elusive.

NOTHING SPECIAL, by Nicole FlatteryIn the Irish writer Nicole Flattery’s exquisitely disorienting debut novel, “Nothing Special,” Mae, the daughter of an alcoholic waitress, spends her youth in 1960s New York City riding up and down department store escalators, getting nowhere except deeper into her own dissatisfaction. What she does do is observe, and the one thing that is clear is the rapacity of her speculation. She subjects her world and the people who populate it to a ravenous metamorphosing, a proxy for the closeness she craves and fears. As she listens, she grows closer to the disembodied voices, and to the revealing silences in between, than to anyone else around her. “It felt like my life had been reduced to nothing but the tapes, that I no longer recognized the sound of my own voice,” Mae narrates.

‘Nimona’ Review: Fright the Power
  + stars: | 2023-06-29 | by ( Amy Nicholson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Ballister yearns to be once again embraced by the kingdom, and his ex, the lustily named Ambrosius Goldenloin (Eugene Lee Yang), who broke Ballister’s heart and sliced off his arm. Enter Nimona, a bloodthirsty wrecking ball who wants to use Ballister to destroy the entire system. To do so, Nimona brings further shame upon the exile, even publicly claiming that Ballister likes — Egads! But jokes litter the film like scattered Legos, making you hesitate long enough to appreciate how the light glints off Ballister’s armor-plated shoulders. This is a big message film that wants audiences to reflect on social paranoia.

[1/4] Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and Central Bank Governor Sahap Kavcioglu are pictured during a signing ceremony in Ankara, Turkey, June 8, 2022. But his drastic transformation of the economy and financial markets means such a change would bring its own uncertainties. The election will also determine what role regional military power and NATO member Turkey plays in conflicts in Ukraine, where Erdogan has helped broker talks, and in neighbour Syria. In the short-term it seems to have worked however, halting a years-long rise in Turks converting lira into dollars. Last week, Turkey had no problem borrowing $2.75 billion from international capital markets.
