Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games: What can we expect?
  + stars: | 2024-08-12 | by ( Issy Ronald | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
CNN —The Paris Games are over, the Olympic flame that hung suspended in a cauldron above the Jardins de Tuileries extinguished, and the Olympic flag handed over to Los Angeles for the 2028 Games. Now only a mere 1,432 days away, the LA Olympics begins on July 14, 2028 with its opening ceremony and will run until July 30. So, what can we expect from the Los Angeles Olympic Games in four years’ time? Los Angeles has already hosted two Olympics, in 1932 and 1984, leaving enough infrastructure in place that there won’t be any new permanent venues built for 2028, and athletes will be housed at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), instead of a purpose-built Olympic Village. Although it isn’t yet clear exactly where each and every sport will take place in Los Angeles, organizers have already announced some of their biggest venues.

After all, I knew perfectly well what I'd signed up for: learning Portuguese from the biggest asshole on the App Store. It might be an overstatement to call tough love the secret sauce for engaging Gen Z customers. It followed that in 2023 with a send-up of personal-injury-attorney TV ads: "Lawyer Fights Duolingo Owl for $2,700,000." Despite the research, Duolingo insists its guilt-tripping notifications do the trick of enticing people to drop whatever they're doing to log on to the app. When Duolingo's head of product, Cem Kansu, posted a thread in 2020 about the success of "the passive aggressive reminder," several unhappy Duolingo users chimed in.

Read previewMemes and celebrity endorsements have already set the tone for Kamala Harris' presidential campaign. Kamala HQ instead posted a Venn diagram, with the two outer circles, "Biden HQ" and "Kamala HQ" merging to form "holding Trump accountable." Across the social media landscape, the energy is palpable, said David Karpf, a professor of media and public affairs at George Washington University. "When you've got a good social media team that has arrived at a cultural moment and pent-up enthusiasm, they get to play with it." While Harris' team is focusing on younger voters and voters of color, the appeal of social media transcends age, North said.

Its most recent dual-branded restaurant opening was in Leon, Mexico, and the company is contemplating opening more in the US, CEO John Peyton said. The 2002 annual report for Yum Brands, the parent company of Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, and KFC, among other restaurant chains, lays out why the much-memed combination Taco Bell-Pizza Hut existed in the first place. In the past, some restaurant brands have put together brands that don't complement each other, said Rob Seely, associate vice president of operations, strategy, and design at WD Partners, which advises restaurant brands. CNN —The disastrous Willy Wonka-inspired experience held in Glasgow, Scotland, last month has already been immortalized in an endless stream of meme-orabilia that will forever live on a corner of the internet. “He has a workshop underneath the venue that hosted the Willy Wonka experience and… the day after everything blew up, he was just at the bins and saw all this stuff lying there,” Kasparis told CNN Wednesday. Despite having a starting price of £10 ($13), the three backdrops have already fetched 48 bids on Ebay, including a highest one of £760 ($973) as of Wednesday morning. “I’m anticipating getting into four figures,” Kasparis said, “which is what I’m hoping for.”As of Wednesday morning, the backdrops had received 48 bids. Frustrated with that gap between the advertising and reality, families attending the experience became so angry that the police were called, and the event was eventually canceled.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Bryce Harper has manhandled postseason pressure with the ease of one of his swings -- bat tucked behind his helmet, short ground step, then, whack! Inside the jubilant clubhouse, the Phillies had their fun, spraying Harper with beer and gleefully yelling, “Attaboy, Harper! Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky called out his own company in an interview with Bloomberg published Monday. AdvertisementAdvertisementAirbnb CEO Brian Chesky says it's time for the company to "get our house in order," in an interview with Bloomberg, and short-term rental hosts are thrilled. Airbnb host Ric Kenworthy, who manages over 90 properties in Arizona, says Chesky's comments were a long time coming. Chesky's site is a marketplace that connects hosts and travelers, and the CEO is struggling to keep both sides happy. As travelers continue to book short-term rentals, Chesky acknowledged the company "never fully built the foundation" needed for the current size of the company.

These concepts aren’t about goofing off all day or shirking responsibility; they’re about creating reasonable boundaries based on actual job descriptions. This shouldn’t be framed as a moral failing. Executives should take note: Laying down acceptable boundaries between the home and work lives of your employees doesn’t mean less profit. Not everyone should be a raging ambition monster — it is not sustainable for a varied and functional workplace. If, as a manager, you’re constantly requiring people to work overtime or out of the scope of their job description, it’s a sure sign that your company is not well structured.

Baby boomers are better at spotting fake news than Gen Zers and millennials, a survey found. The survey found those who spent more time online were also more likely to fall for fake news. Boomers have always taken the flack for falling for fake news stories, but a survey has found it's younger generations that are more susceptible to online misinformation. It examined how likely people were to be fooled by fake headlines. Although stereotypes about the older generation falling victim to fake news may be dated, they are rooted in fact.

The track list — featuring song titles like “I Hate Love,” “My Mistake” and “Red Flag Collector” — practically screamed divorce, babe, divorce. But Clarkson, 41, said she wanted “Chemistry” to depict a full arc of a relationship, including its high points. (A remix by David Guetta kicks the song into an even higher gear.) The slower, sultry “Magic” addresses a more long-term devotion: “Magic takes time, and I’ve got my sights and they’re set on you,” she sings breathily. Clarkson delivers these vocals with her signature virtuosity, but she doesn’t quite inhabit these relatively faceless songs as fully as she does when she’s singing about love gone wrong.

Apple’s new challenge: making VR headsets look cool
  + stars: | 2023-06-10 | by ( Jennifer Korn | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
But behind this speculation is a more serious potential problem: even Apple may struggle to make VR headsets look cool. The new headset, which blends both virtual reality and augmented reality, is Apple’s most ambitious – and riskiest – new hardware product in years. In one early marketing image, a woman is shown wearing the headset while dressed in very chic clothing and lounging in an upscale living room. Apple’s silhouette ads in the early 2000s somehow managed to make not just iPods look cool, but also wired headphones. People use phones as Apple's Vision Pro headsets are on display at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference at the company's headquarters in Cupertino, California, U.S. June 5, 2023.

Taylor Swift’s ‘Midnights’ (Lindsay’s Version)
  + stars: | 2023-05-30 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Dear listeners,This past weekend, along with more than 200,000 people in the New York metropolitan area, I attended Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. I saw sights I will never forget: more than one person, in late May, dressed head to toe as a Christmas tree (an inside joke about Swift growing up on a Christmas tree farm … I think? ); a father proudly wearing a handmade shirt that read “Real Men Listen to Taylor Swift”; enough sequins per square inch that, when the sun hit it right, MetLife Stadium could probably be seen from space. But, of course, I also saw a generation-defining pop superstar performing at the top of her game, throughout a sprawling, near-three-and-a-half-hour set that highlighted her stylistic versatility, physical stamina and ongoing evolution as a songwriter. Though Swift has long had a flair for both spectacle and intimacy in a live setting, what I couldn’t shake (shake, shake) during this marathon 45-song set was how completely she’s come into her power as a performer.

Ariana DeBose, whose exuberant embrace of song and dance enlivened last year’s Tony Awards, will return to host the annual ceremony this spring. Earlier this year, she sang the opening number at the BAFTA Awards, and a rapped section paying tribute to female movie stars was mocked and memed for a hot second. DeBose, who is 32, seems to have taken it in stride — in London earlier this month, she turned the kerfuffle into merch that raised money for charity, and last weekend she performed at Lincoln Center. This year’s awards ceremony will for the first time take place at the United Palace, a large theater in Washington Heights, in Upper Manhattan. The ceremony, which is presented by the Broadway League and the American Theater Wing, honors plays and musicals staged on Broadway; it is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, June 11, and to be broadcast on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.

CNN —Nickelback’s dream to be “big rockstars” might just be coming true with the band’s induction to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. The much-memed Canadian band will be officially added to the Hall of Fame in March 2023, according to a news release. The band follows singer-songwriter Deborah Cox, who was inducted in 2022, and Jann Arden, inducted in 2021. Many of their most iconic songs – like “Rockstar” and “Photograph” – come from their fifth studio album, “All the Right Reasons,” released in 2005. The Canadian Music Hall of Fame, launched in 1978 to recognize the success of Canadian artists, is located in Calgary, Alberta.
Twitter's new verification system is already being abused by trolls impersonating public figures. Neither Bush nor Blair have personal Twitter accounts, but are verified through their foundations. Other examples of fake but verified accounts causing trouble soon after the new verification system came in included a user pretending to be O.J. "I'm ngl I did that shit," the verified account "ThaReal0J32" tweeted, attracting over 55,000 likes before it was deleted. The fake Bush account also responded to tweets about fake verified accounts saying: "Jed [Bush's younger brother] is smarter than Elon."
A fake press release announcing Trump's return to Twitter began circulating online Thursday night. The fake statement also duped Russian state media and a left-leaning MSNBC show. The fake statement appeared shortly after Elon Musk sealed his $44 billion deal to buy Twitter. TASS, the Russian state-controlled news agency, reported the claim in the fake statement that Trump's blocked Twitter account would be unlocked Monday. Robby Starbuck, another right-wing commentator, said he'd been duped after a news site posted the fake statement.
Spirit Halloween, the iconic costume and prop store, has inspired a slew of memes related to their costumes. Twitter users are now parodying knock-off costumes by adding various pop culture icons to Spirit Halloween packaging and slapping on an absurd (yet usually accurate) name. And the "Our Flag Means Death" version of the ruthless Captain Blackbeard was reduced to "Leather Clad Middle Aged Sad Sack." Spirit Halloween has not yet publicly addressed its widely memed costumes. In a response to a request for comment, a spokesperson for the store said, "Stay tuned to our Twitter and Instagram accounts this evening."
