When I was 16, my grandma started to forget things like turning off the stove and mistaking sugar for salt. Memory loss is one of the earliest symptoms of dementia and is often noticed first by other people besides the affected individual. My mom would visit my grandma daily while my sister and I accompanied her on weekends. It struck me that, although she couldn't remember my name, she never forgot about the value of getting an education. Despite everything, some memories remain intactThe weekend before my 17th birthday, my grandma was receiving palliative care at a hospital for pneumonia.

AdvertisementIt's also important, Woodrow said, to have the right words and phrases up high where a busy recruiter can see them. In any case, he said, it's important to keep the most relevant information on the first page of a résumé. Highlight things like relevant job experience for a role you're going for, he said. "We're not expecting to see the exact same formatting or skills or experience, and so we really pore through the résumé," Samuels said. That's why, especially when recruiting for more senior roles, there's little substitute for reading a résumé thoroughly, he said.

I knew I had to quitMy coworker's behavior was making me miserable. AdvertisementI also realized that in my personal life, I'm creative, a little messy, and wear my heart on my sleeve. I don't know what happened in my coworker's life to cause her intense dislike for me. While compassion is not a reason to tolerate bad behavior, I also learned to set clear boundaries for how people treat me. I learned all this by simply stepping back from my job, taking a break, and immersing myself in an entirely new field.

Federal graduate school loans are more expensive, too, with higher interest rates than loans for undergraduate studies. On top of that, 55% of master's degree-holders have debt from both their undergraduate and graduate studies, owing an average total of over $69,000. Similar to undergraduate degrees, science, technology, engineering and math-related master's degrees tend to lead to higher-paying salaries compared with degrees in the arts and humanities. That said, these are the 10 master's degrees with the highest average starting salaries for the class of 2022, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers. In fact, fewer than 60% of master's degree programs deliver a positive return on investment, according to a recent study by The Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity.

The thought of no longer existing is too painful and grim for many to bear and is frequently avoided, but one psychology expert thinks people need to face their fear of death head-on to live more fulfilling lives. "Most people like to count their money and I like to say how about we also count our Mondays?" This serves as a reminder of the scarcity of time, pushing people to take action in their lives. When you remember how many days you have left, you're more likely to book that tennis lesson. "If you were going to die tonight what would you wish you had taken action on?

Before co-founding Netflix, Reed Hastings thought another of his business ideas would become a household name. Specifically, it was a "foot mouse" — where users could control a computer cursor with their feet, Hastings said at a recent Stanford Graduate School of Business event. "It was a terrible idea, but I was equally committed to that terrible idea as I was to Netflix," he said. In the case of the foot mouse, Hastings was a Stanford graduate student at the time, working toward his master's in computer science. He even hired a mechanical engineering graduate student to mockup a prototype.

You don't need to hate your job to experience burnout. For her new book, "Burnout Immunity," Wiens interviewed hundreds of people working in high-stress environments, including hospital employees, police chiefs and financial executives. She found that the people at the highest risk of burnout aren't just those with demanding jobs — they genuinely love their work and routinely go the extra mile. While identifying yourself through your work isn't necessarily bad, it makes you vulnerable to burnout if you make too many personal sacrifices and lose sight of your own self-care. Much of the same vulnerability to burnout exists in people who are passionate about their work and prioritize their employer's needs and goals over their own, Wiens notes.

Research dating back decades has found that emotional intelligence is the greatest predictor of success in the workplace. Having a high EQ can also help you manage stress and curb burnout, according to Kandi Wiens, director of the University of Pennsylvania's Master's in Medical Education program. For her new book, "Burnout Immunity," Wiens interviewed hundreds of people thriving in high-stress environments, including hospital employees and police chiefs who remained motivated and optimistic while working as first responders at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Wien suggests paying close attention to how you cope with stress to gauge your emotional intelligence at work. As Wiens explains in "Burnout Immunity," cultivating healthier responses to stress can prevent burnout, which stems from chronic, unmanaged stress.
